I'm from Spain, Valencians didn't receive any warning from the authorities but the Valencia government knew this since 8.00 am. People were carrying on with their lives as usual, so.... many people died because they were on the streets, in basements, parking lots, shopping, in their cars, even people who were in their houses in the ground floor died, like those two little boys. So, the warning could have saved so many lives. I believe there are hundreds of dead people, they have just started to dig up in the mud or take the water out of the basements and parking lots.
It's truly heartbreaking to watch what is happening and to feel so powerless to help. I can understand why there is such anger in the regions affected, they should have had warnings, there should be an emergency plan in place to give people shelter if their homes have been destroyed - I saw a woman carrying her baby on our news broadcast who days after the flood said she had nowhere safe to put her child down. It's easy to criticise when you are not the person having to co-ordinate a rescue and cleanup, but it has looked like chaos to the rest of the world. The only hopeful part has been the army of volunteers arriving to help where the authorities appear to have failed. Community is a wonderful thing. I don't know how things work in Spain, but I hope there will be a review of what happened in order to prevent the lack of response to a disaster being so alow and inefficient, again.
People are very angry because they were abandoned for 4 days. Nobody went there, no army, no firefighters, no policemen, nobody... they called their numbers and nobody picked up these calls. The people from nearby areas had to walk for 10 km to get there and help, but that didn't happen right after the disaster. So imagine the situation, how distressed these locals were during those days, they lost their housing, businesses, family members, friends and so and nobody was sent to help. Neighbours started to arrive three days later because they had been abandoned to their fate. Unbelivable. Some people need to be held accountable for this. Starting with the Valencian government since it was their responsability to assess the situation and ask the government in Madrid for the resources they needed. They didn't move a finger, but neither the presidentn or the king, because according to them, it's not their responsability. So, if the Valencian government is truly incompetent, do we leave those people die therer and that's that??. I'm angry myself.
Did anyone from the government give any logical explanation why they failed to warn people in time (probably naive question) or they try to cover it up? And will those in Valencia, who were affected, try to sue them for compensation? They can't let it go just like that. There must be at least some compensation, even though it wont return the damage which was done and lives which were lost.
Como española. Muchas gracias. Muchas tristeza por esas pérdidas humanas, y por quiénes han perdido hasta su casa. Me siento orgullosa de tanta gente que está ayudando, en especial jóvenes.
I live in Houston the weather is crazy! I have a friend who lives about 30 minutes away, she called me to warn me about the Derecho that hit us, it gave us time to move our cars and warn my son. The storm hit like a Cat 1. You must stay vigilant especially these days. Right now we are watching a hurricane in November!

Yes, the city of Valencia wasn't hit by the flash floods at all (just one neighborhood far from the city center) but its nearby southern satellite towns (and other towns further inland)
We are deeply saddened by the devastating floods in Valencia. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this tragedy. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and offer our thoughts and prayers to everyone facing hardships and loss. In these difficult times, may you find strength in the support of your community and resilience within. We stand in solidarity with Valencia, hoping for swift recovery and healing for all.
The thing is red alert warning was issued for Barcelona ahead of heavy rain. I would not park my car in an Underground carpark when a red alert for heavy rain is issued..
Red alerts don't reach everyone as you have to follow certain accounts or check the news constantly. That's why there is a civil protection alert pushed onto phones in danger. However, this must be triggered manually by the authorities and that happened, in Valencia, way too late. Plus, it was not raining heavy in Valencia to begin with, but in the mountains in the back. That is where the flash floods came from.
My son lives in Barcelona and he said you couldn’t have missed the warning because everyone’s mobile in the streets went off so loudly at the same same time so you couldn’t have missed it even if you didn’t have a mobile with you.
Really hoping for serious tree-planting projects to be implemented worldwide. Trees not only absorb flood waters but they also absorb greenhouse gasses which is the cause of global warming/climate change. Deforestation is one main reason for these extreme weather patterns. We should also continue to transition more to using green energy.
Thank you from a Spanish person right here. Thank you for caring and share this. We are trully thankfull with all the support we are getting. Love yall! ❤
I live in Malaga, and I saw warnings about 24 hours before the maximum storm activity. It's not true people didn't know. What nobody knew was how ferocious it would be. The land is dry after too many years of too little rain. The weather was terrible, rain like I've never seen before (and it's a phenomenon here in autumn), thunderstorms like you couldn't imagine, biblical proportions. It's simply a cruel configuration of events and behaviours, a tragedy of unbelievable proportions, nobody is to blame. Even if one or two things had been done differently, it would still have been a catastrophic event.
It happened on the wrong place unfortunately. Central Spain is like a desert. With the land cracked open, no trees, intense dry heat. Raining 2 times a year for several minutes. This rain is urgently needed there but it hit the coasts. Such bad luck.

PM sent UME (emergency military units) 20 minutes after the disaster. Also hundreds of Civil Guards and Fire dept were sent that awful first night. It’s a very small response. But roads and streets were blocked with thousands of cars and mud. And emergency units had a lot of problems to reach inside cities and towns. That situation lasted the fist days because the National help spent many hours to unblock roads and streets to reach helpless population. That’s the reason of the anger of people and the feeling of abandone. Also the huge size of the devasted area made extremly dificult to assist so many people (800.000) in two days. Obviously thousands of volunteers reach the area much easier since they could jump and walk through blocked streets where emergency cars and trucks couldn’t enter. No country is ready for that. Even though 2000 military units plus other 2000 civil guards and fire staff from the Nation is very little help for the fist days it’s untrue to say ‘nobody arrived’ the first days. Helicopter rescue were helping since the begining as well. The third day comunication roads were begining to be cleared and a lot more troops were sent (5.000 more). Actually navy big ships, helicopters, 15.000 military staff, 10.000 police and civil guards, medical assistance, subaquatic teams and all kind of tecnical workers to restore railways, roads, elctricity, internet, or water infraestructures are already working on the vast damaged zone. Goverment money assistence to civilians is already on the go. It will take months and probably years to reach previous situation but general conditions get a bit better everyday. At least dead and missing people don’t increase much in the last days. Very sad and dramatic anyway.

It still boggles my mind that people were not given warnings on TV, on the radio and directly on their phones to go to higher grounds. This is a catastrophic failure. Hundreds of lives could have been saved.
Right. You're the first one I've heard holding the media to account. Unfortunately, media all over the world are no longer journalists or reporters, but just good-looking people who can read a script written by somebody who doesn't know how to do their job, apparently.
There was very bad communication between the differnt governmental agencies, some of them depending on the regional government and others on the Spanish government (both run by opposing parties). It also didn't help that the worst situation happened in a matter of minutes and that level of massive hearvy rain wasn't forecasted by the weather agency. It was originally considered like just another heavy rain, which are very common in that area (especially at this time of the year).
It doesn’t matter how many warnings for bad weather are issued, you can’t always escape from the area. Weather happens fast. Some warning lead to panic which can be worse than the weather issue. RIP to those that passed.
You're absolutely right. In fact, in some of the most affected towns it didn't even rain that much (in some it didn't even rain at all). It was this massive flood coming down on them in just a matter of minutes! No citizen expects the situation to develop in such way.
This can happen anywhere in the world but .. the Spanish opened there hearts to the English be it Benidorm or any where in Spain dig deep and help ! Heartbreaking to all
The positive thing that always happens in the middle of a bad situation is the solidarity of all the Spaniards. That makes me proud of being Spanish. People help the people. The politicians got a country and an autonomous community they don't deserve. It's so unfair that the warning arrived that late when the first floods started, and the people in the towns down the rivers were doing their usual stuff because everything seemed to be normal, and they were trapped in front of a tsunami. But then, the help arrived days after because of bureaucracy. Our firemen, the Army, the police from other regions... all wanted to help, but they couldn't without an official order, which no one knows if it corresponds first to the central government or to the Valencian government (regional). And then the streets full of mud, cars, rubbish, ruins, broken bridges, no water supply, no connections, no pharmacies open (all destroyed) and more than 220 deaths.
In this case, warnings did not help due to the sheare force of the huge amount of water. When you see what the water took along,... lorries, cars, entire houses... no one could get up against that. It is sad, but true. Devastating power of nature man can not compete with..... This not a government mistake, but the worldwide neglect of global warming whish is not taken serious at all by most countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea and worldwide. It is time that the greed of the industry to get richer and richer, and the greed of the buyers to allways get more and more but for less and less cost stops, and people and governments will start to put priorities straight.
The disaster itself is not that much of a government mistake (though it could've been managed better), but the aftermath definitely is.We have the Spanish government doing the bare minimum during the first 5 crucial days, leaving all the issue on the shoulders of the regional government of Valencia (which is run by their opposing party). They should've stepped in on day one of this disaster that had already taken the lives of 50+ people by then, yet the Prime Minister preferred to pretend it wasn't their call (as if a regional government had more power than a national one...). It's all a political vendetta using the suffering of the people, a vendetta that seeks to claim how badly the regional government (and thus the opposition party) has done. Ridiculous and disgusting.
Any governments around the world are being blamed for the many casualties however, Isn't the previous governments are to be blamed for not planning ahead??? And so, no matter how we change those seating in the govt, nobody as in NOBODY could ever prevent Climate Change...We are all vulnerable. My sincerest condolences for the loss...😢
Yes the Western Mediterranean actually reached 30 centigrade this summer and by late October it hadn’t cooled enough to minimise the risk of catastrophic rains fuelled by low pressure and warm seas ( for the same reason hurricane season is now 7 months instead of 5).

Hard to watch and my heart hurts for the people being affected everyday by these events. It's hard not feel heartbroken with the loss of our human family from wars, greed, and now this recent radical scaling up of ecological pulses. But I do think that we are all so unprepared because we've been lulled into commercialism while the systemic problems and our disconnection from nature have grown. Watch some Randall Carlson videos - I think the scale of our catastrophic events on our planet might give you an inkling of what you need to keep your mind and heart ready for. Love you all. Keep your humanity and your heart. No fear. The only way we can get through this is together.
Sorry to say , there is likely a storm like this coming to a location near you too. There is a reason James Hansen named the book "Storms of my Grandchildren ".
We had big flood in the Czech Republic this September, there was one week of preparation, many people evacuated. Protective walls built up, firemans operating in all the affected areas. 7 people who have died were just the one they did not fallow the instruction. This Is really bad.
The B.B.C. is always reporting in the frontlines ,as this is today in mediterranean Spain . You the journalists on the ground ,have to believe me when I recomend to listen to the people afected saying,," It is never too late, but as soon as posible, please".
Greetings from Valencia. The situation here and in the surrounding villages is terrifying. The media are not reporting the real number of victims (dead and injured) or missing. There has been a series of political negligences that have led to this disaster, including warning of the emergency when the water was up to our necks or had already swept away cars, people and everything else in its path. We ask you from outside Spain to spread the word so that it is known and reaches where it needs to go, because what reaches outside Valencia is not even a tenth of what is happening. Thank you very much in advance. Greetings to everyone.💖
[4:13] This rainfall claim is somewhat erroneous since Valencia has only 46 days of rain for an average year, which amounts to about two thirds of that which applies to the UK for a year. Without more accurate data with which to make any reliable forecast for a weather event, the Spanish authorities had little to go on, to provide any warning that would have not have alarmed the public. For climates such as the east of Spain, flash floods happen, and there was no infrastructure in place, to cope with such incidents.
What you expect from the BBC nowadays! Just blanket emotion and witless assertions. If you’re hoping for explanation or analysis you’re wasting your time. Frankly, this is just schadenfreud - it would be better if you don’t report it at all.
in the US they take any severe weather warnings seriously (or so i've heard) because its a regular occurence there in some states, they are well aware of the potentially catastrophic consequences. here in europe i dont think its the same, even if you get warned you never quite expect something like this and it catches you off guard. tropical storms have been spinning int he atlantic and swinging towards europe, they're not just a little rain. on the other hand poor from the govt.. but then again thats the usual, they always hide in their shells when there's a disaster, they're the real disaster in a way

When a storm this bad strikes..
You’re on your own🧐..
sad to hear that
It doesn’t matter how many warnings for bad weather are issued, you can’t always escape from the area. Weather happens fast. Some warning lead to panic which can be worse than the weather issue. RIP to those that passed.
That's one absurd comment 😏
You're absolutely right. In fact, in some of the most affected towns it didn't even rain that much (in some it didn't even rain at all). It was this massive flood coming down on them in just a matter of minutes! No citizen expects the situation to develop in such way.
Pray for spain😢❤
I am so sorry for your loss ❤😢
This is terrible and it's not clean water, either.
So so sad ☹️😢
This can happen anywhere in the world but .. the Spanish opened there hearts to the English be it Benidorm or any where in Spain dig deep and help ! Heartbreaking to all
Those are poor precious babies. RIP
The rain in Spain falls mainly from the planes 🤔
The white marks on cars mean it was checked, red / black marks with dates mean bodies were extracted 😢

Why isn’t Bbc watching Valencia
God bless 🙏🙏🙏
This was not a natural disaster.
Uuuuhhhh
😢 keepsafe all and.God.speed.to help everyone.
Thanks people for your prayers. We’ll raise again like we always did.
1 big hug :(
From Africa we pray for you to Lord to ha mercy on this difficult time
1962 vice president Lyndon Johnson, " He who controls the weather will control the world ".
Totally agree
Eres un bot verdad? Increíble
😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢😢God bless you all❤
I can just imagine if there were people in hospitals, too. Did they make it to safety?
Too much blame on the government. It was a very extreme weather event.
Any governments around the world are being blamed for the many casualties however, Isn't the previous governments are to be blamed for not planning ahead??? And so, no matter how we change those seating in the govt, nobody as in NOBODY could ever prevent Climate Change...We are all vulnerable. My sincerest condolences for the loss...😢
lol climate change! Are you kidding’
Yes the Western Mediterranean actually reached 30 centigrade this summer and by late October it hadn’t cooled enough to minimise the risk of catastrophic rains fuelled by low pressure and warm seas ( for the same reason hurricane season is now 7 months instead of 5).
@@gerardmackay8909that and the very obvious cloud seeding in the region. Spain was even complaining about it a few months prior
@@jeanhunt2215 Scientists have been predicting climate chaos from pumping gigatonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere since the 1980s.
Your ignorance won't save you. It's basic physics and chemistry ... and the earth doesn't care what you believe.
@@curiositycloset2359 Who is doing the cloud seeding? Mick Jagger? Biden? Putin? Pedro Sanchez? And why has it NEVER achieved results like this in the past?

I just hope that poor Dad who tied to keep his boys safe and they get washed away please tell him that is what has happened many times. It was not his fault
Deeply saddened💔Same happened in Kerala ,an entire village was wiped out. Babies affected by the flood was found in another distirct of Kerala. 💔
😢 such sad news.. RIP to all those that passed away! And condolences that have lost a loved one!! Thinking of you all in this difficult time
They can’t even predict what and Where and Volume of these Climate free fall Events now.
Budusaranai ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
Never rely on the government..first mistake!
الله اكبر 😢
The whole of Spain will be in fear of heavy rains and floods
do they finally have an official register for missed people?
GOD pleade help them to find the kids
Sorry to say , there is likely a storm like this coming to a location near you too. There is a reason James Hansen named the book "Storms of my Grandchildren ".
We had big flood in the Czech Republic this September, there was one week of preparation, many people evacuated. Protective walls built up, firemans operating in all the affected areas. 7 people who have died were just the one they did not fallow the instruction. This Is really bad.
God please help Spain - please Father God
The B.B.C. is always reporting in the frontlines ,as this is today in mediterranean Spain . You the journalists on the ground ,have to believe me when I recomend to listen to the people afected saying,," It is never too late, but as soon as posible, please".
how do they know they didn't receive a warning? Maybe they did, but they thought they would have time...
Idk, I'm really sorry 😢
God Have Mercy
Madrid has better location than Valencia and Barcelona?
They have destroyed more than 100 dams since 2021.
So awful.
Flooding is affecting voting here in the US.
This a regular occurence in Asian countries. We are so used to it.
Om Shanti 🙏

We never heard about Valencia city /Watching from Guwahati city in India / Mother Kamakhya temple city

What you expect from the BBC nowadays! Just blanket emotion and witless assertions. If you’re hoping for explanation or analysis you’re wasting your time. Frankly, this is just schadenfreud - it would be better if you don’t report it at all.
Haha what are you spewing?
Europa doe wat voor deze mensen🙌❤️🙌
in the US they take any severe weather warnings seriously (or so i've heard) because its a regular occurence there in some states, they are well aware of the potentially catastrophic consequences. here in europe i dont think its the same, even if you get warned you never quite expect something like this and it catches you off guard. tropical storms have been spinning int he atlantic and swinging towards europe, they're not just a little rain. on the other hand poor from the govt.. but then again thats the usual, they always hide in their shells when there's a disaster, they're the real disaster in a way
Bless these people. The earth is an angry mother. Stop harassing tourists and we’ll come and help you rebuild.
Are you for real what a disgusting comment 😡😡
