What an amazing horse! Seeing these 1973 Triple Crown wins for the 1st time in 2015 and my gosh, how wonderfully God made him to be His horse. The Kentucky win was thrilling, the preakness was astonishing and the Belmont win was amazing.
That horse just got faster as the races progressed! He was increasing his leads at the end of the Derby and the Preakness. The Belmont and it's longer distance just showed, when given the track, what a 'tremendous machine' he was.
We will never see a great horse like secretariat .Sham was a great horse who won many races. 1973 Sham won the Santa Anita gold cup . Also many other big races at other tracks ridden by Lafit Pincay.
"For Secretariat, the only point of reference, is Secretariat itself ...... .no one can ever compare it to any other horse" !!!" Charles Hatton, horse racing analyst. Greetings from Venezuela.
I read that during the Derby the announcer for a worldwide overseas broadcast said as he crossed finish line.... "It's SECRETARIAT, and he's GOT his Kentucky Derby !!!
You're welcome.. glad you enjoy the race footage. Last I read Party Manners was sold and sent to Venezuela a while back.. He was Phipps owned and bred so you know the bloodlines are top notch.
I don't underestimate Ron Turcotte. He said himself that he had come to trust the horse. What Ronnie did was let him go instead of try to put a strangle-hold on him.
@kwgrid read Bill Nack's bio of Secretariat. The complete story is all laid out in that book. It puzzles and infuriates me that both Lucien and Penny never opened up and acknowledged the blue puss-oozing quarter to half dollar abscess just to the right of the bit on his upper lip. When he leaned into it that's why he jerked his head back in the Wood Memorial. It was found the morning of that race and shown to Lucien but he didn't think it'd bother him.
If you really look at Secretariat as he’s rounding the turn and then during the stretch in the Derby it’s apparent how much more determined he was to pass everyone and win. His head is bobbing faster and he’s clawing at the ground harder.
@kwgrid you're welcome. Turcotte was hurt and distressed when he found out about the abscess bec, at that point, "tight reined" Secretariat bec S still ran heavy headed at that point. Tight reining him made the pain even worse. If he had known, Turcotte said he wld've kept the reins loose and thought Sec still wld've won. As it was, he kept jerking his head back due to tight reins and the abscess being just to right under upper lip at the bit. A damn shame.
Hey does anyone know where to find the full video of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness from this clip? I mean I’ve found the black and white ones and grainy videos all over TH-cam but Id love to know where to find these good quality color videos they used here! Anyone know where to find them?
Even Penny Chenery said it was not a strategic move to ask Secretariat that early in the race and that it had to be what the horse wanted to do. If Turcotte took credit for that, he never mentioned it to Penny.
@SuperBeatlesguy ... and somewhere Turcotte said he cld've increased the Preakness lead by maybe 10 lengths..... "but I just kept thinking.... Belmont"
Did Penny and/or Lucien ever discuss, back then, the abcess Secretariat had in his mouth? Was that part of the movie correct? I haven't found any other mention of it.
Partymanners, I too am always very appreciative of the race footage, and special footage you provide viewers here on TH-cam...If it was not for you, there would be alot of great race footage fans like me would miss out on. Thank you very much,,And I loved Party Manners...Wasn't he sold overseas for stud duty? Great ped if I recall...
@MrKramertheGoat lucky you ! I hope Laffit Pincay has been reading the comments and seeing videos for past few yrs here on YTube fm people who have paid loving and even heartbreaking (me) tribute to Sham. Especially the video tribute fm kierkigaard (sp?) to Sham and ONLY Sham. You shld watch it if haven't already. Also hope people at festival expressed love and admiration for him. Does Laffit ever visit Sham at Walmac Farm. My dream is to go to KY b4 I kick the bucket.
@bon1042 Yep...a damn shame. As I commented to you on another clip, Bill Nack sorta nailed it when he said "If Secretariat had been handled by other than flawed human beings, he would have been undefeated." I reckon those factors are what makes it all a gamble, if you know what I mean...... :|
@kwgrid cont. Sec's behavior in that race shld've made it clear. He had a death in his family and acc to Nack's book Gaffney didn't want to add to his burden by telling him. Eddie Sweat knew about it. Nack asked Penny about it when started book. She said WHAT abscess?? Evidently she and Lucien never talked about it. Lucien said yrs later maybe that caused the loss of race. MOST important, Turcotte knew nothing !! Later when told it was huge relief and he KNEW why Sec "didn't fire."
I humbly disagree with your assessment. There is no way any of those horses would have enough left to beat Secretariat. He didn't even hit all gears in that race....loped home. Charlie Davis, Secretariat's exercise rider, was watching the race and he said he had never seen him "jump and take off like that." It was too soon to guage a slow pace but even so, if Ron had guaged it and Secretariat was obviously wanting to go, he just cooperated with the horse. mho
you're repeating yourself..... I recommend you lay off the steroids, they can really mess you up, but on the other hand, it would be appear you already are messed up. find something else to do with your time, dear.

elizabeth smith, man that chick Anderson can really spit it out
The Preakness amazes me more than the others. For him to completely circle the field like that on the 1st turn is just incredible!

HE WAS SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL, SIMPLY THE BEST!!!❤❤❤
