- Tubes, tubes, and more tubes! The Ampeg SVT-VR is a vintage reissue of an early 1970s "Blue-Line" SVT head. The preamp stage, power section, and even rocker switches emulate the exact signal path, tone, and vibe of the original rock 'n' roll workhorse. Authentic from its input jack all the way to its six 6550 output tubes, the SVT-VR is a must-have for rockers seeking that in-your-face Ampeg bass tone.

That Ampeg tone is iconic.
I had one of those with an 8x10 cabinet 30 years ago. Best rig I ever had.
I've always wanted to have a big Ampeg stack, but knowing me, it would never leave my house but there's no way I'm lugging it to gigs. Sick sounds!
I seen this new band not to long ago, there like hard rock, anyway the bass player had one of these with a big stack. My god was it LOUD!!! loved it
I just got one. It’s a pain to hull around but my god the grit is unreal. So gnarly!
@@Gubgubgoober over 80lbs that’s a no go for me . Weight matters
Weight matters
Also this amp made in China 🇨🇳. I have 2 Ampeg’s V4BH and SVT4 Pro …. The pro made in viet nam the V4BH is made in St Louis . The USA 🇺🇸 made amp has higher resale value !
“For rockers seeking that in-your-face ampeg bass tone”
*cuts to a guy playing slap on a trebled-out active bass*
And then that fanned fret guy... But the best part was when they got to the 14 year old girl playing a P Bass and I thought, "Finally", then noticed she was actually playing through a Fender Rumble behind her... Ahahaha!! --Wtf??
@@Therealchuckbailey dude chill
@@naturaljoe7397 my bad… I thought we were all having a bit of fun. You know… poking at the obvious kinda tongue in cheek humor. Was that not this?
@@Therealchuckbailey subtlety is what you lack
@@naturaljoe7397 subtlety wasn’t my intention. Even still my apologies and thanks for your comments and for watching!
*slams credit card on table*
I’ll never financially recover from this 🥴
P.S. seeing the Steve Harris p bass bring much joy to my heart! 🔥
I’m a guitarist, but always wanted to try bass, this video convinced me ,i recently got an SVT VR, with a 4x15 huge marshal cab i found for cheap locally,i LOVE IT!!! Now i play bass and guitar, and it’s challenging, each time i switch from bass to guitar ,everything seems easy ,and so soft ,it’s weird in a good way!!
What can be said? It's simply perfect!
Absolute beast of an amp. I got one of these, about 7 years ago, and it still amazes me how much power this monstrum brings to the table.
The only thing that might be a dealbreaker for some, I guess, is the absence of a Master-Volume. This amp is so loooouuuud! And you can hardly ever really push the tubes into break up without getting pulverized in the process. XD
@@SquareWaveSymphonies track down one of the 70’s V series amps. I have a 2 Channel V4 that sounds like an SVT at 100 watts.
I played bass for 45 Years, it was my favorite amp along with a jazz bass.
Great video. Lots of different basses and tonal demos. Best VR demo/review out there.
Gonna rewatch the CL demo then watch this to compare.
Would LOVE the 50th anniversary SVT demo for comparison purposes
Great video guys! Sunison (my dog) doesn't like how loud the amp is but man do I love it!
Still use this beast with 2 8x10s can’t beat the sound. Funny enough first one I bought back in late 70s I paid 600.00 for used head & cabinet mint condition. Had 3 at one time if I’d known how much they’d be worth now I’d never sold them. Used to run it same way patch cord between 2 channels.
What does patching the chord between channels actually do to the sound?
Awesome clip. Classic bass amp and retro arcade games at 2:08. It’s a winning combination. 😎🤘🏻🎸 I’m normally a gk and hartke kind of guy, but this amp sounds awesome. Really beefy and punchy.
Man, that sounds insanely good! Great review, boys!
Now I kinda want another Ampeg!
It's always been a nice series if you don't mind hauling it around
As a studio engineer - THIS is the amp that clients would bring in that gave the sounds that fit into the mixes better than ANY other amps.
(With those SWR demons coming in second.. but they were far more temperamental amps.)
Classic is the sound of Bass. VR is the sound of Ampeg bass. I find more versatility in the classic (especially having a gain/master). But if you want maximum Ampeg flavor, the VR got that extra shot of espresso in it.
If I were 30 years younger with a better back, I'd get one. Ampeg is the best!
I love you Chris for playin' 2 X 4 :DD One of my alltime favourite songs...
Nice rev. !!
Nice. Maybe next time i go on world tour lol. Til then, the Rocket will have to do.
Pls do a demo of the V4B!! I have the amp and would love to see this channels bass players demo it with their tasty chops.
It's an Ampeg SVT-VR 👍 Nuff said 😀
Never seen an Ampeg I didn't like! 😊👍
Cool sound)
This IS THE bass amp!....
Yep!
I do not know much on this amp, the warwick sounds just crazy on this amp
And bass for all)))
The trick is to run one channel straight , then jump the second channel to the boost box to overdrive it & have a blended 2 tone sound
Yo Will.....sick Eternals T-Shirt bro 🤘
I prefer the Classic over the VR for the simplicity, & the better sound in my opinion. A lot like the simplicity of the Orange Bass Amp. No frills nothing fancy just solid "tones" I grew up with. What's not to like? Priceless.........
Nothing sounds like an SVT.
would’ve loved to hear the ampeg cranked
for real
I'll never sell mine. It sits right next to the mini VR
Want one
This is a dream amp, but I didn't hear a Musicman Stingray. I was exercising while listening to this so I didn't actually see much of the video but I heard the whole thing and I didn't hear anything that sounded like a Stingray 🤔
85lbs=38kg! Have they put a concrete block inside so you can use it as a ship anchor after it breaks down beyond repair?
I bought a new SVT-VR. My dream amp in my old age, like I had in '71. It was a total Chinese circuit board POS. I sold it w/in 6mos to a preacher's kid.
So, it didn't at least sound the same or close? That would suck.
Never owned a real one, but the UAD sounds good to my ears. No cabs in my studio.
@@AudioJanitor Within one week the chinese SVT cooling fan began to squawk. I imagine Flea uses three SVT's since one or more is usually on the blink.
Doing homework, they do sell the USA made Heritage 50th SVT. 3K but worth it. But, my MTD has tapped me out of money for a while.
It's not just the 300w tube power, it's that SVT cab, four sealed chambers-you press one speaker in and the one beside it pushes out. This sealed enclosure configuration is half the SVT sound. Chiropractors love this cabinet.
Top review Man 👍👍
Used to laugh at folk complaining about weight of these. Used to take an 8x10 and a 4pro to pub gigs, no complaints. Then my back went doing kettlebell swings. Boogie no more indeed.
Is there much difference in the sound of the ampeg svt vr against the fender super bassman?
CL for me........at least judging from the samples you provide here, and the ability to dial the gain stage; the bridge option on the VR its quite appealing but the Rex Brown Holy grail tone print comes easily from the first sample of the CL review..... and I know the power tube stage and the cabinet blown cames along with it... but I have tried them both and the CL gives me the tone without goes Bananas with the overall volume level
do the Ampeg V4B and also with the Nobels ODR1 !! absolutely killer!!
A Maiden album would be awsome
This just is how bass has to sound for me.
I don’t know why Creeping death on the dingwall made me laugh.
Is anyone else confused by the fact that most of the player clips clearly show another rig entirely than the amp being featured and reviewed?
At the time we were making these vids, our 'reamping' solution was a bit less sophisticated and streamlined than it is now - in those clips, the signal was recorded dry via a WireTap pedal (out of frame) between the player and their (visible) amp rig, and then played back into our studio rig as it was recorded, so that original performance you see is being heard through the amp we are showcasing. Apologies for the confusion; we recognized that through several comments like yours and have changed it up quite a bit between then and now.
but can it do non midscooped sounds? 🥶
Can it be used with active basses? Is there a db pad?
could you give a little more depth to this third channel? i'm trying to achieve this with plugin alliances svt vr plug in
Why have the patch cable in the inputs?
It's a bridge between the two channels. Watch at 9:24
@@faded_giant I don't think it was ever made super clear what that does exactly. Like, what's the advantage to doing that?
@@ampthebassplayer Each channel has a slightly different EQ. Patching them essentially provides a blend or combination of each channel.
I had a b25 same input setup, I went straight into the second channed ran a cable to my pedal board and into the bright channel on channel one, basically like a bi amp setup with one amp
How are you using this amp with the players not in your studio who are clearly using other amps (Fender Rumble combo, Orange, SVT 3, Gallien Krueger, unknown amp on a darkened stage, etc)?
Probably reamping a line signal.
@@niklasingvarsson8166 That would be my assumption but it would be helpful to disclose that in advance.
They record all riffs direct with the WireTap Pedal and then can use it with any pedal or cabinet on the market.
We’ve made no secret about that in the past. At some point it just gets a little redundant. But yes, each player was recorded directly into a Tc Electronic WireTap (no preamps or compressors), then reamped into the SVT-VR. Any amps in the background were solely used for monitoring at the time of recording. Every single sound in this video came from the SVT-VR with the settings shown.
The VR is brighter but the CL sounds beefier. I think I still prefer the CL myself.
What Warwick bass is that?
Try the 50th anniversary heritage! and the V4B.
85 lbs!!! Who the F can carry that around on the regular. Sounds freaking great though, ha!
Review about Ampeg
*cuts to a guy playing Orange*
that woman was using a fender rumble, can clearly see it plugged in and turned on
They record the bass using a wire tap pedal then feed it into whatever amp they are demoing, probably used the fender as a monitor id imagine
Add at 5.33 that vr looks kind of Orange ?
Great amp, good luck finding someone to fix the thing though.. Apparently the circuit board is an absolute nightmare to service. Mine is a little over a decade old and began making a strange hum. After taking it to multiple reputable amp builders, and four weeks at an electronics shop, I was told “we’re going to refund your money and walk away from this”
Super lame.
1.05 That doesn't look like the VR in the back ground.
I've always hated Ampeg tube amps. The SVT3 Pro is decent when the gain is down.
but.. you never even turned the amp up...
That girl with the p bass was not playing through the amp
Honestly, I don’t see what the fuss is. It sounds good, but for the price, there are better options.
I miss the time when people on this channel were directly demoing the gear and actually tweaking the knobs for each demo. I understand what you want to do by using pre recorded loops of various artists into each gear you want to demo-> it brings high quality and diversity to the demo. But I really miss the authenticity of one person playing in front of the actual gear giving comment and tweaking it. I don't know it miss the authenticity it had before. Just my opinion
The funny thing is this method of demo actually answered a lot of the previous criticisms when we would do it more “authentically”. Including but not limited to, “It would have been nice to hear it with a ___ bass”, “You’re playing to the pedal too much. This isn’t what an actual bass player would play”, “Wish we could hear it in a mix”, and other various critiques about Will’s playing style. I don’t feel this method is any less authentic. I’ve always made sure the reamped signal level sent to the amp is identical to that of a bass plugged directly in so what you’re hearing is exactly what you would have heard of all these players would have been in the room. It’s just no longer a scheduling nightmare.
@@TheBassChannel People criticized that dudes playing style? I'm sorry, but WHAT. Everyone on this channel is phenomenal! I love everyones different styles and approaches
7.05 kind of looks Orange and GK
This kit has to be loud to drown out the damn fan....
That's $4200aud, 85pounds, made in china with a 1 year warranty.
It sounds good by itself but I find it doesn't play well with others.
Dude, I'm sorry, but what the heck is even going on in this video? A couple of the players are shown with Orange amps in the background, and in the clips of the girl with the P Bass and Jazz Bass, you can see a Fender Rumble with the lead plugged into it and the power light on, looking like that is what she playing into... ?
the signal is REAMPED.... what you are hearing is the unaffected signal sent to a wiretap and reamped through the SVT. I know its crazy but Technology is a wonderful thing.
Chuck Bailey I thought it might be reamping, but tell me, are you reamping the sound from video clips where the signal is actually from those other amps and then into the SVT, or were all those people DI’d and you’re using the pure bass guitar signals?
@@darwinsaye that’s what’s rad about the wire tap! It takes the signal and makes it unaffected so you get dry signal bass tone to utilize. In this instance we get to use those takes and revamp into the SVT. So while it looks like it’s X or Y amp or whatever that’s just the video footage. The signal is all Ampeg!
Yes, to iterate what Chuck said, all players are plugged directly into the WireTap pedal. No compressors, no preamps, etc. (except, of course, the onboard preamps that are in active basses). We then feed that sound into whatever gear we’re showcasing so it’s identical to the sound you’d be hearing if any given player were plugged directly into the amp.
Lol at guy 8 min in.
10.18 also seems suspect.
Seriously? Not one of those players were actually playing through the SVT-VR. Their sound bites, that were colored by different amps, were ran through the SVT-VR. What other EQ shenanigans are being done behind the scenes?
Actually, every single one of these playing examples utilizes nothing but the SVT-VR. Each player is recorded directly into a TC Electronic WireTap with no preamps or compressors. Just Bass straight to WireTap (which we use because not only is it mobile and convenient, but more importantly, there is no input gain controls so what you put in is exactly what you get out). The other amps you see in various backgrounds were solely used for monitoring at the time of recording. Now, I’m sure the big question is “Why?”. Obviously, not everyone plays the same and not everyone owns the same bass. Pre-recording different players with different basses allows you to get a thorough demonstration of the possible range of tones this amp offers without us having to pull our hair out over scheduling difficulties or spending tens of thousands of dollars to be able to include a wide variety of instruments in each video. Also, the SVT-VR (and CL for that matter) is one of the most revered amps of all time. Do you really think we’d go through the trouble of obtaining one only to pull some “EQ shenanigans” by running tones that were colored by a Fender Rumble? This amp needs no “EQ shenanigans” and therefore we didn’t give it any. The same goes for every other demo video we’ve done.
But it is still made in China. :(
