    I’ve been searching for videos to see if it is ok to not have oil holes in the connecting rod/bearings. And then you said oil comes out of the crank shaft and oils the inside of the bearing. And it clicked in my head. Thank you. This video was super helpful

    If you Nick the Crankshaft with the rod bolt run a very small round file parallel with the rotation of the crank until
    the nick is gone then polish it, you will have a very small indentation, it will fill up with oil when engine is running and be fine......

    Great video. Recently my engine gave out and the mechanic said the needed parts where 2 connecting rods, gasket kit, crankshaft and oil pump.

    The tang is only for alignment not to keep it from spinning. That is done by the crush. The bearing when installed will stick out alitte on both ends. You must make sure they all stick out the same on both ends and both halves. When you tourqe down the caps it will crush the bearing against the journal.

    • @josaljo1
      @josaljo1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you check out vintage engine or obsolete engine parts you can often find .001, .002 undersized. Sometimes someone might have already done that and it's maybe a very good bottom end . Always polish the journals even if you reuse good bearings

    great video how ever that notch is just a locating tag to hold it in place when installing the bearings after that the torc on the bolts stops it from spinning hence having the correct torc when doing the conrod cap bolts

    • @peterstencell804
      @peterstencell804 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Go back to school. It's not a roller bearing in a 2 stroke . There is .002 thou clearance between the rod and the crank. And they do not touch. Grind them off and see them burn up. Put your money where your mouth is.

  • @kutlee2009

    That tab doesnt stop bearing from spinning. Its the bearing crush resulting from torquing the bolts, pushing the bearings pressing against the bore of the connecting rods that stops it from spinning.

    • @NickKautz
      @NickKautz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep , damn near all spun bearings are a result of it not being held in place firmly enough. If it were fixed in place and the journal makes contact , instead of knocking it loose it would "self-clearance" and probably not hit anymore, at the cost of a few psi of oil pressure instead of another motor.

    • @josepeixoto3384
      @josepeixoto3384 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is correct; the tab just *locates* the shell ; there are PLENTY of engines (i´m in portugal,europe) with NO tabs in the bearing shells.

    • @WizzRacing
      @WizzRacing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly right..That is they a new bearing will stick up just a tad. On each half..These need to be aligned right on both halves. So that when you toque them down. Each half will push each other. As they form....

    • @josaljo1
      @josaljo1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I hate to ruin your day, but you will need a new crankshaft or have the journal giving you trouble ground round again. You may be able to match a new bearing to it, as is, but it wont last. The knocking means out of round.

    when I replace a bearing do i grease the front the touches the crankshaft? I'm assuming the back stays dry?

    • @josaljo1
      @josaljo1  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Collective Consciousness Put assembly lube on the faces that face away from the block. In other words where the crank sits and the outside of the thrust face.. yes the back stays dry.

      +Josaljo Won It was my first time doing this so I'm learning as I go. Need to torque bolts and tighten in a certain sequence etc...... I only had a problem with one piston with both bearings totally disintegrating into my oil pan causing the rod to knock. I was low on oil and caught it quick. My crankshaft seems to be OK as far as I can tell to the touch. So I replaced the two bearings on the one piston should i grease the face of both of those bearings?

    • @josaljo1
      @josaljo1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Touch is not good enough, use plastigage to check the clearances and a micrometer to measure the journal, if the journal is out of round it will start to hammer no matter how many new parts you put in it.

    • @FISHERMAN331977
