Have you ever heard the term “Internet of things”? It is already visible that more and more objects that we use in our daily life are connected to the Internet. There are so many different technological solutions, which enable a lot of opportunities to make living a lot easier; but it also influences our society in different aspects. We are happy to have Prof. Harald Haas at TEDxWHU who is working on some great technologies and who is going to share his thoughts and latest results with us. One of his main researches is called Li-Fi - the transmission of data via light. Haas currently holds the Chair of Mobile Communication at the University of Edinburgh and is Co-Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of pureLifi Ltd. Being an expert in the field of mobile communication, he already held multiple speeches at TEDGlobal on how data can be transmitted using only light by turning LED lightbulbs into data transmitting devices.

2020 update: LiFi is being installed in Paris subway stations with speed reaching upto 250 Gb/s.

to be fair though this video wasn't as mindblowing as the last one from 2011. The inovative aspect wasn't well presented and the meaning for our future can't be seen extracted that easily for the common viewer.
You are missing a very big issue. If you can't figure it out then you need to try. People are always overtaken by the good parts of technology and can't figure out the dark side on their own. They use their emotions for everything.

If you spend over 50% of your income on stocks and start-ups, that's what I would consider a VC. So how i got started? Got a high paying job and started putting money into innovative products. I have made most of my money on cryptocurrencies. And I am looking for all the transformative products that will bring the internet of things alive. LIFI is one of them, but unfortunately this guys works under a contract to a University in the UK.

it's makes me wonder how could signals be selected or filtered since the only way the info it received is in a DC binary format and the current filters work for frecuency in AC signal

Good as it is this is not "new" technology.
EMI on the A3 just south of London had a LAN - MAN powered by LED to connect all internal systems and the external buildings on the estate and then via cable to the outside world over 20 years ago. The problem we all face is the "Power, Politics and Religion" trilogy, if any one of this trilogy does not want it to happen it will not. Consider this, using Li-Fi would truly upset the balance of power, in effect it would enable free communications and that simple would not be allowed - hopefully this is the time for change, wish you all good luck
Depending on the bandwidth, this could be perfect for wireless VR headsets.

Does it transfer any RF ionization? How safe it is since we are under the light to work? Does the LiFi send radiation throught light?
LiFi does not use RF radiation, it is not a WiFi system built in a lightbulb.
LiFi uses the same light of illumination to deliver data via fast modulation in MHz scale, a million times faster than home TVs. So we don't see the effect modulation.

Generally, I agree that LiFi may be a better alternative to high frequency mobile phone radiation (up to 40 GHz). However, I raise my hand and say that we need to test this technology and its biological impacts. Insects and other animals who can process thousands of pictures per second may be affected when we send visible pulsed light for data transmission.
As light can't travel through walls, LIFI will always need LOS. So what can we modify so as to tackle NLOS challenge with this technology. Because we can't ensure Line of Sight in every condition!
assume that there are two different LIFI users in a same room. what will happen if one of the detectors sense light from two sources? Will there be a data glitch because constructive/destructive interference of light?

My kids LED lights have there own WiFi network and it’s unsecured. I’m trying to figure out how to lock her led strips so they can’t be hacked!! And 0 info on it.

I don't understand the point, you have the Router hooked to the internet. Why do you need the LiFi? Remove the LiFi and connect laptop direct to router. You can't bathe the air with Laser light.

He says that the light bandwidth is a "free'" resource, which is not entirely true, since electricity is not free, and the last time I checked, LED bulbs are powered by electricity.. Hidden expenses are indicated here which will not be felt until after we have swallowed the hook.

Not a laser. There are safety issues. Superluminescent diodes.
Hi Prof Dr Harald, could it possibly use thin glass fibre optic (like those used in lighting decor or Christmas Tree lights) to transmit the signal instead of fixed LED lights? It could be the cheapest way to get LiFi signals to the devices within an area. The fibre optic glass has already been in existence for many years now. thanks

why didn't the video get stopped when you interfere between the light rays and the receiver??
two possibilities:
1. the buffer wasn't empty yet.
2. the photodiode will also pick up on the reflections coming from the wall.
Or it has an IR-blaster as backup to send signals trough obstacles.
But I had the same question in mind. You would need at least 2 light frequencies to ensure transmission of signals.

One in visible light for high speed transmission which can be blocked by obstacles and one slower in the infra red spectrum which can pass trough obstacles to ensure transmission.

I think the reason it is not developed and used because it is not useful in the day time when the light bulbs become useless. (just a guess)

LiFi is good for fixed devices or devices which don't move. Any scenario where the light source is blocked, fails this technology alltogether
LiFi is more than good, it's potential is absolutely amazing.
As to your second sentence, in what situation will you ever be working in complete darkness? Even if you're in a dark room, the display that you use transmits light, of which the data can be encoded into that light.
You could even use an Ethernet over Power converter and every power outlet in your house instantly turns into a data carrier. Just plug an LED lamp up to it, and that room automatically has LiFi.
Any concern that a non Scientist / Engineer has, has already been thought of by an actual Scientist / Engineer. The problems with LiFi are much more technical than, "oh no, the light source is blocked, so much for our years of PhD research."

If you combined many LEDs to form an array you can make sure the pulsing is done from so many angles that even if you slightly raise your hand from the receiver the angle would suffice for a stable connection. A possible application would be a lifi network inside a hospital or mall.
Light can be invisible to the human eye. Like night-vision devices using active near-infrared illumination. A typical led night vision LED bulb that can illuminate the front of a house in complete darkness cost's about $5 on aliexpress and any cheap mobile phone camera sensor will be sensitive enough to make a photograp in complete darkness (e.g. it's not hard to pick up the invisible light wave).

LiFi does not transfer through walls. To use LiFi in a whole house you need an LiFi-enable LED lamp in every room. All these LED lamps can be connected as a single network or separate network.
LiFi like FSO is for point to point communication
LiFi is not FSO.
LiFi is not a point-to-point communications, it is designed to work with difused and divergent illumination light, it also works with light reflected on ceilings and walls.
didn't answer the most important question what about out doors during the day. I don't want to cover my windows during the day just so I can get better internet (or at night because I worry that the man in outside in his car might be stealing my passwords.)
Technical answers:
Daylight affects the performance of a LiFi system, data rates can degrade slightly. In the same fashion as Bluetooth interferes with WiFi.
LiFi is also secured by encryption in a similar fashion as WiFi. If someone tries to break a LiFi system, it is as easy as pulling the curtain.
dude.. in order to break security on a lifi connection, you'd need to be under the same light source.. simple.. even NSA and secret services would still need to read the heat off the screen of the device.. unless they still use conventional means like bunny hopping onto a router/modem and go from there..
but if user is using vpn and lifi .. kiss any hacker goodbye for a while.
not necessarily. lifi uses light which can be seen through the window, all you need is a light sensor (photo diode / transistor), some kind of focusing mechanism (ie a camera lens) + some cheap easily accessible components & some software, compare that to wifi that requires a purpose built (very difficult to make at home), (illegal in most countries) device. LiFi has its advantages in that it has low barrier of entry in terms of cost but that's about it. In terms of security improvement (of which there isn't much) it isn't worth the inconvenience of having to stay indoors and completely blocking off all windows.
LiFi will have it's uses but it definitely won't be on our smartphones or as a replacement for wifi. If the goal is to ease the electromagnetic spectrum then we can replace the wireless connection between two fixed spots with lifi (lasers) but that's about the only use we will see at-least in my opinion. only time will tell.

then when outdoors, like they said, outdoor light spots.. i dunno..
I'm sure when the refine it down further.. they could open tunnels in walls and focus light trail end to end with a t piece to allow traffic diversions to set devices like computer stations, and possibly those devices have wifi broadcast.
by smart devices if you are referring to IoT then yes, lifi has potential in that it is cheap & easy to implement
while for desktop computers I would much rather have wired connection with possible gigabit speed though I'm not sure if we'd even have desktop computer's by that time.
as for portable/wearable devices I'm not seeing much potential there, lifi is just too easy to block.

I for one don't wan't bright lights glaring at me from random places instead it'd be much cooler to see a large central tower with lasers pointing at it from all around.
