Happy Birthday Conrail!

On this day in 1976, the Consolidated Rail Corporation was formed to save railroading in the northeast. Conrail went on to be a big success, however it was not to last. In 1999, Conrail would split between CSX and Norfolk Southern. Today, Conrail lives on in the hearts of many as a once great railroad that saved railroading in the northeast.
I find it funny that Conrail was founded on April Fools Day.

Good ol Conrail. I remember the grandpa of one of my neighbors growing up was a disgruntled Conrail engineer who watched as it all fell apart and got forced into early retirement.
