It's a medium ship so there's no comparison with the Cobra Mk 3 or 4. It's not replacing them, it doesn't make them obsolete. I think it's more likely to be a similar ship to the Python Mk 1 - a workhorse. As I've had more than 10,000 hours out of this game, I'm happy to buy every ship they release for ARX. They're only 1/5 the price of a new triple A game, and with all the new content being added to Elite, why do I need to buy any new release titles these days?
Indeed. Especially while there's an absolute lack of good new games. I haven't been interested in a new game for 2-3 years now. Starfield was a complete fail. Even if I play not Elite, I play games 4-5 years old at least. And Star Citizen becomes a complete shitshow as well.
There is a functional need for an SCO multi-role. Especially when doing Powerplay on medium landing pad only systems. Trying to force a Python MKII to take out 7 PP npcs alone AND doing search and rescue is rough. I do wish it was a differently designed ship.
I like the fact that they designed a new cockpit instead of again using an existing one, add a fighter bay and I'll be happy with it, also it looks a lot better than the good old iconic Cobra.
Fighter bay on a small ship? This thing is almost the size of a fighter itself.. The look is just personal taste, the Mk.III still looks so much better to me. This looks more modern though.
@Drax658 damn i must have missed that sorry. Kinda weird tbh. A bay is unlikely, but would be cool indeed. Edit: I've watched it again, damn he says medium so many times... what was i doing while watching this.. 😅☠️
@@Drax658 It's a medium, but on the smaller end of medium ships - physically, it's not much bigger than the mk3, which makes it very interesting to speculate about the internals.

Or if they were going to make it the year of Medium ships, make it something new like the Mandalay or Type 8. I'll probably still get one, but she'll probably end up being a Hangar Queen unless there's something really really special about her.

I have all the ships on my carrier and i often fly small ships like the cobra for pure fun. If the internals are right, it might also become interesting in pvp. I welcome any small or medium ship over any big hands down.
I absolutely despise the the Anaconda. It is an obese, unathletic whale. Nothing about is good. I've tried the shardaconda, the jumpaconda, and a few others. It is now a a storaconda because it is useless.
Looks awesome and ties in with the anniversary I suppose, but a Panther Clipper XL would have been a better Christmas present for me. Great design and I would expect the sound design will be exceptional as usual. New ships next year. I certainly hope so. I presume it will depend on if this new Arx model is working well enough for FDEV to continue to produce content at this level. This has been a great year for new stuff.
I was hoping for a first Guardian tech ship or a large one but hey we are getting new ships. Besides it is not impossible that there will be new ships next year. As players start to colonize star systems there will be a plenty of opportunities to add large ships.
If you weren't a backer this is the Cobra MK IV. So don't get hung up on the number. I think it looks great, and if it flies like a Mandalay then it will be a pleasure to use for errand running. I would like to see a large capacity medium pad Gutamaya design so you have something with the capacity about a L8 but faster and with some Imperial styling. Maybe a narrow Clipper. Perhaps put it in the Imperial power play rewards, indeed, nothing to stop faction specific ships. With the obvious effort being put into the cockpits and the ramps ( I walked up the ramp of my Mandalay last night., it was very good!), Fontier may be preparing the scenario for a change to how we enter and leave ships. My biggest gratitude is for the fact that they are still investing time in developing the game. The work that has gome into the L8 and the Mandalay is huge. It takes serious manhours to design something like this and make sure that all the internal bits are internal from every angle etc. That is an encouraging level of commitment.
This looks like it might be the best cockpit view in the game. It will be an SCO safe python mkI. We don't need anything, want though. Yes please, not disappointed in the least. Have already reloaded my ARX in anticipation of this.
I'm not disappointed in the slightest Ricardo- I love the look of it, the Viper was always a good looking ship, tipping a design nod to it in the new Cobra is a neat touch. I'm sure the design of the ship, in terms of modules and hardpoints, will be just fine. It's an all rounder, it'd be hard to mess that up too badly. Whether new players will want it? Who knows? Maybe it'll be better than other medium ships, maybe not. But I'm absolutely convinced old players will be queuing up to throw money at Frontier- the salt still flying about the MK IV should tell you everything you need to know about the desire to acquire pretend spaceships in our community. I'll be buying mine as soon as it goes on sale. What's a few arx between friends?
I'm in awe! I hope it will look exactly as the concept! Just as I thought I found my ship with the Mandalay, this awesome things gets announced! The thing is, the Phyton mk. 2 has it's weird plating coloring different from the concept, the T8 back looks rushed, it has like 99% less detailing and the nacelles attachment is just wrong, and the Mandalays underbelly looks a bit out of place (it's a minor issue and at least somewhat grew on me). So I really hope they will stay true to this design, if so, I will buy one with ARX.
It make sense that DeLacy would launch an SCO stable Cobra as it is their flagship model. The real surprise is that all the SCO stable ships are medium size. Either a big one or a small (this is where I'd put a new cobra) should have been next. I do love the cockpit though
When I first saw it, I commented that it looked like a Cobra and Viper had had a baby. I was disappointed that it was a medium. I had been asking for a large small King Cobra, an SCO-native Odyssey focused Cobra with 4 seats.
I think the question is less "do we need another Cobra?" and more "do we need another Falcon Delacy or Lakon spaceways ship?". The number of falcon and lakon ships in game far exceeds the other manufacturers. A big chunk of that popularity is their jump ranges and optional slots, and as the Mandaley proves, people will buy ships from other manufacturers if they have decent specs. Let's give the other ship makers (those with good cable management and that didn't get their interior decoration skills from a warehouse) some time to shine. A medium Gutamaya or Saud Kruger ship, or a large Zorgon (I.e. Panther Clipper) would be well received, I feel. Heck, while we're at it, maybe see if Ram Ta can make a small hybrid ship for general use.
I was disappointed with the Python mk2 because it looks like a Python with a ship kit. I still don't get the concept behind the thing with the additional large hardpoint yet a smaller power distributor. It still makes no sense to me. Only certain builds work on it. Internal space is painfully limited. IN A PYTHON. I hate it. But this, I like. I dig the design. It doesn't look like a Cobra with a ship kit. It's something altogether else. Yet still familiar. It looks like a chunky Viper from the front/top but like a Cobra from any sideways 45° angle. I love it.
Python mk2 is more of a pure PvE / PvP combat ship than a multi role. Treat it like an FDL but with a quirky distro and PP, kind of like a Vulture. The right engineering unlocks them both, with the right loadout, but multirole isnt really its wheelhouse. PvE , PvP and Anti Xeno combat is.
I own a cobra 4 and we definitely need a mk 5. I wouldnt even mind opening up access of the cobra 4 for everyone. But the 5 will hopefully fill the void. and i love the look of this. Might take over as my explorer over my FDL.
I would like to see frontier do something special with this - as you point out, the concept art does indeed have a strong "stealth" vibe to it - and shieldless, low sig, hull tanks were always a nearly unfeasible niché - maybe frontier can make this work with this ship. Unlike a Diamondback, it could have enough internals to really tank, increadibly low sensor signature and heat-buildup - and the ship might just work for sneaking through enemy territory, undetected, be it for cargo smuggling, the new powerplay, or - with enough hardpoints to pack a decent punch - single-target assassinations
I'll definitly buy this. Not in arx but in game for sure. I want a bounty hunter superfast and maneuvrable ship. We need a new and bigger anaconda too... and new ships smaller than the Sidewinder and landable.
I like the look of it to be fair, but I will reserve judgement about how useful it will be until I know more. I really want it to be fast (really fast like the mk3 used to be before engineering and enhanced thrusters) and maneuverable with a unique hardpoint layout (4 large maybe). If it's in that ballpark while still having decent cargo and at least moderately good jump range, it will probably become my daily driver, but I'm expecting to be underwhelmed to be honest.
Was kind of expecting a big ship release. IDK why, my mind went, combat, cargo, exploration, then big ship. I guess Multi-role makes sense. Hopefully we will get more ships in 2025 (not that im complaining about what we do have, i love them). plus Cobra 5 is gorgeous
I like it. Honestly, always loved the Cobra for nostalgic reasons. But it's not viable as a main ship anymore (that's now my Krait). So love the idea of being able to have a Cobra as main allrounder again. I just hope they make it less Viper-ish looking and more Cobra, really! (New Large ship & Panther are for next year then 😜)
I'm happy with it. ED is a funny beast; after thousands of hours of grinding, making credits, getting rank for the biggest ships; my favorite ships are still the smaller ones, like the OG Cobra Mk3. After the disappointment of the MK4, I'm all for the MK5.
The more I think about it the more I like the idea. A new ship to sort of fill the gap between the python & Krait Mk2 that could give us some new options for multi role with SCO performance updates. I actually sort of dig it if it has the right internals to support a meaningful multi role experience and I agree it needs some large hard points. We'll have to wait and see...
I was hoping we get a large size Combat ship to really rival the corvette, with two C4 hardpoints. I have been using my Type-10 Defender as my exploration vessel for years now, I can carry so much stuff. I will buy the Mandalay once its ingame to buy, people have got over 91ly jump range with the mandalay. Sure my type 10 only has 37ly but I love that brick. I like the concept of the Cobra MK.5 but i will buy it and add it to the list of the ships I never fly. Once its available to buy with credits. Not real money
3:20 - That's what I dislike about it, the centre pilot seating. I love the side by side seating in the MK III and the Python as, at least in VR, it feels like you're flying an actual working spacecraft, rather than yet another oversized fighter.
I think it's gorgeous. I was excited when the Mandalay came along and I'm having a lot of fun with it but, it hasn't really scratched the my mutli-role itch. Now, depending on it specs, the MK5 could be it for me. I'd even sacrifice some jump distance for heavier weapon loadout. New cockpit and the transparent floor are a welcome touch too. With it being a 3 seater, I'm hoping it has the module space and versatility of the Krait II. Waffle over.. Can't wait...
Just waiting for a ship that finally beats the Cutter in terms of cargo space, I expected the Cutter Mark 2 by September 2024. We could be waiting for another year.
The Mini came out in 1959 and was stopped being made in 2000 without changing that much, in 2005 BMW made a car called a MINI and everyone hated it because it wasnt a "MINI" but it grew on people and is very popular now. Lets see what happens with the Cobra MkV.
Yes, we need another Cobra, and regardless of jumprange, ill be driving it rather than the Mandalay. And all im going to do with it is exploration and exobiology.
It doesn't need to be astounding. It just needs to be an option, at least for me. The goal shouldn't be to make another ship obsolete. Even if it isn't the meta for a particular activity it's nice to fly something different and try to make it fit a role. If each ship had five or so other ships with almost identical stats but different aesthetics and hardpoint placements that would still be a win. Just give me options!
full open cockpit, thank you fdev, now wheres the slm(miner), mobile suit for planetary everything(with customization and engineering, gundam inspired), medium gutamaya, L and M carriers(fits one ship size smaller than it, has alot of cargo, and a smallish reserve of refills for limpets/ammo, and a repair/refuel for mined materials, and a 150-200ly jump range, possibly the panther line of ships?)
I do like the look of the new cobra, the cockpit looks very nice. However, I miss my old panther clipper from the olden days. However I still fly my cobra 3 in this now, so I'll will be getting the v5.
I think you may be wrong. The Mandalay is a jumpy ship. This will be able to carry some cargo and and do some damage. I'm going to buy one. Not straight away but eventually.
I’m thinking that cobra 4 is basicly going to be an Sco version of the krait. Honestly, I’m intrigued but not enough for RL money. I will wait for general release this time. I was highly disappointed it wasn’t the panther Clipper
not disappointed per se, but a new large ship like a corvette or clipper/cutter or maybe a SCO anaconda? that would have been astounding, oh well maybe next year
I have pre bought all the new ones. Looks like i will be buying 3 of 4. I prolly won't even use in-game credits for this one. Wanted a large ship for the last one.
We have medium SCO combat, trade and exploration ships. Multirole was the only thing missing, so I'm all for this. Hopefully next year, they start on the small ships?
Excellent Sly little faux shilly but actually critically insightful video Sir Ric. For this commander Frontier embody risk adverse, Repetitive and derivative development; on foot gameplay was added and still managed to be more unsatisfying dopamine Grind. Sure I support the game because of the Stellar forge and 2500 hours in cockpit but even ship interiors can be a Fail if the same grindy, pointless game play is the end result. The game needs a sense of humour, mystery and wonder again. Guess I’ll have to start my own TH-cam channel to get this sort of discussion off my chest- while the real world burns of course hahahaha.
A) don’t fly a Cobra so Mk5 would need to be something awesome for me to switch B) I was hopeful for a MEDIUM Imperial ship, that’s very much needed. C) Imagine the Cobra Mk5 as a LARGE ship,,, that changes things A LOT
I'm basically just looking for what's effectively a vulture, but with four or five M hardpoints or something instead of just two L hardpoints. Or 3M and 3S? Idk. It isnt even a great idea to put a corrosive on a vulture.
My suspicion is that these ships are designed with layouts that will be needed in for future gameplay, maybe there is something that the cobra 5 or the python 2 or Mandy 1 can do, that is needed in the future background story, that the current ships fall short with.
to be honest, im a little bit disappointed as well. i was hoping for a ship which i had a use for.... panther clipper would have been better for me. allowing me to move large but slow amount of stuff between carrier and stations. i have no purpose or need for cobra 5, maybe it ends up with some special thermals we need for thargoid space..
Yes, we need another Cobra, Eagle and Viper and so on! The more the better! Cheers! P.S. I like this new Cobra - I think it will be a direct competitor to the Krait MK2.
Why couldn't they have just replaced the Cobra Mk4 design with the Cobra Mk5 design instead? I think players would prefer entirely new ship design types.
Would have preferred a new Vulture, but I'm looking forward to a new small ship. I think my big gripe is I I still feel like the evasive capabilities of small ships is lacking. I feel like when it comes gimbaled and turreted weapons there needs to be a degree of inherent jitter when targeting ships under a certain size...... Wait, is this a medium ship or a small?
Honestly? I used my Viper until jumping to the Vulture. I never seriously used either Cobras, and this is like the first new ship I'm just kinda meh about. It's going to need *something* to get me out of the door for it.
Maybe really good stealth properties i.e. thermal signature would be a good place for it for sneaking about doing PP2 missions and the like - that would give it some purpose and utility over other ships in-game.... 🤔
Not gonna lie, I was disappointed too. I was hoping the 4th ship would be a new top end ship. We have lots of new ships for early and mid game players, but I was hoping as a late game player that they'd give me somethin new too. The mandalay ended up being the only one of any use to me. But when you have a fed corvette, you don't have any need for a medium combat ship.
I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed. It’s just something I’m not interested in. But then again, I was just hoping for a Saud Kruger luxury ship so I’m definitely in the minority
C'mon Ric -- you know this won't be the end of the line. We're just getting started with this SCO-stuff --four will not be it. And do WE really have two Cobras? I don't. I only have access to the III. You might have the IV but I don't, so yeah -- that's another point. We didn't get a large ship. I'm sure they're aware. of that too. Face it: you'll own one and enjoy it.
I’d like to see the ability take existing ships in to their manufacturers home shipyard and pay to have it redesigned and upgraded to full SCO capability in addition to a general stat boost. I love the new ships but I don’t want the originals to become irrelevant.
Imagine rolling up to the manufacturer like, “Hey, can you make my old ship look like a shiny new model? I mean, who doesn’t want a turbo boost with a paint job?”
I was expecting a dedicated anti xeno ship especially because of the last community goal of Shinrarta Dezhra defense or at least a huge cargo ship, i don't think this ship will surpass my dedicated fighters
@@RicardosGaming You think they develop the game next year as much as this year? I mean they probably did make a lot of money but is it reinvested in Elite dangerous or do they keep it for other projects.

After the disappointment of the MK4, I'm all for the MK5.
new ship is a new ship
The more I think about it the more I like the idea. A new ship to sort of fill the gap between the python & Krait Mk2 that could give us some new options for multi role with SCO performance updates. I actually sort of dig it if it has the right internals to support a meaningful multi role experience and I agree it needs some large hard points. We'll have to wait and see...
big size increase from the original small cobra
I was hoping we get a large size
Combat ship to really rival the corvette, with two C4 hardpoints.
Yes we do! Stop moaning CMDR Ricardo! 😂
3:20 - That's what I dislike about it, the centre pilot seating. I love the side by side seating in the MK III and the Python as, at least in VR, it feels like you're flying an actual working spacecraft, rather than yet another oversized fighter.
2 large and 2 medium hard points would make it very attractive, with SCO and center seated medium multi-role.
@@jarekstorm6331 it’s got to have a compelling loadout
I need a hook tool to catch floating ships and I would use the cobra as a pirate ship...just listen FDEV!
This 100%. I've been requesting the same for years.
I would have liked to see a large Alliance ship to rival the Empire and Federation types.
This ship looks gorgeous though… let’s see what it’s good for, I’m hoping it will make a great miner or something.
full open cockpit, thank you fdev, now wheres the slm(miner), mobile suit for planetary everything(with customization and engineering, gundam inspired), medium gutamaya, L and M carriers(fits one ship size smaller than it, has alot of cargo, and a smallish reserve of refills for limpets/ammo, and a repair/refuel for mined materials, and a 150-200ly jump range, possibly the panther line of ships?)
I do like the look of the new cobra, the cockpit looks very nice. However, I miss my old panther clipper from the olden days. However I still fly my cobra 3 in this now, so I'll will be getting the v5.
I hoped for a Saud Kruger Medium.
This is nice though. More options is always good.
You sound like my wife;
"Do we really need a new car...?"
*SLAP*
"Yeah, we do"
Day one purchase for me! Don’t need it but I love it. No idea what I’ll do with it but I want it.
I think you may be wrong. The Mandalay is a jumpy ship. This will be able to carry some cargo and and do some damage. I'm going to buy one. Not straight away but eventually.
alway happy to entertain different points of view
I’m thinking that cobra 4 is basicly going to be an Sco version of the krait. Honestly, I’m intrigued but not enough for RL money. I will wait for general release this time.
I was highly disappointed it wasn’t the panther Clipper
@@Kellett781 I think,valot of people wanted a PC
here I was thinking there weren't supposed to be any other variants after the new Python.
not disappointed per se, but a new large ship like a corvette or clipper/cutter or maybe a SCO anaconda? that would have been astounding, oh well maybe next year
i was kinda hoping for a small pad ship when i heard cobra mk 5 but of corse its med pad
They could've just as easily called it a revamped Asp Scout and it would look the same
The more the merrier right I just hope they keep going 4 every year is a reasonable request
this year has been the year of the medium ships....
I have pre bought all the new ones. Looks like i will be buying 3 of 4. I prolly won't even use in-game credits for this one. Wanted a large ship for the last one.
I wanted a large ship too
The Cobra is my hot rod. A faster, bigger, more powerful Cobra is certainly welcome. I've skipped the new ships. I'm not going to skip the Cobra 5.
At frontier they know what we all want. But they give us something else 😂
maybe next year is the year of the big ships
If anything for a new variant, i'd want a Krait Mk3
A) don’t fly a Cobra so Mk5 would need to be something awesome for me to switch
B) I was hopeful for a MEDIUM Imperial ship, that’s very much needed.
Agreed!
Why couldn't they have just replaced the Cobra Mk4 design with the Cobra Mk5 design instead? I think players would prefer entirely new ship design types.
Part of me wants to be disappointed but I love the Cobras so bring it on
yes, most likely because Braben wants it XD cuz he always flies one
Would have preferred a new Vulture, but I'm looking forward to a new small ship. I think my big gripe is I I still feel like the evasive capabilities of small ships is lacking. I feel like when it comes gimbaled and turreted weapons there needs to be a degree of inherent jitter when targeting ships under a certain size......
Wait, is this a medium ship or a small?
this year has been the year of the medium ships....
The lower window is cool. I don't care if it is medium I still fly the MK3. Gonna fly this one too. The view upwards looks great as well.
wierd they did all 4 of the new ships as med.
i was hopeing for a small / large.
that said im kinda digging the mk5 cobra
I don’t think we need it but I want it.
You can never have enough cobra's
Not gonna lie, I was disappointed too. I was hoping the 4th ship would be a new top end ship. We have lots of new ships for early and mid game players, but I was hoping as a late game player that they'd give me somethin new too. The mandalay ended up being the only one of any use to me. But when you have a fed corvette, you don't have any need for a medium combat ship.
I was hoping for a Large ship. Something that could compete with the Type 10 defender. but more weapony lol
the moment that came out im covering it in packhounds lol
@@Filbo_Fraggins 🤣😂🤣😂
@@tinmanspartan7551 i do love packhound gunships
I wouldn’t say I’m disappointed. It’s just something I’m not interested in. But then again, I was just hoping for a Saud Kruger luxury ship so I’m definitely in the minority
C'mon Ric -- you know this won't be the end of the line. We're just getting started with this SCO-stuff --four will not be it.
And do WE really have two Cobras? I don't. I only have access to the III. You might have the IV but I don't, so yeah -- that's another point.
We didn't get a large ship. I'm sure they're aware. of that too. Face it: you'll own one and enjoy it.
@@Tamburello_1994 of course
what is the NEW FEATURE released in the ED update?
Im not disappointed i didnt even know there will be a 5th ship. But after 4 medium ships why not 1 large ??
I’d like to see the ability take existing ships in to their manufacturers home shipyard and pay to have it redesigned and upgraded to full SCO capability in addition to a general stat boost. I love the new ships but I don’t want the originals to become irrelevant.
Imagine rolling up to the manufacturer like, “Hey, can you make my old ship look like a shiny new model? I mean, who doesn’t want a turbo boost with a paint job?”
theres already enough
medium ships in game. give us the panther clipper or smth already, fdev
I was expecting a dedicated anti xeno ship especially because of the last community goal of Shinrarta Dezhra defense or at least a huge cargo ship, i don't think this ship will surpass my dedicated fighters
perhaps 4 large size ships would be cool. Maybe a guardian class ship
this year has been the year of the medium ships....
@@RicardosGaming You think they develop the game next year as much as this year? I mean they probably did make a lot of money but is it reinvested in Elite dangerous or do they keep it for other projects.
@@EclipsixGaming yeah I think so ....
Scaled stairways on medium / smaller ships..........hmmmm tackling the interior fitting of smaller ships first..........Fdev doesn't have to buy as much furniture......maybe!?
i am fine with a medium but it has to be in the lower weight class like the ASP line
needs guns - lots of guns
the best looking ship so far.
Hate looking at the Krait…thing. I would like this to be the only ship I use. So it needs to be purrfect, otherwise I have to go back Mk1 Python.
YES WE NEED!
No offence Ricardo, a lot of us only have one. I’ve been asking for the Mk4 to be release for other players for ages, I mean, I haven’t seen many commanders that actually like it so what harm would it do. Still, wouldn’t say no to a Mk5
