Is it normal for your upper arm to ache when starting the frame drum. Is it just a case of getting used to hanging your arm there or should the posture be corrected?
Ache? No that's not normal. You'll need to find a way of keeping your upper arm relaxed especially if you're playing a large diameter drum. But if you're feeling pain, you may be holding tension in that arm.

Steady and slow practice over time will help this a lot. My advice is to make sure you're not holding tension in your hands or arms.
Thanks! Perhaps you can do a video about counting and playing accurately at fast speeds? Whether it's better to count like 1 e & a, 2 e & a, or use Solkatu, which every way professional players do it.

Yes I think so! Solkattu is amazing for rhythmic skill building in any style of music.

If you're ready for a serious instrument, then I highly recommend Cooperman frame drums. If you are budget minded, look to Meinl or Remo for some good options. If it's your first frame drum, I recommend getting one with a 16" diameter which has a synthetic head.

Hello what kind of drum is this?
I'm playing an 18" Tar, a custom frame drum made by Cooperman Drums in Vermont USA.
I do not understand how you keep the drum from moving around. Mine wobbles and slides. No one seems to address exactly how it's held in place. Can you please explain?
Hi Tamie. Usually when this happens, the player can do one of two things (or both!). First, make sure that you're putting enough pressure on the top of the drum - not enough to cause tension in your supporting hand, but enough to stabilize the movement of the drum.
