*Starts watching Mr. H videos and hears intelligent British voice. *Pictures skinny British man, maybe wears glasses, drinks tea, sitting with books and/or video games. *Mr. H does a big reveal and turns out to be a Terminator T-800 (or is it 1000? Whatever model Arnold is). *Jaw still has not reset to normal position.

I was born in 1984 and this was my absolute favorite movie. ask any of my friends growing up. I literally watched it at least once a week for years on VHS.(along with Rambo, Red Dawn, RoboCop Etc. My twin brother and I would always fantasize in the future if they would ever make an Alien versus Predator movie. They did and it sucked ballz.

I was first introduced to this film by my dad and my aunt. My dad would tell me about this film while we were outside waiting for my sister to finish piano lessons. When I was 10, my dad decided that it was time to introduce me to this masterpiece. We watched it as a family with my aunt and grandmother and I LOVED it. It not only inspired me to get into the Alien and Predator franchise, but got me into working out and firearms. There’s a running joke at my local range that I’m trying to be like Dutch when I show up in the summer time with a sleeveless shirt. This film, it’s story, it’s characters, and its music will forever hold a special place in my heart.

  • @Zoloft77
    @Zoloft77 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

No kidding on your comment that this film didn't baby you into explaining the Predator's motives and means. As a kid watching this in 1987, I got it too.
My favorite example of that is the scene where a dying and defeated Predator trying to take down Dutch by blowing itself up. The look on Dutch's face as he saw the weird, alien digital symbols gradually disappear on its arm display told him as well as a kid (at the time) like myself that "IT"S A BOMB AND BETTER GET OUTTA THERE!" Coupled with the mimicry of Billy's laugh and you got one memorable scene among many.
Alright Mr. H! Do a retro review on Dark City. One seriously underrated sci-fi film with retro film noir detective themes. Just like your recommendations on watching The Predator, Dark City must and should have been viewed without the narrated intro.

So i had the privilege of going to CA and meeting Stan Winston back in 97, and I was invited to his studio to see the Predator suit in person, along with the Queen Alien, T-rex, pumpkin head and a few other things they had in their display room including the T-800, plus all of the Predator concept art. All I can say is that you don't realize how amazing/surreal that costume is until you see it in person. I'm 5' 10" and barley went to it's chest. It's Bio mask was the size of my torso. Rest in peace Stan, you were the very best. Thanks for this review Mr H....

Watched it on VHS when I was 6 years old, started collecting when I was 7, then a year later Kevin Peter Hall passed away to my shear shock on my 8th birthday April 10th 1991, so fast forward to now still loving it to this day. Was able to meet the niece and nephew of Kevin Peter Hall, got my first Predator tattoo last year on June 12th 2017 because it was the 30th anniversary my all favorite tattoo to date, and no other tattoo in the future will take it's place. For me Predator is 24-7-365 it is my shirts, my watch, my enamel pins, action figures, screen production used props, even a necklace given to me by Shannon Shea who worked on the suit back in 1987 and then was a consultant on Predators in 2010. Predator LOVE IT!!!

It's all these creative and talented people who worked on this that made it still an incredibly viable movie over 30 year after hitting the big screen.

I remember watching this on VHS at the age of 5-6... I was already obsessed with Arnies films from discovering The Terminator, and I did so in great fashion by sneaking the films from my Dads wardrobe. Predator had been recorded onto VHS from its Televised broadcasts and when I hit play the film was on the final third act between Arnie and the predator. I was so enthralled by the visuals, the creature creation and the brutal battle between the two brutes that when it finished I immediately rewoned the tape and watched it from the beggining. To this day it hold a special place in my heart and i share all you views and knowledge on this classic. Thanks for the review.

One of the few films you could watch almost daily and never gets old. Ever. You had actors playing characters that believed they were those character and behaved as such. Even with the cheesy lines, it didn't seem scripted or predictable. Something that's lost with today's films.

  • @Bevzthejcs
    @Bevzthejcs 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Such a classic film. As most here, i saw as a kid and was just absorbed in the whole thing; it was like a real thing happening in front of my eyes - god i wish i saw movies through those eyes again.... So much to like in this film; a perfect storm; big tough actors with real charisma, a tight script with very little dead wood (short snappy dialog with just the right touch of humour), a director who just loves to get stuck into the action (within 10 mins they're in the thick of it and you know all you need to know about the characters - genius), a fantastic score and of course one mother of a creature who is genuinely foreboding and scared the hell out of me as a kid.

Thank you for the review Mr H! This is my all time favorite movie. First time watching it I was 16 and I saw it after I watched Commando, so I had no idea what the movie was about and I thought it was another military style war story set in the jungle. It blew me away and was such a great experience! My favorite part of the film is toward the end when both Arnold and the Predator make preparations for the final battle. I just got a Predator tattoo on my forearm btw and the plan is to make a whole Predator sleeve with a jungle setting.

That bit about new films babying us is so true. Case in point Revenge of the Sith. Palpatine says to Anakin. "Remember what you told me about your mother and the Sand People," that would have been enough, but they had to stick the sound of Sand People in there as if we didn't know what they were.

Great review! I actually watched your review twice to ensure I picked up every detail. One of my all time favorites. It is the mark that everything else in that universe is measured against. About the humorous poke at masculinity, you should set in a tent with a mixed group of US Army rangers, Seals and SF and listen to the jokes. It is natural for veterans to lighten up by not taking ourselves too seriously all the time. To borrow from one of Stallone's characters, "We keep it light, until it's time to go completely dark". Cheers!

  • @xCobraCommanderx

The Predator is great for one reason.
    Suspenseful horror.
US imperialism is the narrative for the first half of the film. For the characters and the audience.
Half the film is a straight American War Romp.........then we and the cast are taken for a ride of sci-fi survival horror.
It is the key to why Predator works to this day.
The shear purity of that kind of story is unheard of today.
Movies today are full of fluff and explosive stuff.
Predator stands the sands of time by being a multi-narrative thriller.
The viewer is along for the ride.
Never never cut out the beginning.
    Never.
Every movie of today and the future that has this narrative will be plain as day. The viewer can see it coming. The first time you see Predator you have no idea. The commitment just isn’t there today in Hollywood.
Multifaceted narrative is what makes the Original Predator a masterpiece.

Solid review. Totally agree! The original Predator movie used suspense which made the movie gripping, leaving the predator reveal to the end. I know the franchise has to move on but it has lost its key elements which made this movie epic. Over time we have lost the dark, gritty, intelligent hunter which made the Predator such a interesting character.

Love the channel man. Congrats on that youtube play button. Kool voice for all the narration, explanation, and speculation of all these badass science fiction films, series and video games. The resident evil vids are great. Predator is undoubtedly one of my all time favorite films. It is nearly perfect. It works on all counts. Sci-fi, action, horror, thriller, sprinkled with bits of comedy. The pacing is good, cinematography, action sequences, etc... Perfect casting in my opinion especially for both the Predator and Dutch.
This is a movie that no matter when or what time of day its playing on TV you gotta stop to see what scene it is and watch for a few minutes or even ignore whatever else you were watching or doing and keep watching it lol! I caught it already started a few times and rewound the DVR or just put on either my dvd or digital copy from the start. I never get tired of it. I miss the practical effects in movies so much these days.
Dutch: So you cooked up a story and dropped the six of us in a meat grinder...What happened to you, Dillon? You used to be someone I could trust.
Dillon: I woke up. Why don't you? You're an asset. An expendable asset. And I used you to get the job done, got it? Dutch: My men are not expendable.. and I don't do this kind of work.
I Love this bit of dialogue.

The soundtrack and sound effects of the jungle really sell this movie. It is without a doubt one of the best sounding movies ever made. If you haven't seen the movie with a high quality sound system, you are seriously missing half the experience!

Great job for a great film... plus it's great to see you lay it out for us! I gotta say that I loved the first shot of the drop off. Because like you stated in the films minimalist approach this allowed your imagination to run wild with ideas of the Predator's origin. Either way the film affected me & friends of mine as a classic to this day!

This is my all time favourite movie. I even dare to say it's a masterpiece. The first time I saw this movie I was 11 years old. I only knew Arnold from Commando and Terminator 1. My brothers copied those movies onto an VHS tape from a pirate broadcast and I watched those movies every weekend. My favourite was Commando at the time but that was before I saw the very unknown Predator movie that we rented. I don't even think it was featured in the cinema here in Holland. The minute the movie ended I knew it would be my number one Arnold movie. Before we returned the movie we saw it two more times :-) Great review!

The way it ends I think it was absolutely begging for a sequel-but not the one we got with Danny Glover. One with Arnold! It’s a shame that that didn’t happen.

Shortly after Predator came out, I was a wee lad in elementary school on the tropical island of Guam. Arnold was due to speak at one of the schools on the island, so my Gifted and Talented class out together a very dodgy video based on the movie to invite him to our school.
He went with the university campus.
    We tried, dagnabbit!

Great review thanks saw this with my dad may he Rest In Peace. On opening weekend in the theater when I was 14. Best movie ever. The action the pacing the creature and the fact u didn’t get a real good look at the creature till he comes out of the water & dutch is covered in mud. Much like Jaws. We don’t need to see the monster in order to be afraid of it. That’s one problem with films today.

I first saw predator as a child. Mind you I was born in 1990, so I had seen it years after it was released. As a kid, Arnold Schwarzenegger was my all time favorite action hero. So when my mom had told me he was in it, I had to see it. At that age or atleast at that time, kids didn't really know much about aliens, outer space, or Sci Fi. So when I first saw the predator on the screen, I was curious at first. But the moment he took the mask off and he did that roar, I distinctly remember running behind my mom to hide lol. I think Predator was the first movie that introduced me to the Sci-Fi genre. Still to this day it is one of my all time favorite movies. We also got the greatest catch phrase of all time that is still used today. GET TO THE CHOPPA!!!

First R rated film I watched with my dad when I was a little kid. Will always be nostalgic and special to me. In my top 10 all time favorite films. Also why I named my first German Shepherd “Dutch”. No other Predator film will ever surpass the original.

Peter Cullen, the voice of Optimus Prime, created the sound of the Predator :)
I believe this was Arnold's brake out movie. It gave him the opportunity to portray a much more complex character and range than his previous roles in Conan and Commando.
Remember his first movie Hercules in New York they dubbed his voice because they thought people wouldn't understand him.

I just *Finished* Re-watching *The Predator* (For Better Analysis) in *UHD*
on the *OLED TV* and *Sennheiser's HD800* with the *Sony Dolby Amp.*
Since I was *6 Years old* and *Predator* was the First *Schwarzenegger* film that I seen from *Arnold.*
Re-Watching it again as an *Adult* didn't just *Re-ignite* my *childhood* but *brought* Me a *Whole New Perspective* and *Experience* to the *film.*
This *film* as I say *Phenomenal*
There will be No *Predator* film that will ever *Top* this.
And this was the *Cheesy Era* in *Arnold's Prime* and You think that here he is going to do his *Iconic* trademark like *Commando* but it takes completely *Turbulent* turn into *Reality.*
Where this is the *First* time where *Arnold* meets his *Match.*
*The Predator* doesn't care if *You* was *"7 time Mr Olympia"* or how *Strong* Your are.
He found out the *Hard* way that all the *Muscles* in the *World* wasn't going to *take* down this *Predator.*
After the *Predator* Dominated him. And it *left* Arnold with *No Choice* but to use his *Intelligence* and *Enginuity* to take *down* this *Alien Beast.*
And *What* I *Love* about the *film* is that You feel like there is *No Hope* You feel the *Unnerving Tension* that *Yes, Arnold could Die in this Film!*
And even in the *Shootout* You hear every *single* fiber, thread in *Detail*
The *Minigun* was so *Loud* that it didn't just *Blast* my *Eardrums* but it muted out all the other sounds *Visibly.*
And *Fun thing* I was having a *debate* if *Rambo* could take down *The Predator.*
But then when I saw that *The Predator* took down *2 Green Berets* from *Fort Brag* where *Rambo* came from. It really made *Me* think....*"Yeah I don't know about that"*
I would *Love* to see a *Video* on this. But I know that will probably *never* happen since this *Video* is *Years Passed Due.*
But This *Movie* is so *Epic* that it makes *Apocalypse Now* look like a *Six flags.*
And the *Sergeant Mac* reminded Me so *much* of *Colonel Walter.* His *Mannerisms, Awkward Pauses, Behavior* and *Everything.*
13:18 And I know that this was the *scene* that *inspired*
*Ghost In The Shell* the *90's* Anime Cyberpunk *Epic.*
It's *Crazy* to think that *Rocky IV* was the *Inspiration* for this *film* due to a *"cheesy joke"*
Wow. And *Rocky IV* still remains as *My Favorite* and first *Stallone* film that I saw.
It *adds* up since *You* see *Apollo* in this *Film*
Rocky's *Rival* and Arnold being *Stallone's* Rival.
And it's *Hard* to *Believe* that even *Carl Weathers* being *Big Guy* that even *Arnold* Towered over this *Guy.*
*Predator 1987* and *Predator II* will always be My *Favorite.* but *Predator 1987* will always remain*Iconic* and *Legendary.*

I would catch this movie on HBO as a kid back in the 80s, and for the longest time I missed the intro to it so never knew what it was called. For years I referred to it as 'Contra' because I thought it was very similar to the Contra video game.

I wish you have talked about Carl Weathers (Dillon) as he was one of the main characters throughout the ROCKY series I-IV and the best overall actor in the whole bunch. Another interesting thing is that actors woke up early morning to "pump up iron to look better on the screen" - in that hellish temperature where "Cambodia looks like Kansas".

You said it better than me. I don't have much to add. Except maybe how it's manly in a good way. Sure the masculine stereotypes are a bit silly but that just add a little bit of comedy to the first part of the film. You can make fun of and celebrate something at the same time. We also have the classic action film trope with the positive manly stereotype protagonist against the the negative manly stereotype antagonist and it's done very well. Watching this film will make you a goddamn manly sexual tyrannosaurus, just like me.

Glad you mentioned Alan Silvestri. Jim Cameron and Stan Winston...plus that jungle...jesus where was that.. Equador?.cheers.

I just finnished watching this movie again. Another thing to add is that the concept of technology vs. Nature. You have these big men with firepower and big guns fighting a creature with advanced technology. Later Dutch said it can see out trip wires. So they used the environment as their weapon. Dutch used the jungle against the Predator. Later with natural strength wins.

Still one of the best sci-fi action movies ever up there with aliens and Robocop, the first time i became aware of the film was when i saw the movie poster staring back at me from the cover of the paperback adaptation in my local bookstore ( i still have it somewhere in the house ) i bought it straight away and when i got home read it from cover to cover its a ok adaption the ending is different to the film version but i loved the story so when it came to my local Odeon i was there for the first showing and was not disappointed, great review mr H.
