Just bought the plugin and already love it. I've waited for this for years and refreshed the plogue site every day or two to see if the c64 plugin is there. And today I was rewarded. My wife told me I sounded like a teen girl at a Take That concert in the 90s.
For me it's the FC (Nintendo). I refreshed it today in fact. I've been asking them "when are you going to release Chipsynth FC??" for like 7 years now. Hopefully soon. But the C64 is a huge deal too.
I’m still genuinely blown away that you essentially had to make a C64 emulator to get SID files working. It’s actually really interesting to see on a development level all the weird hardware tricks that were implemented in the name of sound on the C64. Hopefully you won’t have to do this level of emulation for future chipsynth stuff, but awesome work either way.
@@Plogue that’s what I was thinking knowing what I know about NSF files. Now I realize how annoying it might potentially be for the FC if you end up adding any expansion chips.
Thank you so much for all your hard work on this, David. I'm really looking forward to diving deep into this plugin over the holidays and making something cool with it in the new year.
You’re a madman. Bravo. 👏 can’t believe you can grab frames from sounds within SID files and rebuild them. Wow. Thanks also for pricing it affordably. It makes it a ‘no brainer’ for me. Have a great weekend! Hope it’s not unreasonably cold in Montreal! 🥶
Wow, this plug could possibly be the best SID player out there now - please consider supporting the HVSC archive file directly (7z / rar), the ULTIMATE source for C64 music :) This will also give easy access to an endless supply of instruments.
Did you say “possibly be?” Have you lost your mind? It most irrefutably, most irrevocably is the absolute best chip synth on the market. Do you understand how accurate this is?
Ayoye le synthé des 8 premières secondes c'est SWINTH! Combien de fois j'ai fait jouer les 4 premières et la dernière Enola Gay. Des fois j'aimerais retourner à ces moments... M'enfin.
Glad the YT Algorithm sent this my way - I had no idea about it! My hardware C64 has two 8580's I use with the MSSIAH cartridge. But my Mac needs this :) Instabuy in the next week or two when I have the funds.
Playing the SID in the standalone application with all the modulation options feels like magic. And poly mode, and Mods, ... I wish there could be a split multimode ;). YES, I would totally agree, this is THE new reference! And a new refrence for playing the SID live. Maybe a little GUI improvement, in my humble opinion, would be a second row of tabs in the MODS page instead of the small < > buttons. But overall I like the reactive GUI design and the excelent manual.
0:15 I have the same series (but bigger) Adam Audio A7X studio monitors made in Germany😍They are so good. That special tweeter produces crystal clear highs. Only one thing that is worth to remember that they don't go very low with frequency, because they are designed to work with dedicated subwoofer Adam SUB7 or 8 or 10
Mine are A8X. No complaints. Night and day with my older monitors (Event 2020). Don't know what I'ds do without them now. I don't mix much, just want to listen to synth tones and A/B compare.
Absolutely mental, love it. Huge fan of chipcrusher/speech. I've been on midibox or monomachine for sid sating because I got sick of HW troubles on my commie gear, but I gotta cop this, unreal.
So now after I bought the plugin, which is really fantastic, I have a question: does the multi frame analysis work only with specific type of SID files? I loaded a random SID file from HVSID and it offered me only to grab a single frame. Which of course doesn’t allow to grab the modulations. I admit I am not an expert on SID files, I only used the real thing back in the days and VICE nowadays.
RSIDs will grey out the ‘grab sequence’ section (and speed) since we do not know where the sound routine is and when its called, compared to PSIDs where we have to call the play routine. Hope this makes sense
@@Plogue thank you for the quick reply, obviously I am not as deep in the toooic as you guys 😀 Of course my memory might fail me but for me chipsynth C64 sounds like the real deal! So good! Best Buy for me on 2023!!
Not with this directly. We've made a prototype sid exporter but generated sids would be way too big to play on a real thing (too many register writes). Not much demand for that (we get this requested for many of our products) who knows
This looks pretty amazing! Thanks for your effort. What is the song you play at the beginig of the video? I played it on my C64 and used it as an intro music in a short video in 1996 but couldn't find the song since then.
sorry just saw this comment. the answer is yes, but the MIDIBox rig is too slow for constant register updates, so its fine for simple presets without ultra fast modulations only. USB MIDI hooked SID systems are better. Not many of those around though, mine is a prototype.
@@Plogue Interesting. I have a Sammichsid and it's amazing to me that the sidplayer function works over midi at all, but it relies on a lot of very old software. It's best used as a synth rather than trying to make it do multi-channel C64 stuff.

C64 and FC have been developed in parallel and share a lot of the emulator/nsf/psid/logic. They are brothers.@@RobertoVillegas-vincent404

wait, a full-blown c64 emulator in a vst?!?
yup.

ouaip classique des classiques. toujours la chair de poule.
mmm, Stationary Ark always sounds so good on a SID
While making the presets I figured the magic resides on the phasing of long releases of two SID channels of PWM. a single channel will not work.
Incredible work! Congratulations ! Really crazy amount of work that you put into it and also very cool features!

I love the excruciating detail. 😋
its fantastic i have used it in some days now just lisining too demos trough it :)
I'm pretty sure if this would ever drop on the scene with a patcher, the demo soundtrack in the patcher would be done with this vst.

ESQ-M in the rack? Next Chipsynth will be an Ensoniq 5503 emulation.:)
After FC chip of course
We do own more gear that we have time to emulate haha.

please give us an update on SFZ player and a ARIA Player update because some sounds are not working when we install them

What would be the best way to create a .sid file from the vst/daw and transfer it to a real C64?

Is that a transposed Battle Squadron High Score tune at the beginning?
By the way, great work! I bought the VST and it's nice and rich of features for a very reasonable price. Already loving it! Good stuff :)
Incredible
So can we write our own code in the emulator and/or load in old SID programs from our youth?
I wouldnt _write_ it in there but surely can load it!

Its "Swinth", one of the great classics everyone used to have a copy of csdb.dk/release/?id=34529

Another version without the animation was "Synth Sample". I believe the tunes are the same. Stationary Ark! ❤

Hmm tricky. We would need to import the Sid Station sysex format. We had plans for this. maybe in a future update
