This is much better format; big games from the off, more games that matter and the knockout rounds are maintained. Let's be honest, in the old format there were only a handful of group and round of 16 games that were mouthwatering, especially for fans with no skin in the game. Don't let the Super League taint your opinion of this, this is not that, it's a meritocracy.
Not Horrendous at all, it will be much more fun now.. we play 8 different teams from europe now, instead of repeating the same 3 teams in the old format.. and it isn't complicated, top 8 go to quarters where they wait for the next 16 to play a knockout round to face them.
What's difficult to understand? And why is this worse than the group stage final games where teams play dead rubbers? I frankly think this format is exciting because every game means something with the final rankings from the opening phase determining the seedings for the knockout phase. (I am 100% disinterested as my club isn't in Europe this year.)
It's potentially a great thing. In paper we finally have big teams facing one another who'll be actively trying to win and not just trying not to lose like we see in the latter stages of all major tournaments.
Like the new format. It is more competitive and interesting. The competition is not static inside each group, each team is competing against every other teams constantly. Every game and every goal will matter in this new format. I think we will see more exciting football in this new format. You can not just score a goal and sit back for the rest of the game. Or, play a boring 0-0 draw to survive the group stage.
