Grisha’s VA sent chills through my spine this episode..He knocked it out of the park! Seeing Zeke go through this just shows you the depth of character development AOT continues to show time & time again. This was such an emotional episode seeing the relationship of Zeke & his parents..truly saddening.. also with Ksaver telling Zeke to find that someone and that “someone” ending being his own brother..incredible man
I've always been adamant that a properly done adaptation can elevate a story beyond the source material, and this episode absolutely nailed Zeke's character in all its tragic glory

You see this is why I argue with people that the dub just ruins everything about AOT for me.. The original Japanese VAs did such an amazing job.. you could actually feel the desperation Grisha felt the agony Zeke felt when hearing his father say shit like that
I like that they did not portray Grisha as being like, abusive so directly. He was not physically abusive, and he even acted in ways that he might of thought of as being "nice" like talking to Zeke telling him he can be a Warrior. But it was still just so much psychological pressure for Zeke that it got to him.
@Lilithan Chrispiford the 4th Yeah, I feel like some people forget that Grisha did acknowledge that he fucked up with Zeke, I think the line was something like "I had seen him as a hope for the future, but had I ever seen him as my son?" or something like that. He acknowledged that he screwed up, and while that doesn't excuse his actions, I do think people are a bit too hard on Grisha still, like Jake Retake calling him a bitch and saying he deserved to get eaten.

Grisha's VA sending us that PTSD of never living up to our parent's expectations. In all seriousness, this episode portrays the dangers of putting our beliefs into our own kids and expecting them to follow. I'm sure we all thought of this. We inherently want our future kids to follow in our footsteps, but is that really for their own sake or just to satisfy our ego. Getting compliments such as "just like your father..." is really detrimental. Instead, it's better to say "be the best version of yourself".
Some parents also compare their children to other children, This episode successfully send a PTSD of me too getting yelled at by my parents for doing a mistake in a test

everyone’s reason for empathizing with zeke is “he’s just a kid and they put too much on him” but yet no one can empathize with gabi although she’s also just a kid who was brainwashed as well.
Well the difference is that he was never seen as competent even by his parents he had such a low support system that the only person he had was Xavier? ( beast titan) who was willing to get close to him and see the positive traits in him like zeke being good at baseball ( an individual and a kid) not to mention he tries to protect him by telling him to snitch on his parents or else him and his grand parents get sent to paradis . Remember while gabi had her friends and was seen as an honorary marleyan warrior she was also indoctrinated only into the Marley propaganda while zeke had the internal conflict with his grand parents being pro Marley and his parent being anti Marley that enough is gonna be so complex for a child to understand what is right, what is wrong and what is the truth. He did not have a place to belong and was forced to make a hard decision with trying to protect himself and his grandparents from being sent to paradis. Everyone in gabis family was pro Marley in comparison to zekes family. He was never close with his parents since instead of trying to raise him they were trying to find freedom for eldians ( I mean I agree with fighting for the right to exist and not be seen as devil people) in order to revolt against marleys and were pressuring him with the responsibility being an asset of the restorationist. He was treated like a pawn or a weapon by his parents ( I mean either way he was a pawn for marleys too when he inherits the beast titan ).Zeke cared for his family that’s why he tried to warn his parents to stop the resistance or they would get caught. If zeke didn’t snitch he would have been sent to paradis too. It’s heartbreaking to know your own parents will use you as a tool for an ideology. Unfortunately in comparison to gabi he had to make the worst decisions for survival and had a lot of setbacks in childhood compared to her. That being said when gabi started she was 2 dimensional as a character so you are gonna have to expect development later. An odd way is that gabi is lucky being spoon fed propaganda because for eldians living in Marley any knowledge or threat to marleyan authority would result in an eldian being killed. I’m surprised zeke was still able to keep that knowledge of the resistance under cover as a kid up until he snitched.
@@amethysting3389 I don’t think Zeke necessarily made that decision of betraying his parents out of survival but rather out of resentment. I think it was a case of he needed an excuse to betray them but it really boils down to hate for him. I think if Zeke betrayed his parents because he wanted to survive, then he wouldn’t have dared to become a pawn for marley. That’s my perspective. I think he would have wholeheartedly supported his father and mother if they showed him affection to a certain degree. Zeke was definitely affection starved. He is just a product of slavery and war.
When I say Gabi and Zeke are similar, I mean in the sense of they’re both products created by manipulation, slavery and war. While Zeke’s grandparents were force feeding him shit they weren’t as forceful as his parents, granted. I understand he had to play two sides from young but it’s like he was raised in that while Gabi was thrown to the wolves when it came to figuring who she genuinely is. She’s a self hating eldian but an eldian all the same. And like Pieck said, she doesn’t trust Eldia but that doesn’t mean she trusts Marley too. It’s just the people who she loves lives in Marley and Gabi has to face the harsh reality that Marley was also using her and she would ever be considered one of them while Zeke, he understood that from the beginning (thanks to grisha). Zeke wasn’t suddenly faced with a reality check. His parents and grandparents reminded him of that reality everyday.
This is not to say Zeke didn’t suffer any trauma from this. He did and Gabi is also going through that now. It’s just a different kind of psychological damage they’re both facing.

In this anime there are no right and wrong sides.It's just that hatred, fear, revenge, sorrow in short negative emotions has taken over the heart. Indeed grisha was wrong, but given the circumstances seeing his last hope means his son fail took a huge toll on his mind.

Grisha's voice actor was the MVP of the episode..
AoT is one of the best shows I've watched in a while. To me it sends a big message towards life. When you're born into this world young and innocent, people bestow their own beliefs, religions, ways of thinking, etc. and it shows how it can affect a person. Eren and pretty much everyone on the show displayed that real well.
Grisha has learned from this mistake and let Eren be as much of a kid as he wanted and told him if he wanted answers he should go back to the basement.

Personally I just feel that I get why Grisha was the way he was. I don't justify anything but I get it.
Because he took his little sister out of the internment zone she died. She was *torn apart* by dogs. That would mess anybody up. And then his parents who have long since accepted the way they lived offered nothing to Grisha.
Griaha is angry, bitter, resentful and all of this boils over and he spills it on his firstborn, on Zeke. On the child he does not treat as a child because he in his mindset cannot comprehend the that which is the duality of man, logic and emotion.
In young Grisha's mind, Zeke is a cornerstone for the restorationists, there is nothing but the mission and Dina is very much the same way despite her saying Zeke was trying his best. She is not comforting, encouraging Zeke or even suggesting a new plan, but saying in a way that all is not lost and that Zeke is making the effort.
Furthermore, Zeke's plan of mass sterilization and slow euthanization just stems from his unresolved trauma. The way he experienced hatred and discrimination, the way he grew up, the way he was integrated in the military life of a child. What other plan could he have come up with?
The poor fools. The cycle continues.

You're exactly right, and this is why this story is so incredible. I despise Grisha for what he did, he was an abusive piece of shit to Zeke. But I get where he is coming from. I COULD NOT DISAGREE MORE with Zeke's plan of racial sterilisation, but _I get where he's coming from._ Everyone in this show has an explanation for what they do, even if it's not an excuse.
It's sad and horrible, but it doesn't justify essentially killing off an entire race. That's the same as giving in to the hatred. Even if his plan worked that doesn't reassure that Eldians still won't get beat to death or killed. His plan has flaws that doesn't even get to the root of the problem he considers his people the problem that should go away which isn't a solution.
The J/Yeager brothers act like they know what's best without even getting some fucking output on these ideals. They just said "They need us we don't need them you do your plan and I'll do mine, but first let's just fuck shit up and ruin are relationships.".

I relate with childhood Zeke a lot.. When you don't find the love and comfort from your own parents.. you start to look for it outside.. but the sad truth is not everyone outside is like Tom Ksaver.. he actually did care about Zeke like his own son.. in reality people will just try to use you because of your weaknesses

Not only is Grisha's VA going off, they have that effect of him screaming behind a closed door. It makes Zeke's proximity so much more dangerous. I know that sound of abuse, all too well.
His whole life is dangerous. You have him being seen as a threat to marleyans when walking outside.Liberio? ( where eldians live) being full of high security and people afraid to voice any opinions against the authorities because everything is being documented and listened to by marleyan radios. Not to mention with his parents being radicals and actively working towards a resistance that could get the whole family killed if caught. Zeke has been walking on a mind field since childhood.

@@bigman4407 YES it is but what their tryna do is make a longterm solution and unfortunately they need to sacrifice things for a bigger cause and it is to freed humans from the Titans 🥺🤦🏻♀️ it's fucked up I know but that's the most rational and well planned solution which is 200 years in the making. For now they don't have any much of a choice 🤷🏻♀️
