But I have followed successfully my scientific projects ALONE and have published my papers in good journals without collaborators and out of the main streams of Physics in mostly of my papers . "People high in agreeableness do well in academia"
    That's a devastating indictment, because that is the exact opposite personality of a true innovator.

    Great discussion Jon, I agree with everything you and Sabine said. I think is important for new students to recognize this side of academia before committing to a masters or a PhD. My views have also changed throughout my PhD, and now I think of academia more as a business where scientific production and getting grants is the main objective. I try to work towards that while also remaining ethical and trying to establish good collaborations.

      Also, well summarized by you: have your expectations in the right place, so you don’t get traumatized when you enter the system.

      I agree with almost everything except the part that is a business where scientific production and grants are the main objective. I do not agree with this point of view. During my time in academia I saw a mass production of very low quality science, in many cases its literaly pseudoscience. Good science takes a lot of time and criativity. I would argue that the main purpose is the mass production of research papers, whether its good or bad science it doesnt matter. There is a big incentive to fraud and bad science.

      Schau hier um zu sehen wo er die Idee mit dem Anfangszitat her hat. Der Witz ist, dass Sabine sich über den Institutsleiter beklagt, der die Ideen für Textbücher von den Doktoranden erpresst/stiehlt. Er gibt sich hier mitfühlend, dabei macht er genau dasselbe. Oder warum ist der zeitliche Ablauf genau so wie im Sabine Video außer bei der Anfangssequenz?

    In principle I agree with Sabine, only what would be the alternative? There are many things wrong with academia, but we must always remember that in the end it is the only entity capable of doing research independently (this is not always true of research done by private companies). So young researchers must change the system from within, not destroy it, because the alternative is much worse than academia.

    • @whitemakesright2177
      @whitemakesright2177 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Well, look at the track record. Fundamental science has stagnated for 50+ years. The only advancements happening are incremental improvements in engineering, which mostly happen outside of academia anyway, either in government or private labs. You're also extremely naive if you think research in academia is independent.

    • @HumanPP

      @@whitemakesright2177 With regard to medical research and drug testing, would you trust the judgment of a private company or an independent public body more to validate the results?

      "...young researchers must change the system from within..." -- yes exactly, and I´m sure Sabine agrees with that💯. She wrote a fabulous book, titeled "Lost in Math", whose agenda is exactly this and makes a bunch of proposals to make things better. It was published in 2018. Unfortunately it seems, not many people read it, and since that, the scientific establishment tries to silence her, kinda scientific inquisition. I have a lot of understanding for her anger.

      @HumanPP 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@Thomas-gk42 I also bought that book and found it enlightening. What I mean to say is be careful about destroying everything without a serious alternative, because then we end up with the NO-Science people running the show.

    No, Jon, getting paid to do what you love is how knowledge and humanity progresses and this should be your job in academia. You cannot and you should not compare it to monetising a hobby. Sabina describes a paper-mill toxic research environment where nothing new or innovative is ever produced, as in many cases current projects that get funded are based on flawed fundamental basic principles.

      She profoundly influenced the developement of different fields of physics. Everywhere she has worked, she helped to create new ideas and left a theoretical framework that others minded for years. Sir Roger Penrose, Frank Wilcek and Steven Weinberg gave her interviews that are published in her books. In a recent interview, Lee Smolin named her as his most important idea giver. Though not anymore payed in academia, she published two scientific papers this year.
