    Wonder if this would work on a "Zombie" tube where I accidentally did something similar: heater was at 9V for less than a second. Stupid I know but visible light emission is very low compared to another identical tube under same bias etc. I did hear that emissive coating damage is supposed to be irreversible but maybe not, plan is to try a variant of this where negative voltage is applied with tube at +170 Celsius so the coating is persuaded to re-coat the now cold heater by a variant of sputtering as this is essentially how it was applied at the factory. Might work on age weakened VFDs as well which would be excellent!

    Hi, great video. I have a custom 12 X 6550 (kt88) amp that red played all its output valves very quickly. The amp was turned off very very quickly, I turned down the bias pot and tried again. Although not going into red plate again, the power output was much less. The valves were all with less than 24 hours use. I suspect a capacitor. I am wondering if I might need to go through your process. I don't want to buy 12 new matched valves! I'm hoping the valves weren't taken too far and can be salvaged!

      it is a regulated power supply, in this case it gives a voltage of 5.3 volt to the filament of the tube and the filament withdraw a current of 1.3 amperes

  • @voxpathfinder15r

    Is this any different than leaving tubes in your guitar amplifiers with the standby switch on - so only the heaters are getting voltage?

    • @YoungAhn

    • @YoungAhn
      @YoungAhn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      good afternoon dear Fernando. Thanks for your comment. It depends on. If a tube is in good condition with just simple emission issue, it takes 3~5 hours is OK. But some tubes which were used for long time with overload, it takes 24 hours or more. Sometimes it is a small amount of improvement only. voltage is same as the original spec. Have a great day. • @tsloth1390
    @tsloth1390 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, I’m very surprised that works! It would seem like while you’re stripping your heaters you’re building a layer on your cathode, AKA cathode poisoning. I wonder if there is a way to heat the tube to fix this rather than apply heater voltage that long. I suppose if a tube is dead, one is less concerned with shortening its life🙃.

    What was the problem though? Did the intense heat of the short change the structure of the metal in the filament? Was this an annealing process?

    • @YoungAhn

    • @YoungAhn
      @YoungAhn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      It's because of high plate current caused by 0 bias(short circuit between filament ~ GND). No plate current at all after my mistake however the 300b tube was revitalized by supplying 5V for more than 10 hours. This method eliminates invisible gas layer which are concentrated on filament. watch my video again, you can save lots of money

    The tube was damaged. It was NOT a tube that lost it's ability to conduct from old age. You cannot revitalize a vacuum tube unless you disassemble it, replace the filament (or cathode if equipped), put in a new getter material, and then re-vacuum, seal, and initialize the getter to remove unwanted gases.
