This was my best friend’s great grandmother. My friend passed away about 10 years ago but we talked about this story so many times. She had old newspaper clippings about this. Fascinating story! My friend is buried in the Mills Cemetery. I don’t believe any of them have tombstones.
Oh my goodness my dad who is 95 remembers this and the people.. They were Pentecostal who thought they could bring her back from the dead.. They were definitely involved in a cult
Leonard mills was my great grandfather, so my grandfathers dad. Strange enough my grandpa was born may 1st 1933 so only a couple months after this happened. I don’t know the entire story, only bits and pieces from what my grandpa would tell us. But Leonard was in and out of insane asylums for my grandpas entire childhood, he would tell me that his dad would kind of wander back home after being gone for some time “he also had a drinking problem” and he would wake my grandpa’s oldest brother up, and make him sit down and play some kind of musical instrument for him all night long. Real coo coo stuff. I remember him telling me that the only thing his dad ever did for him worthwhile was to make him a basketball hoop outside their house, but they barely spoke and he never actually played ball with him. He wasn’t around a whole lot..I will say, our last visit to family down in Kentucky my cousin took us to the hill that Lucinda and John are both buried on, one was buried at the bottom and one at the very top of the other side..unfortunately i am not familiar with the area, I’ve only been down to visit family a handful of times that I can remember..we would normally go to the Mills cemetery, which is where my grandfather used to live in a house very close by to the cemetery with his mom and every so often Leonard his dad. It burnt down quite some time ago apparently…
What a generous and kind things to do for Lucinda Mills! I am sure that she is smiling down on you two wonderful people for bringing a grave marker for her.even though you don't know where her grave is located. You know there are feral people that live in the mountains. It sounds like Lucinda was part of a cult. Such a sad and tragic story. This is an awesome Halloween story guys!!
Well, this was an interesting story at best. Thank ya'll for bringing this story out. Heather, you are correct, crazy people didn't just come about in recent years. Its just become a lot more publicized and it sure seems more crazy people are around now. Im certain that Lucinda would be happy with the marker ya'll made and left for her. God bless ya'll and stay safe out there on your travels.
This is such an act of kindness. You two always go out of your way to do good things! I love listening to your podcasts because you dig into interesting things, but also because I feel like I genuinely like you guys!
The sad and interesting thing about history is that it is easily forgotten. I watch a lot of true crime and often say, evil/mental illness has existed for the beginning of time. Religion teachings are often full of cult like beliefs. It just takes the wrong person to twist it. Thanks for all that you do. Heather, should have brought your spirit box by the cabin.
I've only recently lived in warfield for the past 3 years and ive heard of this story in many different ways im greaful yall took the time to make the truth known and give her a beautiful stone
How crazy . Poor Lucinda ! RIP. I'd be afraid to go there period. You two are brave ! The marker is pretty! It's very nice of you to remember her ! Thanks !
This was a very bizarre story 😳 About a hundred different kinds of messed up all at once. It was very kind of you two to made that marker for Lucinda. I wonder what happened to the rest of the family? Thank you very much 🎃 Leo and Heather. Happy Halloween 🎃
Been catching up on these video. I appreciate your and Heathers hard work and dedication Leo. I thank you for all the elderly people who can't make the trip to these graves that are hard to get too. May both be REWARDED for all You do.
Very interesting story! This appears to be waaaaay out in the hollers of KY. Have you ever been confronted by anyone when looking for things like this?
Lol. Listen on police scanner one time to two officers who were freaking out because the family of a man they were serving a warrant on were coming out of the woods around them on ATV's. Lived in the mountain of East Tennessee bordering Frakes Kentucky.
May God Bless the both of you, Heather & Leo, most sweetest thing I've ever witnessed! A truly tangle minded, twisted up family! Burying in a crypt means, she may be buried partly underground or above. Usually under a church, you might want to look into old churches in the area! (Glen). WV.
Sad story. How crazy cults do this is unthinkable. Nice of you to leave a stone for her. Rough living back in the day. Whew! There are stories throught our country just like this, and worse. Really interesting.
I remember a long time ago, visiting my cousins in Breathitt County and they had a book about kind of folk legends from Breathitt and I remember a particular story in it. It seems that many people reported seeing the devil playing a fiddle and one of the most common places was sitting on rocks in the middle of creeks. Of course this sounded silly to me, so I would naturally not believe it. It makes sense now why Charlie Daniels would make a song about the Devil Went Down To Georgia, as people did believe the devil did indeed take on the form of a man and walk from place to place. I wish I could remember the name of the book. I have to say that all these videos and research into Appalachian history not only validates legends and stories that we all with ancestry from there heard growing up, but it confirms much of what we heard. I don't remember which video it was that you mentioned Jesse James, but I recall hearing that Frank was there because apparently he had a thing for one of my dad's relatives. I don't know how true that is, but you are the only other person I have ever heard mention it. Apparently, someone of my dad's cousin's grandfather was Frank James. The James' were really there? But, the thing I do know about the dark hills, and they are dark, is that many are still superstitious with customs that might seem strange to us, but having been there I can say that those dark hills are scary at night. Mountain Family cult, yes I can believe it.
I am related to her, but my dad told me never go there, there's mean people up in there, my grandfather was murdered right after he got out of WW2, nobody was ever arrested.
I think living rurally and not really being exposed to outside things and having someone mentally unstable be in charge is kinda like a charles manson thing that went on. That's crazy.
If I had the funds I’d travel the country and make markers for all we have lost no matter your race we all deserve to be known on this planet and have recognition for accomplishments
There`s a old area south of Richmond, Va. where there was a Tomahawk Plantation 300+ years ago, and in 1776, Tomahawk Baptist Church, then Tomahawk General store, then Tomahawk Lumber Co., etc., so perhaps somebody from there named that place in Kentucky after the one in Va. There`s a Tomahawk Baptist church in Arkansas as well, maybe named after the same place. Many families started in Va. and moved further west over the years.
@@thehillbillyfiles lol, Nah, in all sincerity, we have some really good people here. There are bad elements wherever you go but most people around these parts just try to get by and do the best they can. Religious sects and the occult made their way into these mountains as a result of the migrant workers who came to mine coal and harvest lumber. Education was seen as a luxury for the wealthy as most families sent their children to work as soon as they could, be it farming, mining, working for sawmills, and so on. That's not to say that common sense and ingenuity were lacking by any means, though. Our county has been used and exploited by external entities since the beginning, so nowadays, people are weary when outsiders come in, quickly form opinions and then propagate those opinions as a means to their own end. We've been exploited enough. Still, as I said, everyone around here are good people in large. We're proud of our heritage and our roots... in spite of the blemishes that do exist.
Oh my gosh, I know, I think the last name shouldn't have been on her stone either, she should get her maiden name back, he lost that honor when he killed her
What a sad and real story...can't imagine what came over the family to do such a thing...enjoyed this very much...hope I don't have nightmares. I truely believe that the Devil had a hold of them...🥰🥰
I think you have to remember how remote the area was they lived in. I think the were overtook by the religious overtures. It’s no excuse for what happened. Thanks for doing this story!
Heather: "Who wants to spend their day like that, in a shootout?" Oh come on, Heather, shootouts are fun! LOL :p J/K!! But in all seriousness, I've been interested in this case for a couple of years now. It's a very strange case. I just couldn't make up my mind if I wanted to do a blog about it or do a book about it. And I'm still unsure. But thank y'all for doing this video and bringing a much forgotten story back to life, no pun intended. Great job!

@nxsproductions you are totally correct on the county! Lucinda was my kids great-great grandmother and I know some of the story
You could add that other newspaper article unto her find a grave
I think Lucinda Ward Mills is like my 4th cousin twice removed (or something like that)!
That poor woman was murdered by her own family how very sad.
It's odd that not only is it her family but they're in their twenties and thirties when they did this
Maybe look in the achieves to see if they have it on record the exact place of buriel. They usually carry birth records as well...find a grave maybe
Oh my gosh, I know, I think the last name shouldn't have been on her stone either, she should get her maiden name back, he lost that honor when he killed her

Never heard of any cults there
