I think an overhand knot is more like THE MOTHER OF ALL KNOTS. Thank you Jason for sharing!

Nicely done. Thank you for sharing. A point often overlooked is that knotting is a performance art. Like all performance arts, it requires regular practice. So, if one carries a short cord in a pocket, it will be available for practice whenever one must wait quietly. While not as interesting as a smart phone, the cord is cheaper - and one can then remember how to tie that stupid knot.

For sake of completeness: there is also the canadian jam knot (aka arbor knot) which is a binding knot and consists of two overhand knots

Yes The Canadian Jam Knot Rocks with it's 3 simple overhand knots!!!
      aka the "sleeping bag knot"...

Jason I totally agree with you, although the Bowline is a life-saving knot it has been REPLACED.. which I love it gets way too much credit, the Scott's locking bowline is better!
The simple overhand knot is FOUNDATIONAL to almost all other knots...
However "humble' and "unkingly" it is it was the first knot I learned, a simple slip knot...and of course the "square knot" that we were all taught at 5yrs old, to tie our shoes it's fundamental.

AWESOME! Agree 100% As I'm still a begginer in knotting, I needed that kind of explanation. Thank You very much Sir for sharing Your knowledge. Greetings from France ^_^

I still think the bowline is the king of knots.
The overhand is more of a jack of (all trades) knots.

It seems the overhand knot might be better termed "the knot" as everything else can be explained as a variation or glorification of "the knot."
