You’re the only person I’ve seen actually advocate for the bigger older style bezels 😱 but you make a really good point about being able to grip the iPad more naturally with thicker bezels. Makes total sense. Nicely done 👍🏼

Cheers, Ben. As I say, I do love the new mini from an aesthetic point of view. Just doesn’t quite fit in with how I use it (especially alongside my other devices)

@@IntentionalTech yeah the mini (I’m on it right now actually!) is kind of like a huge iPhone without the notch, FaceID, ProMotion, etc. I must say tho, it’s a really fun device. Idk how they packed more punch into the mini 6 and somehow made it even smaller and lighter than the 5. It’s a beautiful device, but definitely not for everybody.

I don’t see why everyone hates the bezels.
      They’re pretty nice.

I bought the iPad mini 6 and returned it- I agree the form factor isn’t for me. Also as a pilot, having the Touch ID button at the top was hard in the cockpit with my iPad on my leg.

I had a mini 6 for a month I liked the updated design and specs and louder speakers. I had it for a month before switching back to the mini 5.
Using it for split screen is a pain. As the lack of bezel makes it more sensitive in the screen area. So things would be constantly opening accidentally.
The form factor being smaller than the mini 5 the screen did not seem bigger at all. It was wonky to use because of where touch id has been put on the mini 6 at the top.
So I would register a bunch of fingers.
The most disappointing thing to me about the mini 6 is the battery.
It couldn’t get through a whole day. I would be struggling by hour 6 with low power on. To take notes. I would have to charge it twice a day. In standby I noticed it would be dead sometimes.
The mini 5 I only charge it 3-4 times a week. I use it for email, notes, music, facetime, education, word and 3-4 hours translates to about 35% of battery being used.
The mini 6 the same 3-4 hours would use about 65% of battery, that would be with low power mode enabled once it hit 80% after an hour. It was also brand new.
Hopefully the mini 7 will be better. It was a pain to pair an apple pencil with the mini 6 as well.

I have a 3 and 5yo. 5 has a cheaper Samsung tablet and 3 has a mini 2. I cannot stress how convenient that home button is! 5 used a freebie Samsung tablet when she was 2 that had a home button. When it died, there were no decent android tablets with a home button. She was 4 so adapted to no home button easily.
My 3 yo wants to use her sister’s tablet (she realizes our tablets work better than hers) and gets permission often. She brings it to me **everytime** she wants to exit a game, so every 30 seconds until she settles on one. I have the settings to always display the navigation bar but most games overwrite that.
Long tangent to say, buying used IPad Minis are well worth it for younger kids for the home button alone! Pair that with a super thick case and you should get at least a few years, if not several, out of it!

Thanks for sharing! The iPad mini is so good for my toddler too. Easy for him to handle and portable enough to placate him on a plane or train.
Another good aspect of the home button - If you haven’t used it already, there’s also an accessibility setting called ‘assistive touch’ that allows you to press the home button three times and lock the iPad into the current app. This is brilliant if you want to put a kids tv show on Netflix and then stop your toddler from doing anything else on the iPad while they’re holding it.

I upgraded from iPad mini 5 to 6 and regret it. If you don’t use the Apple Pencil 2, the old mini 5 is perfect for streaming and web browsing. The bezels are useful to hold the device

The Mini 5 still has a headphone jack which for my use case, running the Z CAM app, on set it can actually come in handy to listen to the scratch audio track better

I love the mini 5.. but i cruelly miss the usb c and capability to link a camera to it. Not only for data transfer, but for camera control eg monitor +. I also have the ipad pro and not a big fan of having the 2 apple pencils..
But i find the mini 5 smaller (i don’t like the bulky flat edges + camera does not protrude) and also a lot cheaper than the 6. Screen and performances are mostly the same.
No my only issue is usb c…

My first experience with an Apple product is buying an Ipad Mini 5 and its slipping off of my bed which is less than two feet off the ground and it cracking. I am not impressed with the build quality as I have an LG phone and tablet that has lasted over 4 years with no issues with multiple drops. I have another Mini 5 strictly because its the most convenient device for my DJI products. The screen is not nearly bright enough and I still don't trust the frame but beyond that its a good device.

Hows your mini 5 been holding up? I'm thinking of getting one. My main issue with it is watching videos, because of the screen's aspect ratio people say that it has big black bars when watching videos, are the bars that bad?

    • @IntentionalTech
      @IntentionalTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

If you’re watching TH-cam or anything in a 16:9 aspect ratio, the bars aren’t that noticeable. You’ll notice it loads more watching movies that are in wider aspect ratios originally for cinema.
Can’t say how that compares to the mini 6 but it’s actually a much bigger issue on my 12.9 inch MacBook Pro. The bars are huge on that for movies.

So that would be about $200 less than the mini 6, right? Without knowing you personally I wouldn’t want to say but maybe worth checking out the new version in store and judging whether the updated design features are worth that amount to you. It’s definitely a good price in its own right.
