    The lyrics are from the poem by James Agee. He is from the South. As a southerner myself, I never pictured the cold and frost others hear in this piece. My husband and I had this played at our wedding. I married him after a devastating divorce from a 29 year old marriage and he was a widower. We found the phrase “all is healed, all is health” to be a good statement for how ready we were to live in the present, with present gifts. It was a garden wedding on a summer’s day.

      The poem is even talking about summer. But it just sounds like a Christmas song for some reason. 😂

    Sure On This Shining Night
    Sure on this shining night
    Of star made shadows round,
    Kindness must watch for me
    This side the ground.
    The late year lies down the north.
    All is healed, all is health.
    High summer holds the earth.
    Hearts all whole.
    Sure on this shining night I weep for wonder wand'ring far
    alone
    Of shadows on the stars.

    My choir did this song at Christmas and I was almost in tears every time we sang it, even now I just think about how beautiful it is and I choke up

      I know, right? My husband sang it with The Mapleton Chorale, and I just gushed tears every frigging time they sang it! I am so NOT a crier. It takes a whole lot to get me to EVER cry. Seriously, I cry about twice per year (like today, when I put Memorial Day flowers on the grave of my dear friend's stillborn baby girl...) but this song just hits every emotional chord in my body. I love it. I want The Mapleton Chorale to sing it at my funeral...only I won't be having a funeral, because I'm donating my body to the University of Utah Medical School. Oh, well. Perhaps I can get them to sing it at my mother's...though she is in her 90th year and still healthier and faster and prettier than anyone I know, so she will probably never die. Ha!
      Morten Lauridsen is amazing. Have you sung his version of O Magnum Mysterium?

    This song makes the heart swell with its beauty--we were made for this fullness, and Lauridsen has captured a glimpse of what God gives to those who love.

    I'm from the California San Joaquin county. I remember being called up to perform for the county honor choir in 2014 back when I was a tenor 1 freshman. Just remembering how all the sections sounded in the ensemble was incredible. This song will always have a special place for me❤

    My dear friend Joni Eareckson Tada shared this with me--neither song nor poem had I ever known before. Breath-taking. Inexorable applies ... so does ineffable as it is beautiful beyond saying.

    Otherworldly melody? Yes, but I also picture this as music of the North. Bitter cold air, Frozen lakes, all scenery in black and white, steam on the exhale and on the inhale a burning sensation with a touch of glacier and a certain sweetness. Thank you Mr. Lauridson. This melody invoked memories.

    • @swirlydudefan3318
      @swirlydudefan3318 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, indeed, it is music of the North! It makes me think of the unmistakable scent, so clean and cold, of the air after a heavy fall of snow.
      Although I must agree that the balance between piano and voices is not the best, I think the tone quality of the choir is gorgeous beyond belief. Also, the slide show adds tremendously to the overall experience and complements the mood of the music perfectly.

    Morten Lauridsen's sublime choral harmonies perfectly capturing the poet's mood, wonderfully conducted and performed by David Childs and his choir, and depicted with stunning images. Perfection. Thank you.

    I sang this in my university's choir about a year and a half ago and, though the second alto part is a little boring, I really enjoyed doing it.

    • @randompasserbyer
      @randompasserbyer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      My college is doing this song right now and I'm a first alto. I'm jealous of the first altos that get to stand next to the second altos because the harmonies between the two parts are just _beautiful._ And the hecking C that we get to hit on "I weep" just. gets me. every time. It's such a sorrowful note.

    The power of this piece which to me is enormous is to bend with the obvious tempo bends. As Lauridsen plays it you can hear them, and if you listen there are even more. So to drive the tempo-- sterilizes this piece for me. Of course still beautiful. However, just relax the tempos-- relax them more than you think and then you will be closer. This piece is transcendent!

    My beloved high school choir teacher I had in the early ‘70s passed away a few months ago. “There will be rest” and a few others were played at his funeral. Set me as a Seal was another. Theyyy had been sung by his later choirs. He was a marvelous man, and teacher.
    Does anyone know similar pieces. to these? I’m looking!
