After hearing/watching Rush perform YYZ, Working Man and now Natural Science live it’s become pretty clear Rush is without question one of the greatest live Rock bands of all time if not they best. They have one of the most unique, energetic, melodic, joyful, technical sounds we’ve ever heard. The thing I’ve started noticing within these past 3 songs is they have an incredible ability to wander off into these sections were they’re just jamming out in an improve like fashion filled with these proggy, Jazz fusion, groovy, energetic melodic sections were every member - Geddy Lee, Neil Peart & Alex Lifeson take turns crushing their instruments in a truly stunning fashion. And We are also starting to realize why Neil Peart is held in such high regard as one of the GOATS behind the kit if not they GOAT in rock drumming history. His style is not just obviously technical and precise but they instantly get you moving and head bobbing. They’re so catchy and groovy just instant goosebumps. Someone mention Neil is one Danny Careys “Tool” biggest influences and after hearing Neil behind the kit on these past three songs it’s pretty clear. This has been an unbelievable trio of a ride and can’t wait to continue this journey as we are on our way to becoming full blown Rush Heads. GAME OVER
As a fan since 1980 it's always been more of a word of mouth band that built a huge cult following. They added the heavy into Prog rock of the day in the 70s. Welcome to the family. Two live ones I recommend is Anthem from a rough 1976 film in black and white that shows their youthful fire. And if the road gets to it Jacobs Ladder on R40 their final tour a song they hadn't played in 35 years on their final tour. They make great book ends on early and the end of their tours. Great weekend to the both of you. Always great reactions and your feel of music is top notch
FREEWILL from Exit Stage Left is greatness. The lead break is the most wonderful 60 seconds of full out controlled kaos jam your ears could ever be lucky enough to hear. All 3 doing their own thing in unison and then Geddy taking it home with the vocals sure bliss! You should treat yourself to that.. Peace out...
I wish people just finding Rush now could have experienced them live. The videos are great but there was nothing like being at one of their shows and being a part of it with the crowd...
I thought that when I was a teenage drummer in the 70's, went to see them UFO, Max Webster. $7. Went up front to learn what Neil was doing. My mission learn from every drummer I liked, go to the shows.
I forget what tour it was, but I went to the Tweeter Center in Camden early in the afternoon to buy a single ticket for Rush that evening. Waited a few hours for the box office to open. Paid the lady for my ticket and got my ticket. It felt kinda thick, and it was two tickets stuck together. I IMMEDIATELY said "Umm, ma'am, you gave two tickets by mistake. I only paid for one." I put the extra ticket under the ticket window without even thinking that I could have sold it. She said "Oh! Thank you very much!" During the show, they played Natural Science. I always thought that I would never see Rush perform that phenominal song live. What a huge surprise that was. When the 3rd verse came around, I was blown away, remembering what happened at the ticket window. "I will survive annihilation." I took that as a promise from God through Geddys lips, even though Geddy is an atheist. Amazing grace.
I am a 55 year old drummer who fell in love with Rush back in 1980 when I was going on 13 and Permanent Waves came out, the album that this song appears on. My first concert was 3 years later on the Signals tour and my life changed forever.
Crazy Dude....same here Signals...Irvine Meadows Amphitheater Southern Ca.. I still have a DW Collarlock Kit from the 90's My Bday 6/7/67 Rock on Dude 😎
I'm 58, and have not missed a tour since my first, Permanent Waves. I'm one of those guys that is an introverted nerd, and Rush was was speaking directly to me. That's pretty much the demo of a Rush fan.
Yeah they're deserving of all the hype. Was lucky enough to see them live a couple times. Incredibly tight! And of course Neil is just a legend of the music world...what a humble, quiet, genius of a human. Greatly missed!🙌
The best band to ever take the stage. I have been a devoted fan since I was 15. I am now 64 & after having seen them 62 times over my lifetime, they still give me goosebumps. Their shows were unbelievable and they always gave us fans 150%. RUSH FOREVER!! 🤘❤️🤘❤️
Rush is pure talent. In my top 3 favorite bands of all time across all genres my nearly 50 year old ears have ever heard (and I heard a lot). :) Have all their studio albums been a fan since the 80's.
I’ve seen them like 10 times All I can say it’s they played every time I saw them like it was the last concert of their lives ( and I did see the last one)
Great reaction!! I recommend live “Freewill” (any of them), “Xanadu - Exit Stage Left” and “Headlong Flight” studio version! Keep the RUSH coming!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!
I think Different Stages which this is off of is the better live release. For one it has 2112 in its entirety plus I fuckin love how they go off at the end of Closer To the Heart and they go off on that instrumental.....EPIC.......EPIC........EPIC!!! then of course Peart's drum solo never sounded so crisp and clear to which he was known for already! But on Different Stages which is the Test For Echo tour 96/97 you can hear his growth from when he went to Freddie Gruber that jazz drummer who taught him that swinging/circular motion style which really made it fun to watch him sticking those awesome stick patterns that only he could play
Congratulations, you are now RUSH ARMY. I have that power. The recruiting process usually doesn’t take very long. RUSH is special. No dummies in a RUSH crowd. 😁👍 🇺🇸🇨🇦
Yeah, Alex has a very unique guitar setup in that he has two outputs on the body of the guitar so he can run the piezo pickups through a different signal chain on his soundboard from the primary pickups. He even sometimes plays with both the piezo and primary pickups active so it sounds like he has acoustic accompaniment.
This is where Neil switched to DW which as a drummer I don’t like. I just don’t like the tone of their shells. I do love their snares though not so much this one though.
You two do very nice reactions. It's great to see people 20 years + younger than me enjoying Rush so much. They truly are unique. Thanks for a great vid x
I was at this show, and let me tell you, the sound was incredible (it's actually an outdoor amphitheatre in Toronto, but the acoustics are amazing). This performance was my first time hearing this song - talk about instant fan! Can never go wrong with these 3 guys!
Rush is a great live band. I saw them 27 times live between 1984 and 2015. Their music evolved over time but their musicianship was always there, front and center. They did an amazing tour in 2011 - Time Machine, Live in Cleveland. Your Working Man reaction was from that show (Working Man was the last song of the encore, they had been playing for almost 3 hours straight at that point and they were in their late '50's, if you needed to add anything to that performance). It was the 30th Anniversary of their biggest selling album, Moving Pictures so the middle of the show was that entire album, in order! It was epic. Other notables from that show are Freewill, Marathon and something that hadn't been released on an album at the point of that tour, Caravan. Please put all 3 on your list. I would add Analog Kid (from Dallas? in 2013 or 2015?) and if you want to hear something ridiculous go back in time to 1976 and listen to By-Tor and the Snowdog from All The World's a Stage when they were in their early 20's.
After decades still one of my fave Rush songs, so perfectly RUSH! Always contemplate this track when I go outdoors and am able to let go and meditate on planet Earth, humanity, the universe; we are here for a very fleeting time, we should try and pay attention to as many moments as possible. "Wheels within wheels in a spiral array, a pattern so grand and complex, time after time we lose sight of the way, our causes can't see their effects"
All the members of Rush started playing instruments at the age of 13. Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson met when they were 13 in junior high school and started playing together at around 16 when Alex formed the band with John Rutsy who was the drummer at that time. When they got their first record deal in 1974 they were going to start touring. John Rutsy has health issues and couldn't tour. Neil was asked to audition and the rest as they say is history. Three life long friends who were brilliant musicians. yeah, always love the way Ged and Lerxt are clearly haivng as much fun as the crowd. Their pre-show vids and stage props just show a band who are having fun whilst being totaly amazing which adds to their fans experience. Much as I love most of their contemporaries I think they always played it a bit too seriously but ironically these guys were the best of them all.
John actually was the drummer for their first album, the eponymous _Rush._ He wanted them to be more glam, while Alex and Geddy were more into Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd. Then "Working Man" hit big in the US, they were faced with longer tours, and between his diabetes (which used to be harder to manage back then) and incipient alcoholism, John didn't think he could handle it, so he left. Reportedly he stayed friends with the guys after that, though.
RUSH! Welcome to the club. Heard Tom Sawyer on the radio as a 12 year old in 1980 and that was it. Saw them live over 30 times and cherish every moment.
Seen Rush 47 times from All the Worlds a Stage to R40 never have I ever experienced the captivation that Rush has on me. Imo the greatest band ever. In The End live version All the Worlds a Stage check it out please ty great reaction
Great reaction! Rush crushed every performance. 3 GOATS on stage at one time pulling off incredible time signatures all the while keeping it musical and relatable. Neil and Geddy have a lot of (well deserved) notoriety, but Alex is sometimes overlooked and underrated despite his mastery level of playing. The live version is great, but the studio version is a masterpiece.
Musically speaking, Natural Science is in the top 5 of Rush songs (and is the one I have been listening again and again since Permanent Waves was released). Great choice!
fire. an astounding performance of one of their most astonishing pieces (and they have dozens that stand alongside it). quick heads up dude - the ear in his surname is pronounced the same as you would pronounce the thing on the side of your head with which you have been listening to this song (with the emphasis on the vowels and not the r: ''p-ear-t''.) RIP prof x
"Wave after wave, will flow with the tides, and bury the world as it does, tide after tide, will flow and recede, leaving life to go on as it was" Peart was without peer in the lyrics department
I was in high school when this came out! I was a full blown RUSH maniac back in 1980! Bought this album the first week of release and saw the original tour too, of course. Permanent Waves is a great album. All their albums are. They are one of those bands.
The truth is, none of that was improvised. If you listen to the original album they are playing pretty close to the original except for an occasional funny start, like Working Man as a polka. Every song was written to be played live just as it was recorded. Geddy Lee sang lead while playing bass, keyboard along with key peddles and bass peddles depending on which instrument he was playing with his hands and on several songs he added his double-neckand bass/6-string where he plays rhythm guitar. Alex played lead guitar, 12 string and other stringed instruments, foot peddles, back up vocals and occasional keyboards. Neil played multiple drum kits all around him along with a full percussion kit.
You have to watch the intro they play in the “live in Rio” and “YYZ live in Rio” or maybe you already did I’m gonna checkout your channel. It’s just crazy how that young South American crowd found out about Rush is through the internet. Goes to show how this Toronto band has rocked the soul of millions of fan with their lyrics and the way they handle their instruments. They will be missed I know I do ever since they retired and drummer Neil’s death. Btw he wrote most of their songs, very deep lyrics the dude did not have it easy with the tragic death of his wife and child, may his soul rest in peace. He contributed to goodness and served a purpose for the human race.
I saw Rush live for the first time in 1996 -- on this same tour! -- and had the great fortune of seeing them quite a few times more from then through 2015. But I'll never forget the first one!
Every performance was legendary. You will hear a lot of calls for Xanadu and La Villa, but if you want something more off the beaten path, try Secret Touch from this same tour or The Weapon from the Grace Under Pressure tour. Rush on!
One of the last performances of Rush 1.0 (as Geddy Lee would call it). This is during the TFE tour, before the tragedies that befell Neil Peart. At this point in time, he had done a substantial amount of work w/ Freddie Gruber, regarding economy of movement, etc. For me, this was the very height of his abilities. When Rush returned in 2002, Peart had to virtually re-learn the drums. He was clearly a different drummer from what he was in Rush 1.0. He was still every bit as agile, but a bit more heavy handed. I think this video captures some of that last Rush 1.0 magic.
Thanks for reacting to this video here are my suggestions for additional live rush tracks Xanadu 1981 Exit Stage Left Working Man Live in Cleveland YYZ - Live in Rio Leave That Thing Alone - Time Machine Tour 2011
There is only one other group I've ever heard that could pull of incredible time changes at the speed and consistently as RUSH...THE MIGHTY OPETH as you put it. Wait until Xanadu. Greatest drummer with the most air drummers in one spot, that's a good reason why he was the greatest. RIP the mighty Neil Peart!!
“Subdivisions” video clip is one of their greatest hits, the whole intro with the synthesizer is dope and Neil’s drum bit at end is insane. “Xanadu” another great song the intro too long but when it gets going, you simply become hypnotized by the whole video that is mind boggling knowing that they’re only three dudes playing that song, amazing
You all are great with your reviews !! You need to see their early live version of La Villa Strangiato and the Exit Stage Left Live version of Xanadu !! EPIC stuff of theirs that cannot be missed!! And also a personal favorite of mine ... Exit Stage Left Live version of Bytor and Snowdog!!
Great reaction! This is my personal favorite. You guysdidnt even get into the lyrics, but these can definitely make you mind explode. Its a journey through the life of man and through the earth. Its incredibly deep. Any live performance will not disappoint because they brought the "A" game every night. Rush was very much a touring band and how they breath for fan base. Toured 10 months out of the year for a straight 20 years. Took 5 or 6 years off (Neil lost his daughter tragically, and then lost his wife within the year to cancer) and continued to tour every year and a half of so until 2015. Neil retired after the 2015 tour and sadly passed away in 2020 to a rare brain cancer. 😞 Again anything live will probably be more than you would expect.. But I'd recommend Xanadu from Exit Stage Left, One Little Victory from Rio, and Headlong Flight from R40. R40 is from their 40th anniversary tour. So their final tour. They were still in their prime.
A definite band to acknowledge for their uniqueness. I am a Jethro Tull freak (and recommend you review the catalog from the beginning(1968-1987)However they are My favorite band replacing Yes and Genesis as second best of the progressive bands of all time Keep on exploring the bands of the 70’s
First time I heard Natural Science live was at Fiddlers Green in Denver, i can't recall the tour, but as great a track as the studio version is, there was just something extra special about the live version... great reaction and love seeing others "first times" and the appreciation for these guys.
They are truly masters of their craft....check out some of their work from their final recordings. May I suggest Malignant Narcissism (live Snakes and Arrows) for a great jam session and The Garden (live version of course). Thanks for a great review!!!
A Show of Hands is so powerful, both CD and DVD. The Analog Kid from Different Stages is another good display of their skill, and Jacob's Ladder from Exit Stage Left
This song has my favorite Rush (Peart) lyric of all time. The most endangered species, the honest man Will still survive annihilation Forming a world State of integrity Sensitive, open, and strong
The kid from St. Catharines was a nice addition to the band when Rutsey left. Of course, he had to drop his agricultural implement parts counter gig with his dad but things seemed to work out OK. The clouds parted over that rehearsal studio in Ajax when Neil walked in and met Ged and Alex for the first time. God looked down and said that it was good.
They were influenced by rush, 100% the best definition of rush I've heard, they have always served their own idea of the songs they played, the record companies tried to steer them in a commercial direction, rush said absolutely not, we play the music we want to play and if people like it great, if not, then they will exit stage left on our terms. Then 2112 was released and they thought it would flop, in fact it was the exact opposite, and that album secured their status as a rock band that knew who they were and what they wanted to play, the record companies left them alone after that. Great reaction guys, keep listening to rush. 👍
Another beautiful song by Rush. 'We are Planets to Each Other" Snakes & Arrows, a great tour. "Far Cry" "Anthem" Live 1976 from the "Fly by Night" the first album Neil wrote. ❤🔥
I saw them over 20 times and loved every show, and every style change they evolved through. And they sounded best when they were doing it in the late 80s.
"La Villa Strangiato", "Heresy", "Manhattan Project", "Mission", "The Pass", "Bravado", "Time Stand Still", "Jacob's Ladder". I could go on and on, and I'm sure others will have other suggestions, but these are a few of my (many) favorites from this incredible band!
Great video guys & so glad you appreciate the art of Rush. They were really influenced by Yes, The Who & Cream. The greatest prog rock band ever!! Cheers to you and great reaction!!
I'm glad you spotted the "jam" aspect of Rush live. All 3 members gradually add more and more to the original studio parts every time they tour a song. Especially Geddy whose bass style has evolved over the years. Also Neil will add new fills, Alex new guitar tones that build and build, and - wait, there's only 3 of them?! 😜
You should react to Rush performing "Spirit of Radio" live in Toronto in 2003 in front of 500,000 fans on a sunny August afternoon! They start out with a short instrumental of "Paint It Black" in tribute to the Rolling Stones and the segue into a mind-blowing version of "Spirit of Radio". The performance has over 10 million views on youtube. It's amazing!

Beethoven, Bach and Brahms walk into a bar… no wait… it’s RUSH
Nice, I like it
Nailed it !
True as hell!!
Xanadu. From exit stage left 1981.
My Favorite Live song from them!!!!
Alex's tone is perfect, and his solo in this song is beyond mind blowing.
I am a 55 year old drummer who fell in love with Rush back in 1980 when I was going on 13 and Permanent Waves came out, the album that this song appears on. My first concert was 3 years later on the Signals tour and my life changed forever.

The best band to ever take the stage.
I have been a devoted fan since I was 15. I am now 64 & after having seen them 62 times over my lifetime, they still give me goosebumps.

As Gene Simmons said "What kind of a band is Rush? They're Rush."
Rush is pure talent. In my top 3 favorite bands of all time across all genres my nearly 50 year old ears have ever heard (and I heard a lot). :) Have all their studio albums been a fan since the 80's.
Greatest band ever, PERIOD!
This is a song that you REALLY need to study the lyrics! Neil is, and will always be, a poetic genius!
I’ve seen them like 10 times
All I can say it’s they played every time I saw them like it was the last concert of their lives
( and I did see the last one)
Great reaction!! I recommend live “Freewill” (any of them), “Xanadu - Exit Stage Left” and “Headlong Flight” studio version! Keep the RUSH coming!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!
Agree with all - except I like Freewill from Time Machine the best!
@@lewisbernstein4272 yeah, that’s a great version!! Take care, my friend!!
Yes! The guitar sounds wonderful, almost like an acoustic. Re Alex's haircut... he chose freewill.

Best. Ever.
I was there and yes It was mind blowing. Truly blessed to have witnessed that.
Intro guitar tone is a piezo “acoustic” pickup integrated into a PRS CE24.
Btw, what a weird poppy snare tone… I love Neil’s classic dry snare tone.

Rush is your favourite band's favourite band.
You know you’re good when you can rock the Prince Valiant haircut with zero regrets. Love live, King Rush!
Love your humor, Alex with his great sense of humor is standing there thinking to himself "wrong barber - I hope they don't notice".
Great to see more people being turned on to Rush. Also happy to see you guys doing some Ghost too. My two favorite bands
Losing It - Madison Square Garden. Great live video
In theory your correct. In practice Rush rarely played the studio version live note for note. Geddy was constantly changing the bass parts.
I will always think of and miss the three of them professors
Bravado live in Dallas.
Marathon Live
Mission live (Snakes and Arrows tour)
You really can't go wrong with any live Rush song :)
Digital man
I love newbies
They just don’t know …
Super clean, Super Accurate live.
Every time so tight, zero mistakes in concert. I know, I saw them 18 times over the years! Stories for days…..
Thank you. One of my favorite if not most favorite Rush song ever!
lol the haircut... laughed out loud😆
This is my fave song by Rush👍
Every performance was legendary. You will hear a lot of calls for Xanadu and La Villa, but if you want something more off the beaten path, try Secret Touch from this same tour or The Weapon from the Grace Under Pressure tour. Rush on!
Seen rush 20+ times
They literally never missed a beat.
Absolutely outstanding musicians
"An Army of three."
This was off the 1980 album Permanent Waves. Excellent album
Nice you noticed the dynamics of the guitar at the beginning!
FYI: the beginning of this song was usually a chance for Neil to grab a smoke.
Next up? Fee will live from the Time Machine tour! You won’t be disappointed!
Thanks for reacting to this video
here are my suggestions for additional live rush tracks
Xanadu 1981 Exit Stage Left
Working Man Live in Cleveland
YYZ - Live in Rio
Leave That Thing Alone - Time Machine Tour 2011
This song and Losing it are the most underrated Rush songs in my opinion.
Just a showcase of time changes and raw talent.
One of my favorite rush songs. Great to see people vibing to this. Check out different strings.
Again anything live will probably be more than you would expect.. But I'd recommend Xanadu from Exit Stage Left, One Little Victory from Rio, and Headlong Flight from R40. R40 is from their 40th anniversary tour. So their final tour. They were still in their prime.
A definite band to acknowledge for their uniqueness. I am a Jethro Tull freak (and recommend you review the catalog from the beginning(1968-1987)However they are
My favorite band replacing Yes and Genesis as second best of the progressive bands of all time Keep on exploring the bands of the 70’s
First time I heard Natural Science live was at Fiddlers Green in Denver, i can't recall the tour, but as great a track as the studio version is, there was just something extra special about the live version... great reaction and love seeing others "first times" and the appreciation for these guys.
Anything they have done live or not RUSH is a top 5 rock band had the privilege to see them live with GUNS N ROSES as opening act
About time you did more Rush! Great review, more please!
Been a Rush fan since '82, and I still marvel that three guys are making such huge music.
This band was so carzy good that we have to wait at least 1000 years to hear anything like this or ever...
They are truly masters of their craft....check out some of their work from their final recordings. May I suggest Malignant Narcissism (live Snakes and Arrows) for a great jam session and The Garden (live version of course). Thanks for a great review!!!
The garden .. tear jerker for sure
The Icons
Awsome Jam!! All put their hearts into this song. Keepem coming
Right on. Thanks for sharing.
A Show of Hands is so powerful, both CD and DVD. The Analog Kid from Different Stages is another good display of their skill, and Jacob's Ladder from Exit Stage Left
This song has my favorite Rush (Peart) lyric of all time.
The most endangered species, the honest man
Will still survive annihilation
Forming a world
State of integrity
Sensitive, open, and strong
YES! More RUSH please!! 🇨🇦
Don't forget, Geddy also plays the keyboards on the floor with his right foot while singing and 'Slappin' Dat Bass!'
exactly everyone in the band has such big sound that in particular parts each stands out
Another beautiful song by Rush. 'We are Planets to Each Other" Snakes & Arrows, a great tour. "Far Cry" "Anthem" Live 1976 from the "Fly by Night" the first album Neil wrote. ❤🔥
Funny you say that "it's like they've been playing together since they were kids"....THEY DID! LOL!
This is one of my favorites from Rush.
I highly recommend you check out where's my thing here it is it's a fantastic live performance with an amazing drum solo in it
I saw them over 20 times and loved every show, and every style change they evolved through. And they sounded best when they were doing it in the late 80s.
Rush The Garden Live.
The best Band of all centurys
One "newer" Rush song that hardly ever gets love, but is pretty heavy and I believe right up their alley would be "Driven". They would love this one.
Do the live version on Different Stages!
@@lewisbernstein4272 Definitely a great idea....Thanks, brother!
what can i say ...THE BEST BAND ON THIS PLANET EVER
Saw Rush lead off for Zappa in 76. So awesome
Was at this show…❤
if they ever invent time travel i would take my first trip back to one of their live concerts
