Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah just graduated from Carleton College, where she studied Sociology and Anthropology. Her future aspirations include attending graduate school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for 3+ years and living together in Minneapolis for a year. On June 15th, 2019 they got engaged!!!! Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

I once read a book where the lead protagonist, a quadriplegic, was pushed off a cliff into the water. Being unable to swim myself, those few pages were really traumatic. 😭

Hello there. I discovered you guys on TH-cam the other day, and I am so happy to see two people doing so well together. It's true love. I love your sense of humor and the way you make each other laugh. I think that's one of the most important things in a good relationship. To treat each other well. You are simply the best example of how people should treat each other. I wish you all the best and a long life together, you are made for each other. If you ever should consider it then Copenhagen, Denmark is a possibility.
The last time I was at Anna Maria Island was 35 yrs ago. Great place, I remember riding around and there was a house with a tree growing out of it. Enjoy your time in Florida, beautiful place

You should go down to siesta key in Sarasota it’s like 30 minutes from Anna Maria island and for a beach it is really accessible and has a mat that takes you almost to the water.

Anna Maria is a beautiful beach and those sunsets are remarkable. I was born about 10 miles from there & now live in Georgia. I love watching you & Shane and can see the love in each others eyes when you look at each other.
Wow, you guys are giving Chloe such a wonderful, beautiful life. She looks so happy and content. It brings tears to my eyes thinking about how much she must've suffered before you two saved her, but hopefully that'll all be overshadowed in her mind by the loving memories you're creating with her.

They have a rubber hose/shower head you attach to the faucet. Or you could use a camping shower .. they have multiple kinds. Enjoy your trip! Chole had a lovely new family!

It's satisfying that the little table fits perfectly on top of the other for your makeshift tripod. I took my 2 mini Dachshunds to the ocean for the first time and I've never seen them happier! They barked at the waves before deciding they meant no harm.

LOVE you guys and your take on disability advocacy ... especially the way you note that while direct advocacy with a business is a good thing to do, it shouldn’t be seen as every disabled person’s responsibility. Among other things, at SOME point we should be able to rely on businesses and others just sort of knowing what accessibility is, right? Or at least know that if you’re going to be all pious about your business’ inclusion, you should maybe make sure you actually are inclusive.

I lived in St. Petersburg for about 20+ years and there's no view more beautiful than from the Skyway Bridge; especially sunrise and sunsets. Also wanted to say about the sign at the shop with stairs, I'm sure ya'll wouldn't have been the first people to mention the irony to them. I'm disabled too and sometimes I don't feel like discussing situations, either. I miss the gulf coast and love watching ya'll enjoying yourselves ❤❤❤
6:51 wow that really is an amazing sunset, it's so cool to see clouds that are under-lit like that, it's like the sun is below the cloudline.
I was on the beach at Anna Maria last night for that sunset. It was mesmerizing. Next year vacay on AMI.

Anna Maria Island is probably my favorite beach in Florida. My best friend, Jim, and I used to go there almost every weekend before he passed away. Great memories, glad y'all were able to visit. Keep us posted on any meet and greets you will be having while in Florida. I live in Tampa and would love to meet y'all.
I agree that Florida has the most beautiful sunsets ever I grew up there and spent most of my life there but you know the constant heat gets very old because the humidity is terrible and I got to the point where hurricane really became annoying so you have the best of both worlds

I totally got the humor in the sign and then no accessibility or ramp for a person with a disability. People need to get over themselves and laugh more. This video just made my day.

Im glad you're able to find relatively accessible places to visit. I have that issue when we travel to Florida, new England states and many other places. Glad you get out and about to do "normal" things. I am not saying that rudely, I too am in a chair for a different reason but hear that often. "How nice that I can do that normally". Here in Sweden it is becoming more and more common that shops remodel to accommodate us in a wheelchair but I remember the different arguments heard from shop owners in the beginning like "Why do i need to have a ramp? We never have any people on wheelchairs coming to the store." and stuff lite that, haha. Some stores did something like getting an automated door opener but still had steps into the store. Some made accessible bathrooms which was great but still had like 10 steps outside.

Glad you’re having an awesome trip. I saw that Instagram post. There were actually quite a few comments about how appalling the sign was. Just to add some context to the situation, the sign didn’t actually belong to the shop it sat in front of. It belonged to the entire shopping center the shop was in. There was enough information in the picture to discover where that was and the website for the shopping center advertised about how everyone and all abilities are welcome. It also looks like the sign gets moved around from time time. It didn’t always sit there. It’s good that you found it humorous. I wonder if it’s ever been brought to the attention of the people who work there. I guess we’ll never know.
Ohhh we were driving on the same bridge just a week ago! And we went to Anna Maria, too! My son and I... and our Doodle would have been so excited if we ran into you!
You both are the best...love your videos! Just a comment about Chloe allergies. We had a cocker with dreadful ear problems and skin issues. Some one told us to switch to a premium kibble with no corn and wheat. Cleared up in a couple or so weeks. Wished we had known earlier, as she was deaf by then, and $$$ in treatments that didn't work.
Use a bucket instead if a cup! Makes the job easier and faster! Anna Maria Island is my favorite! Enjoy! 😊
Shane I share your pain. I’m a stroke survivor which left my left side in braces and in a wheelchair. One thing that amazes me are doctors offices. I can’t tell you the countless offices that are not easily accessible for wheelchair. I wonder if you experience the same thing.
In Seattle, many of the older buildings have a stair or two entry but there is no ready way to put in a ramp without blocking part of the sidewalk. So many places have portable ones and a sign stating how to get someone's attention (usually a phone number).
Man, I love you guys!!!! Also, some people, like myself, have limitations that you can’t see. I can’t do any stairs or inclines, because I have only 30% use of my lungs. So ramp or stairs I’m screwed! 😂 Oh the irony of that sign. I’m glad you guys have a good sense of humor about it. Looks like you guys are having fun. Chloe is such a sweet girl. Thank you for giving her such an awesome home. She’s got the life! 💕

Y'all are so lucky! I'm sitting here in Arkansas watching this in a thunderstorm with tornado watches sprinkled around that is supposed to freeze tonight and may cause sleet or even snow tomorrow.
I’m not a baby, but for baths I use a sturdy 16oz plastic fast food pop cup;.Can’t get another; they’re flimsy now and collapse in my disabled hands. I bet the gorgeous sunset made the traffic a lot more bearable. It’s stressful to argue; I don’t blame you for limiting it, hopefully to a few more significant situations. I've been to Anna Maria twice, for about a week both times. Unfortunately the first time was during red tide and dead fish were all over the beach; but besides that it is absolutely beautiful!
I have an 11yr old Labradoodle that has trouble with her ears. The only med that seems to work is called Claro. They put it deep in the ear, works for 3 weeks, you don't clean their ears, nothing. Works like a charm. Just something to keep in mind if it becomes an issue.
You need to send samples to the lab to grow cultures to see what bacteria, etc it is each time as each inf is different and requires different treatments. Always get seen by a vet

When I saw you by the pool, that was literally my first thought, Hannah would save ya no worries! No testing whether the chair floats on vacation! :) Good thinking bringing the ramps just in case! Warm weather adventures would be lots of fun! Aww I love that sweet Chloe got to play in the ocean! Had to make sure you had good light for me....you definitely always have things to say, most of which are informative (until Hannah chimes in with nope) and very hilarious! I also love how Hannah's nope, doesn't distract you from continuing lol Poor Hannah would have got lots of love and get well wishes if Shane hadn't edited it out...Hope you feel better quick Hannah! Poor itchy pup, that doesn't sound fun at all! Inaccessible is not good! I love the sign!
I absolutely love y’all. Shane is hilarious when he is telling a story about places he goes and makes up dates and what the city is named for. Sometimes I don’t know he is joking. My favorite episode is when you told the story about when the refrigerator man came over. Hannah you are beautiful and a very patient and caring person.

I have a Golden doodle also. I use a natural flea spray which is so much better tan the icky flea stuff they put on them. I also use ear cleaner once a month which will keep ear infections away. That product is by Nature Vet. Please use holistic products as much as possible and find a holistic vet. I also had to change my pups food because he was allergic to the food he was initially eating. He is now eating Origens 6 fish dog food and that’s what works for him. No more itching. Good luck!

My husband is in a wheelchair, we live in the UK and we get this all the time too. If you don't laugh it will get you down. I don't think able bodied people understand just how difficult it is. Who wants to go out and complain constantly? That's fun... Not. Just make a joke of it as Hannah and Shane did and move on.
Yea. Its like if you go out and enjoy life despite things they judge you and if you sit home they judge you. Its like thst with disability who is visible and its the same with disability who isnt visible. I think some people havent had much struggle for real so they dont get what it means to make the best out of it despite your situation. Its sad.
I'm able-bodied but have a lot of mental health issues, I get some of the struggles, if you don't laugh you cry.

My parents have a house on Anna Maria Island for more than twenty years. I have to sell it soon since my father passed away two years ago, and my mother abandoned the house to move in with my brother across the bridge, but not near me, in Bradenton. I am suing to be Conservator of our Estate. Back in 2017, Hurricane Irma destroyed the main Pier on the Bay side, as you can see at first frame in the background of this video. That was supposed to be rebuilt, but investors apparently ran into financial, technical, or legal delays, and the Pier still has not been restored. Previously it had a restaurant, and allowed for fishing and exploration, hanging out, as well as eating. You could have strolled there with the wheel chair easily before Hurricane Irma struck, but Shane would have been afraid of falling overboard, so good thing. The Waterfront Restaurant is also good. It was surprising for me to see you guys so close to my home.
I have Cerebral Palsy and saw the photo on Instagram a few days ago. I laughed out loud when I saw it! I love laughing at stuff that’s unintentionally funny, which the sign did indeed fall into that category.
