    I just picked up a 1986 Schwinn Mirada for $75 that I swear had less than 100 miles on it and stored inside it’s while life. I love that it has 559x21 rims, 710mm wide bars, and a more upright riding position. My riding position honestly isn’t far off from my 2018 Specialized Camber FSR. It’s amazing how some things come full circle. I’m planninf to 1x it with a Microshift Advent 1x9 drivetrain, Shimano XT V-brakes, and Wheelset with Rhyno-Lite rims laced to Deore hubs. I could do most of this within the $300 budget.
    I believe taking vintage bikes out to the trails is a different kind of fun. Sure, they don’t flow like a modern bike, but trails that were boring become fun again. It’s like taking a crossover SUV on a rough Forest Service road. While it may be super easy for a lifted Jeep, the crossover will have to chose just the right line to make it.

      RIGHT! I broke the cardinal sin of buying a bike that doesn't fit. That's what I get for going after a specific model instead of the best bang for the buck like Rob.

      Chinese parts.
      Disc brakes, mechanical, 160mm
      3x7 speed
      22-32-42 crankset
      Square taper BB
      14-30 sprocket

    I'd love to see someone bring the nicest new department store bike $300 will buy, and use it as a yardstick for the other restomod bikes. I'm 50/50 on weather it would make it through the trail unscathed.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would have loved to have seen that too. However, all of my friends are too smart to spend $300 of their money on a department store bike that won't even be worth $10 at the end of the challenge. Even if somebody wanted a walmart bike, even those are sold out nationwide.
      There's no doubt a restored vintage bike will have much more durable and higher quality components than a new dept store bike. Yet on paper, the dept bike will win with disc brakes, full suspension, and being brand new. Calvin's Rocky Mountain will always be better than any dept store bike you'll ever be able to get, even in 50 years.

    • @clipless03
      @clipless03 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, my point exactly.
      Even someone new to the sport could buy a decent used bike and a set of basic bike tools and learn to fix it up with TH-cam University. It's easy to be intimidated by the kind of builds Old Shovel and people like him put out, but really you just got to get out there and wrench. The sense of accomplishment that comes from learning a new skill is one of life's great joys.

    • @hardtailparty
      @hardtailparty  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@clipless03 the trickiest part for new riders is knowing all the stabdards, which bikes we're good donors, etc. Without the experience and knowledge around these older bikes, someone could easily spend $200 on a turd that isn't upgradable.
