@@DexTVReacts Yeah you gotta do the video because of the way they break it down in the video. The group KRS One was in is Called B.D.P. Boogie Down Productions.. One of the most important MCs ever. In '87, BDP's album Criminal Minded changed the way rappers rapped and beat makers produced right alongside Paid in Full. He was also instrumental in ushering in the conscious era in the late 80s. "My Philosophy" should probably be the next song you do so you get what KRS is all about in his own words.
Can you even imagine.. we had Public Enemy's first album, BDP and Eric B & Rakim in that same time span of 1987! I played all three albums that summer.. plus LL Cool J's Bigger & Deffer.
Boogie down productions started with their first album Criminal Minded. It is one of the foundations of gangster rap. In 1987 his boy and BDP co-founder DJ Scott La Rock was shot in the back of the head after trying to diffuse a tense situation. His is said to be the first murder of a hip hop artist. After that KRS One as Boogie Down Productions came out with the album By All Means Necessary, a stone cold classic. He created the Stop the Violence Movement. The first track, My Philosophy, was his new manifesto. He was going to be a teacher, straight conscience hip hop.
It's still funny reading this after all these decades people claiming "Criminal Minded" is a gangster rap album while 99% isn't about gangsters at all and even the song "9mm Goes Bang" has an whole different meaning compared to average gangster rap shit like NWA, Above The Law, Snoop or Tupac and the rest of detrimental gangster rappers in the 80s and 90s.
KRS One is one of those Mt. Rushmore MCs... in the '80s, he was top 5 no doubt. He basically advanced hip hop with his battle against MC Shan and Queensbridge. You gotta do "The Bridge Is Over." That's the song that inspired Nas to step his game up and pursue being an MC hard.

KRS's first few albums had a lot of help from his crew Boogie Down Productions so they all pitched in, but KRS was the main rapper.

KRS-One is probably my favourite hip hop artist. There are so many classic tracks, it's really hard to recommend just one. I guess you can't go wrong with "Outta here" it's basically his life story, which is told amazingly. Really digging your channel, brother, I am reliving these classics vicariously and enjoying it to the fullest. Big up
Always loved this song. KRS-One one of the GOATs. And yeah this song was mad relatable. I remember my moms couldn't afford fly sneakers either lol. In Junior High, I did have Nikes but they was the one on the bottom of the display that was like 30 bucks. I didn't get the Air Max or Penny's until High school when I could afford it on my own.
Dex this is a super deep rabbit hole. A pioneer in the game of hip hop. One of the best to ever do it. The spokes man of the game. You have now entered the south Bronx where hip hop started. You have a life’s worth of music still to go fam 😂😂😂
One of my all time favorites songs EVER. It perfectly describes what it was like to grow up in a NYC hood from the 1960s through the 90s. “To stay on course you have to roll with force” which to means you could not be soft to survive in the hood. You ain’t have to be hard-that has its own set of drama-BUT you couldn’t be soft.

@DexTVReacts KRS-ONE is a GOAT. His battle vs the Juice Crew was legendary in the 80s and shaped hip-hop. After he dropped The Bridge is Over in the 80s it would take Nas's Illmatic to lyrically revive his hood.
If you want to be a hip hop historian, then you have to go back to grandmaster flash and the furious five’s “The Message”, there are others as well, but you have to listen to that song.
Once upon a time, KRS was included with Rakim in most critics' all-time top two MCs. (See Blaze magazine in '98, with Ra at #1, and Ego Trip, Elliot Wilson's old joint, around the same time, with KRS at #1.) It's hard to imagine now. Rakim still impresses younger generations, KRS less so. (A recent Forbes list of the top 50 left KRS off entirely. I saw people speak up for Black Thought, Scarface, and Big Boi, who were also left off, but not KRS.) He's too big of a figure in hip-hop history to sum up his impact here, but no one was truer to the game. He spoke directly to the streets, though he himself was conscious from the beginning. I would probably choose this as his best song. I work at a group home on the West Side of Chicago. A few years back we had a young man, an old soul, who knew about this video and would play it a lot. I remember one time a g-type dude a few years older than me, a coworker, who'd spent some time in prison, came in rapping this song word for word while the teenager played it. I was living in Ft. Worth, Tx., when "Love Is Gonna Get'cha" came out. The song impressed me at 11 years old, but I didn't know anything about what KRS was talking about. Decades later I knew this song was official when my coworker started rapping it.
