Pre-soaking hard and large seeds is what my great-great-grandmother, grand-parents, and my dad always did. I do it too. I even pre-soak my winter squash seeds, but those for only a hour or two. I gain about 3 to 4 days germination. Short growing season here in zone 4a. This is a very good video. Big thumbs up!

Last spring, I tried presoaking some of my seeds in homemade BOSS lactobacillus serum and had not only 100 percent germination but stronger growth with less inputs throughout the season. Over the winter, I've added the BOSS to my ongoing anaerobic garbage can composter that I keep in the garage. It's made compost in half the time as in the past without it and it's the freshest, sweetest smelling compost I've ever produced.
I'm definately trying this. Old trick from my mother is to put dried egg shells in the base of the plant pot then the soil, when growing tomatoes from seed - have to say, the difference is incredible. :)

Some hot peppers take an extremely long time to germinate so it may not be called pre “soaking” but I always pre germinate my peppers on wet paper towel in a covered container.
I've always used wet paper towels to soak pepper seeds, 3-4 days is all it takes for a sprout. Whether it's a jalapeno, hab, ghost, scorp or a reaper. It will take longer for hot pepper plants to mature but they all germinate in a similar timeline in my own personal experience.
Try planting a dry seed and water it in heavily with a 3% peroxide solution and mist with the same solution. You should find your germination time improves. But you're right, the hotter they are, the longer they take it seems, my chocolate bhutlah peppers took forever to germinate.
I had trouble with ‘helmet head’ on my sproutling tomatoes and pre-soaking for a few hours prior to planting seemed to fix the problem. I think the extra moisture makes it easier for the first greens to escape the seed husk.

I would soak them for 6 hrs rinse with a cap full of 3% hydrogen peroxide that's been diluted into a 16 oz water bottle, then plant 1/8" deep into fresh seed starting mix, in full sun. Keep moist! But don't do this until day time temps are in the 70's -80's. If it's below 60 at night, bring them in. They need every trick in the book to have a chance

Idk about the "seeds that float" are not viable myth, i feel like the times i have tested this it's been inconclusive, and i have definitely germinated seeds that float... maybe it more matters for vegetable seeds, i can clearly recall soaking morning glory seeds and they all floated and they all germinated.
Aloha, I have not been having good results with mimosa seeds. I tried scarifying (emery board ) and not scarifying both seem to pop a teeny tiny root bud (?). And then nothing more. After 3 days I notice the water gets kind of cloudy and wonder if I should change it daily? I’m only getting like 3 actual sprouted seeds for the 12 planted. Is this normal ?
What about herb seeds such as lavender and spearmint? I'm having an issue growing these two. Any suggestions? I started them in a small container with soil but nothing so now I'm putting more seeds in a soaked paper towel in a plastic bag... I'm new to this so any help would be amazing!

I started onion seeds in seed starting mix and they did great at first - lots of good growth but then started getting weak and laying over (I did keep them trimmed to about 1-2” tall). I want to try again and maybe in potting soil this time but not sure if I have enough time now or if that’d even help. I’m in zone 6b and my last frost date is April 16. Should I just get starts from the nursery at this point? Thanks! 😀💕
Interesting info about seeds that are eaten by insects but it really depends on the insect, something as small as a rice grain is plenty big enough for small weevil species larva to complete their entire metamorfosis inside a single grain.

I've got some that I started that are on 16 or 17 days and I can't wait for them to pop up
I found thats usually because they are a few years old. My seeds from last year only took 3-4 days. Habaneros and bhut jolokias.
Especially some tropical peppers, but a heat mat will help.

I always soak hot pepper seeds (just for a couple hours) because they take so long to germinate if I don’t.
I always pre soak my peppers especially my super hot varieties. Seems to always help with these type of seeds.

From what I have gathered, just the thick seeds. Never carrots, lettuce and things along those lines.
If you add sugar to the soak it will speed germination and improve vigor. One tbsp sugar/gallon.
Already planted some peas but will make sure to soak my next set going in!! Thanks for explanation
Would soaking in a compost tea or compost extract solution expedite the germination process further? Assuming you have quality compost.

My peppers sprout nearly a week earlier when I soak them. I'm not sure if the chamomile or H2O2 are needed, but they don't seem to hurt.

Dogs! But your garden might be a little decimated. Perhaps a good fence is best option.
