    This is a great video. I played my drums many years ago but since moving to a new area have not been able to find like minded folks. So, my many drums have adorned my walls and home for abut 10 years. Now I am retired and have time to 're-learn". My first challeng was what is the D-K-T-P and which hand do I use - lol. This video took me right to where I need to be. I will be following and practicing every day. THANK YOU for making this so simple to understand.

      One of my first frame drums was a Buffalo Drum actually! The tone will be a bit deeper, more earthy, but all the same strokes can be played!

    Thanks ken this is awesome. Is this time signature still 4/4 or is it 5/4?

    • @kenshorley
      @kenshorley  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! You can actually apply different time signatures to these sequences of five. I hear these patterns in 5/8 actually, although 5/4 works as well.

    Hi Ken and thanks a lot for this beautiful lesson. I was wondering how do you manage not to make your framedrum move at all while you are playing? Mine is really "dancing' a lot when I hit it, specially with the palm of my hand... and I'm quite sure this is not good at all :)
    (my framedrum is a Remo 22"x2,5" Rahmentrommel)

    • @kenshorley
      @kenshorley  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! Glad you enjoyed this lesson! Given the dimensions of your drum (22" wide x 2.5" deep) this 'knee dancing' problem will be more of a challenge for you. Frame drums with smaller diameters or deeper shell depths are, in general, easier to control.
      One suggestion that may help comes from a former student of mine. She encountered a similar problem when playing, and she found that putting a small piece of material known as 'rubber drawer liner' across her leg, under the drum, helped to keep the frame drum in place. Hope this helps!

      Have a look at the frame drum offerings from Remo and Meinl. They have a range of affordable options for folks who are new to the frame drum.

    Thanks for the video. So the time signature is 5/4 and divided into two pulses 2+3)?

    • @kenshorley
      @kenshorley  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes if you're notating rhythms in five, you could use a 5/4 or 5/8 time signature. And most fives are divided into two groupings - either 2+3 or 3+2.

      They are homemade acoustic panels using rigid insulation boards wrapped in fabric.

    I currently bought a shaman dram with a stick from Amazon.The frame of it is not like your drum. Is it also possible to play it with my hands like you are doing? I don’t know if it sound not like yours because of the fact that I’m beginner or because my drum is not made for that. I appreciate your reply.

    • @kenshorley
      @kenshorley  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello! A 'shaman' drum is typically tuned much lower, and often has a thicker drum skin, which sounds less responsive than these Cooperman tars, where the skin is artificial and can be tuned up fairly high.
      It's certainly possible to use your drum to learn these rhythms, but as you mentioned, the sound will be different.
