  • I cover ten wild edible mushrooms and plants you can forage in the spring. I share identification and foraging / hunting tips on how to forage these wild edible and medicinal. I foraged these mushrooms in the southeastern region (north carolina, tennessee, south Carolina, georgia, Virginia), but these information is also useful for the Northeast (New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire) and midwestern ( Oklahoma, Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky) forests as well. I also practice bushcraft / wilderness survival skills to cook and brew the plants.

    Your ethical explanation about ramps made my day. The first time a chef introduced me to these I noticed his entire batch had bulbs. The next time I saw them at a grocery store… the same thing. I knew they were special but years later I found out why. Thank you for sharing the detailed explanation. Ethical foraging is the way to go ❤

    That was the biggest wild leek patch I've ever seen. Thanks again for the timely info. I think chickweed is one that I commonly see, but hadn't identified yet. I'm definitely gonna check this Spring!!!

      I found some bigger ones that I didn't capture on video. I want to create a massive one when I get some land!

      @@sonofabear How come "grow" is not good enough? People misuse "create" so much. God creates plants, we just grow them. And that is great enough.
      What a fine feeling for nature, and the way you camp. Aren't you afraid of wild swine or something disturbing you? Or is there a door, gate, grid? I'll seek a video on how you made it. I have severe disease with 28 years sleep deprivation and consequent malnutrition etc, +freezing. But camping does much good.
      Thank you also for your beautiful fire. I mostly make just tiny ones, 3-4 inches of fire-wood inside a tiny fire-place of stones to steer the flames, protect it from weather, make safe for flyíng glows and not heat up the environment more than necessary.
      Also, every picture we make and send, taxes the deadly net of EMFs, aggravated now by all those satellites.
      How do you view this, please?
      And is there a biography on you? :-)

      @@sonofabear The entire world is now enjoying (?) unpredictable weather conditions. I'm in South Central Ontario, and the Maple sap started flowing last week, only to be cut off by a sudden drop in temperature and yesterday's fairly heavy snowfall. No matter what happens weatherwise, we will be able to grow *something* in the garden, and also do a bit of foraging. Last spring, I had two beautiful morels appear in my back yard! I hope more return this year. I also have a large bloom of Turkey Tail, and hope to harvest that soon, too. Thanks again, and best wishes!!
      ETA - the morels were *delicious* ! My wife is a skeptic at this point, so I had them all to myself. 🙂

    I know the video is a bit old, but for those foraging wild onion you need to watch out for the poisonous look alike. Death camus looks very similar to wild onion and i suggest you look up the differences between the two before eating them

    Thanks, I enjoyed that video. Only this last fall I started foraging mushrooms (carefully) with some success. I've eaten 7 different fungi and feel somewhat confident in recognizing them. I'm on the hunt for Morels now (I know it's a little early) but I really want to learn more about edible plants too. The fauna in this video looks very similar to where I am in Cherokee Co. NC

    • @sonofabear
      @sonofabear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome! Keep going and try to just learn 1 new plant or mushroom at a time. It can be overwhelming to try to learn them all at once. I'm in Buncombe county Nc, so it should look very similar!

    • @ScottWConvid19
      @ScottWConvid19 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Congratulations! I would certainly caution you in your confidence level. Especially with fungus. Many kinds have toxic look alikes that must be identified by spore prints and a microscope. I would recommend multiple sources of information as one or two might not have look alkes in them. I've gotten sick twice and once it was so bad for 36 hours death seemed like a great escape.
      If you can, join a mycology group that goes out and learn from veterans.
      Adam Harriton has a TH-cam channel called "Learn Your Land" and he's a great wealth of knowledge in mycology and botany.

    Loved the video. You are living what was my dream. Can you give the web address for Foraged Market? Do you know any foragers in the Rocky Mrs. From Colorado to Montana, including Idaho? Answer what you have time for. You have some of the best information.

    Great video, i've heard more & more lately that mushrooms should not be eaten raw which ive done quite a bit in the past, might explain my stomach issues, but not with alcohol, is new to me, could you elaborate please, is this none at all so like not even with a glass of wine at dinner or...?

    • @sonofabear
      @sonofabear  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes just certain mushrooms like Morels and Shaggy Ink Caps should never be consumed with alcohol. But you can consume alcohol with most other mushrooms.
