  • @Beni_777
    @Beni_777 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Hi Ivan!
    At the coding part, each octet or slot you were referring are actually just hexadecimal numbers for the binary digits, what you can edit. Each "slot" in the long code has 1 byte of space, that is 1111111 in binary or FF in hexadecimal. You can set each extra-option like heated mirrors and such with a single bit like 0 or 1, then it's convereted to a hexadecimal number, to fill the slot/ocetet in the long code. In this case it was 01011110 to 5E.
    Good video as always!

    • @thephantom1492
      @thephantom1492 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will also add that for binary to hex, split it in 2 groups of 4 bits.
      01011110 = 0101 1110
      Now, each position is worth: 8 4 2 1, so you have 4 and 1, that make 5
      And 8 4 2 = 14, for 10-15 you use letters, A B C D E F... 14 would therefore be E
      Which make 5E

    • @leonardodavinci303
      @leonardodavinci303 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Typically, each byte is 8 bits . you used 7 in the first example and 8 in the second. I know....but being a good programmer, or auto diagnostician, you have to be a bit obsessive compulsive OC.

    • @larrybe2900
      @larrybe2900 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    • @ecaparts

    How can something with that many circuits, modules, sensors, connections, etc... honestly be reliable? Simple (usually) equals reliable. That thing is a rolling bag of service calls! And if that isn't bad enough, the new Mustang Mach E has an extra mile of wire it doesn't need! The design trend nowadays is toward failure rather than reliablity! Great diag, Ivan! 👍

    Ivan I would like to make a request. You are a busy guy so this may be a bit much to ask. Would you consider doing a video on the Pico 4 channel (or some alternatives like you showed here) and the accessories that you find most useful. This could include the physical items you use with your scope as well as the best wiring diagrams be it Alldata or Mitchell. Many of us could save our cars from the junk yard as you do. Some people say a $4K scope is way over the small garage mechanic or the home mechanic. I would say if I can save a $40K to $70K car or truck from having to be purchased I have done my job. Also since many mechanics are parts changers some people could leverage this to a part time job. I am in Calif. so having my car towed to your house might be a tad pricey. Besides we have Gavin Newsom and he fixes everything. Thanks for your time.

    Those Number are hex numbers (Base 16). Long coding lets you turn on and off different options. Some of those might not be installed, but you'll find out when you play with it. Do record everything though. One possibility mentioned in another comment is that the module was coded wrong which made the module behave erratically (not going to sleep). Definitely play with it, but maybe on a Golf, or other model with modules that are more accessible. We have a 2017 Golf. I read up on it and got myself an ODBCII reader to play with it. And being in IT helps a lot.

    Cool! I have one of those tiny DM volt meter's too! Love it. OK... I have a 2004 V10 Touareg, 500K miles. Dreaded battery drain problem. Occurred at the same time my outside door lock. button stopped locking the car. I put a amp meter on the battery under the seat (which is easy to flip up the seat). And traced the power usage by pulling fuses and relays. Turned out to be a short in the driver side door handle outside button. It became corroded. So the car thought the button was being pushed all the time. Thus activating all the key-fob radios. 5 amp drain, 24 hours a day. Devours batteries, kills the alternator. I peeled open the button, ripped out the surface mount switch and epoxy filled it. I get no thrill using that button.

    Just got my scope, neat little thing. 1 small issue to report that might help folks. I turned it on when i got it and it seemed to work just fine but the batt indicator said low batt. Next day I turned it on, plugged in the cable to charge it and the battery must have been too weak to power the device and it sorta crashed. I could see a (very faint) big battery sign on the screen with a thin red line showing it was low, but there was no response from any buttons, even a long or super long press of the power button. I took out the 4 screws on the back and unplugged the battery and it is now working just fine. I know nothing about scopes, thats why I bought this lil fella, cheap education :)

      I don't think knowing the ID of the module that is sending a particular network packet would help in a 1-off diagnosis like this one.
      After decoding the ID (priority), you would still have to figure out which device uses that ID.
      It's not like a home computer network, where each device has known MAC and IP addresses that you can look up in the device configuration.
      I do think that feature could be very useful when diagnosing more complex CAN problems or building / modifying CAN-enabled devices.

    • @GarnConstructionInc

    Great diag. Finally I get closer to seeing the difference between Coding and Programming on VAG vehicles. Coding is just a way of disabling or enabling options on modules (depending on trim level and model). It would appear that Programming goes beyond this to stuff like VIN registration,etc?

  • @Paolo0902
    @Paolo0902 ปีที่แล้ว

    The reason to put more modules into a car is that customer is forced to go back to the dealer network for diagnosis. You are lucky that you can replace the module. I believe in one of Alfa Romeo models (do not remember which one) Climatronic module can be programmed only once to the car. If fails need new one. That is very common in Europe, but I know is is coming to US also (Cadillac I think).

Nice job of testing and checking it. Awesome video!! Many thumbs up 👍 👌 i wonder if that scanner can make changes of the coding to add features to the vw? Curious to know if it can do it

  • @gazoline7093

    The long code is the same for all cars it is actually referred to as variant config. Basically if you on a can bus request to read a data identifier e.g A1. A1 on Holdens are the variant configs for the module the Module will respond with what it has in that memory location 2E,7F,5A,4R. Changing 7F to 3E will enable tpms or 2E to AA will enable hsv mode (NOT ACCURATE HEX VALUE FOR HOLDEN JUST EXAMPLE)

    Nice diag Ivan! It's crazy how complex modern cars are...one really has to wonder if all that complexity is really worth it though. The old VW in my garage has exactly 10 fuses total and zero modules...so easy and simple anybody can troubleshoot it. How times have changed.
