I owe a lot to dirt cheap smartphones. A cheap smart phone helped my get my life back on track after I left my 12 year job at McDonald's in 2016 and got caught up in temp agency jobs and was evicted from my apartment with a baby on the way. $9.25 an hour working a kitchen, living in a 600 sq ft apartment to my grandparents basement with an aging car to $30 an hour, sitting on a forklift all day, back in my own place with my son and more things considered a luxuries than I ever had growing up. Learning to be independent again after everything fell apart all started with a $20 TracFone ZTE Citrine. I used a Motorola G 5G 2022 model for a couple years. Good phone.

Nice little thing to know with most of these kinds of smartphones:
It's possible to prevent the phone from installing random apps without your consent by disabling "Mobile services manager" (sometimes also called "DT Ignite") in the apps list under settings. Sometimes it's under "system apps" so look there if you don't see it. You may also force disable it using ADB but I haven't had to do that.

Motorola phones are outstanding value and still have headphone jacks and memory card slots.
They also have an almost bare Android install which means snappy response, no factory spamware and early SW updates 👍

I have been a Tracfone user for 20 years. They use Verizon towers and i always have good cell phone coverage. I have had 5 different types of phones from different manufacturers but all were Tracfones. The Moto one was pretty good but Samsung is the best one so far. My plan costs me about $22 a month with unlimited text and calling and 2 Gig of data usage. I usually order from HSN as they have some good bundles and usually unlimited text and calling. I still have to buy a new plan every month to keep my phone #. Every time I upgrade from one phone to the next model it seems to go up in price about $50 for the purchase but the new features seem worth it and the phone lasts me about 3 years at least. They never break and my last Samsung Galaxy A50 cost me $150 and to upgrade to the next one will cost me a little over $200. These new faster ARM processors keep getting better and faster every generation. I'm totally satisfied with Tracfone. Tracfone carries some Iphones but I won't pay the extra money for that cult company.

I used to love Tracfone, but when I had it they were using AT&T towers. I wonder if they use both now or if they totally changed to Verizon? Back then if you had a regular AT&T plan and you broke your contract phone, you could buy one of these cheap ones and simply put your sim card in it and carry on. Can't do that anymore because I guess they figured out that consumers were actually saving money that way.

    • @kronos5385

It's possible that Tracfone uses different service providers in different parts of the country. When I moved from the West coast to the East coast I had to get a new Sim card from Tracfone but the transition was otherwise transparent. I did change my phone number to an East coast Area code and number. Didn't have to change phones.

They work well, have decent cameras, and don't attract the attention of thieves. Even if they were to be stolen, we would only be out less than $200 for each phone, which is an easier hit to deal with than a $1000+ iPhone or high-end Samsung.

Secondly it leads to fraud because people literally sell available numbers online that then stores use to give switcher deals to folks who would normally just be a new line and not qualify for the switcher deals on phones. If none of that made sense, good, your brain is working fine.

i bought a moto g stylus 5g (2021) for $70 and it came with a year of tracfone service. 100 minutes, 100 text, and 1GB data for the whole year. i just used it as a wifi device and its awesome for that. fabulous screen for the price, fast and responsive, the stylus works very well. usb c and very fast charging. It has 3 charging speeds, depending what you plug it tinto, fastest being Turbo. it has a very fast fingerprint unlock on the BACK, where they belong, much faster than the in screen fingerprint reader on my samsung.
fast wifi, bluetooth never disconnects, overall for the price i dont think you can beat them.

Currently a user of a Motorola edge 2022. Pretty decent phone nothing wrong with it and I enjoy it. It was a very good value for what I paid for it

Hello! I'm the proud owner of a moto g stylus 5G (2022) smartphone that I have owned since 2023. It gets the job done without having me sacrifice functionality for the price. Bonus fact: as someone who used to sell these prepaid phones through stores like Metro by T-Mobile and Cricket Wireless, I can verify that the insanly low price for these phones are done what's the expectation that you're going to buy service to go with it. Some people get burner phones from the dollar store, while most of the dealers I've sold phones to where buying iPhone SEs and iPhone 11s.

If you want to try them with wi-fi only, try doing a factory reset and then set up the phones without installing any SIMs in them. Also due to new FCC reg, you can get the phone unlocked after 60 days, cancel the initial plan, and change carriers. If a phone has an older version of Android, it most likely has an old image installed and will need updates of the Google, Chrome and Play Store apps, before you can do anything else and not have issues.

The moto g go is my camping/back up phone. I have premium, so I download a fair amount of videos, and the battery life is just insane. Phone is smooth enough, sound and camera are enough for day-to-day use, definitely recommend. Only issue I've actually had was apps closing out during some serious doomscrolling. Probably my fault, or the sign I needed to put it down.
For the price, it's good to grab 2 of them for a mishap on your main. Also, if you see this, give it a full charge and just leave it, I think mine made it 9 days.
The g play is decent, I rocked it a few months while I was struggling, pretty similar to the go, as just an emergency backup phone, it's not enough of a difference for paying almost double.
