Leica M6 vs. Contax G2 ft. Portra 800

  • I've wondered for some time now how different my Contax G2 really is in terms of results from a Leica M6. Today we find out thanks to my mate David who lent me his M6 for this experiment.
I shot Portra 800 on both cameras since it seemed like the Leica equivalent film stock haha.

I owne a G2 and an M7 and 90% of the time I prefer to take the G2 out. I know some people say the focus is not perfect but I have yet to miss focus on my G2 in the last 1.5 yrs I have owned it. I guess what really bugs me on the Leica M cameras is the 1/1000 of sec. I can never really shoot shallow in the day with the Leica, my G2 will do 1/6000 and that comes in so handy. I will admit the the view finder on the G2 can be a deal breaker for some but the photos I get out of the G2 are simply amazing with the Zeiss glass and well makes up for the viewfinder.

Awesome to have your perspective here as someone who owns and uses both! I also have not had issues with the G2 autofocus that I can think of in a very long time. Also excellent to hear some proper real world experience with the difference in shutter speeds haha! The Zeiss glass definitely makes up for the viewfinder, and to be honest I've never suffered beyond being minorly disgruntled with how tiny it is. Was just a bit of a religious experience seeing through the M6 one for the first time, especially in comparison haha! Thanks for sharing your insights!

the thing that has always kept me from buying a G2 is that if it ever breaks, it's dead. You can send an M6 to pretty much any camera repair store and have it fixed without a problem. Especially since Leica has relaunched the M6, repair parts will be available forever. By the way, there is also a chinese manufacturer that sells contax to m-mount conversion kits. if your G2 should ever break. 😅

    • @JLeoH
      @JLeoH ปีที่แล้ว +6

The new M6 is an MP, the spare parts do not match. If the lightmeter of the M6 breaks, it cannot not be fixed. The rest always can be, it's fully mechanical.

G2 is not that hard to fix, you just need to find the right guy. If you are worried about electronic parts breaking, M6 TTL suffers from the same issue.

Yea I don’t get people who make this argument, I shoot with a G1, the amount quoted for a Leica CLA is the price of a G1 body. For the price of a M6 with lens I could buy 3 G1s with lenses. Basically, if they’re dead, just get another body, still cheaper than owning and servicing a Leica. In the end it just comes down to user preference, I’d urge anyone who wants to get into the Contax system to just do it.

Man, I shot a lot of Portra 800 through a G2 and this was nostalgic to see. The photos looked exactly how I’d imagine - funny how the Leica looks just so different to me.

It had been like 4 years since I'd put portra 800 through it too ahah, I also really enjoyed it! Was fun to shoot a color film stock besides the 400 for once, I haven't shot any color 35mm in years actually. Glad that they had a nostalgic look for your experience though haha!
My view on the look of them was mainly just based on 100% zooms of the scans while editing this video tbh, I probably could've gone deeper into some of the color and rendering and such, but also excellent to know that I wasn't just imagining the G2 having the slightest optical edge ahah

@@willysheepskin I would have been interested to see a Leica lens that isn't a 40mm. Tbh, I didn't even know Leica did a 40mm lens until I googled it. And judging by the price point, probably leads credence to it not be as optically sound as the 35 or 50 summicrons.

As a Leica shooter who picked up a G1 + 28/45/90 last year, I enjoy the G1 tremendously. My 45 mm Planar also seems sharper than my 35 and 50 mm Summicrons but as you say, it may just be micro contrast. And about the M6, it’s all mechanical except for the meter so even if the electronics die, you’ll still have a working camera. Thanks for a good comparison!

The leica definitely seems like the more sensible choice given the age of the Contax at this point, although I’d have to sell my car for the leica so that isn’t likely to happen anytime soon lol!

I got all that for less than $2000USD. The two bodies had been CLA’d too. The lenses I use the most is the 35mm f2.8 and the 50mm f1.4. Still I’d take a Leica if someone gifted me one. According to the camera historians the Canon rangefinders of the 1950’s & 60’s were really on par with the older Leica I, II & III’s and a good match for the M2 & M3 which had just come out. The only Canon’s other than my rangefinders that I have are my EOS digital bodies and a EOS 1N RS film body. Those are nice because they all use the EF mount so all the EF lenses will work on the EOS bodies whether film or digital. Of course the new R series have a different mount so the EF lenses only work on them with an adapter. The F1 and FTB were also nice but I’ve never used them. If you want a F1 get the last iteration which I think is called the New F1. The F glass was all very good and compares nicely if not better than the Nikon lenses of the same period.

I always expected it to go first but it’s the one that lives in my camera bag and it just. keeps. going. This is indeed a captivating video. Nonetheless, I believe there's a point worth noting. If we're pitting the Zeiss lenses of the Contax against the Leica lenses for the Leica M6, a single comparison doesn't truly depict the complete scenario.
I possess both the G2 and the M6, and I adore them both, often carrying both while out and about. That being said, within the G2, the 45mm lens indisputably takes the lead in sharpness. Its sharpness is so renowned that even Leica users have adapted this lens into an M-lens using a conversion kit.
Of all the lenses I have, I would contend that the two sharpest are the 16mm and the 45mm. The 28, 35, 90, and the 30-70 are all commendable, but their sharpness doesn't quite compare to their Leica counterparts. The 45 is the sole lens that can match, or even surpass, the sharpness of Leica lenses.
When you use the G2 with its 35mm lens and the M6 with the latest Summilux or Summicron, it's quite evident that Leica's 35mm lenses are sharper. This isn't to imply that the M6 is automatically superior, as I have an immense affection for both cameras. However, it's noteworthy that you compared the finest lens on the G2 against a less superior lens on the M6. Nevertheless, excellent video and brilliant effort!

I own various Leica M bodies (M3, MP, M10), a G1 with the 21mm and external viewfinder, and a black G2 with the full set of 28, 45 and 90 in black. The main thing the G2 has on the M bodies is the faster shutter speed. The viewfinder on the G2 is also better with 28mm for people with glasses. On the MP, with glasses, I cannot see the entirety of the 28mm frame - no problem on the G2. Also, the Zeiss Biogon 28mm is a better lens (sharper, better corrected) than the Leica 28mm f2.8 (which I also own). The Leica MP rules supreme when using with any 35mm lens, at that focal length the MP shines, the same is true for 50mm and the M3.

@@willysheepskin Right on! I think any M is a good choice. I’ve wanted one for almost thirty years, but they’re soooo expensive. Last year I picked up a “user grade” copy that had been recently overhauled. It’s beat up cosmetically, but is mechanically excellent. After much thought (and using a screw mount 50mm with an adapter as my other Leica is a iiif and I already had that lens) I got the Voigtlander 40mm 1.4 used. The money I spent on the combo was limited, and while the 40mm gives me approximately 20% more than the 50mm frame line-it doesn’t bother me. It’s small, well built, affordable, had good image quality, was in my budget, and makes me want to pick it up. My favorite focal length is probably 28mm, so one might ask, why M3??? Ahah! 40/50mm ish… I love this, because it’s outside my comfort zone. If I could only have one focal length it would be around 40/50. 🤷🏽‍♂️. Keep ‘em coming Will. At your convenience, of course.

I have had quite a journey with the G2 and Leicas. I first got a Minolta CLE and then later a G2 and then finally bought an M4. As soon as I started using the true Leica body, I was converted. I found that I used the G2 and CLE for photoshoots and such, they are much easier to just point and shoot; but the joy of shooting the Leica was on another level. I mostly used the Leica for pleasure shooting.
As time goes on these cameras break. My Leica ended up having a problem with the winder and didn't work, so I put it away and stored it and used the CLE. Then something on the CLE broke and I used the G2, but I then fixed my Leica. Now I have sold my CLE broken body and the G2 and bought another back up M2 body and a new Leica lens. I think my decision was the right one for me now. The G2 is easy, nice, and good for certain things; but the Leica bodies (even the meterless ones) are so much more of a joy to use. I like what you said about learning to use it and such.

Phew I’m jealous man, it’s really terrible Cus part of me wanted to not be into the m6 since it is such a hyped camera but it really is marvelous. If I were ever to get into Leicas I think I’d try hunt down an m4-p or something since I don’t really need a built in meter and that’s closer to being vaguely feasible budget wise for me lol. I definitely reckon if you’ve got an m6 stick with it, especially since you’ll be able to run it for the rest of your days whereas that’s not particularly likely with a the G2 😞

Both of these are definitely leaning more into the heirloom camera price point hey, just a shame that the g2 isn’t really going to be an heirloom since it’s gonna die at some point. I fortunately managed to get mine for next to nothing compared to what they go for now since I got interested in them at a good time and found a deal, but there’s no way I could justify owning and using either the way I like to use cameras out and about haha! The cost of repair is indeed not even worth mentioning 😖 but at least with the leica it will continue to be an option, as opposed to the g2 which is facing imminent irreparability

@@willysheepskin Having spent the last 35+ years repairing and restoring analogue film cameras and lenses, the repairing of my film cameras is not a big concern, unless we're talking about the electronics of a modern analogue film camera. And the number one issue with those delicate PCB electronics is corrosion due to 'Sodium Chloride - NaCl' in the vapour of saltwater air. It's not the saltwater itself that is dangerous to the equipment you use, it's the invisible saltwater air you can't see, that creeps into and onto the sensitive electronic PCB's. NaCl is attracted chemically to Solder that is attached to copper. Once inside the camera, it begins the process of altering the copper sitting under the solder first turning the copper black, and the solder a bluish-green. The result is the polarization of the copper preventing it from properly directing electrical current, then allowing dendrite growth on surface of the solder (green-blue calcification and white sodium scaling) making the PCB inert and unable to function - or in layman's terms, bricking your camera.
