This might be my favorite album from them in a long time!!!!!!!!! It felt like this album had a some heart behind it and I haven’t felt that way in along time
I don't get a lot of "old fans" they want the old fall out boy but then complain that they are old to sing about the old stuff, they try something new and then it's also wrong, by far this disc better than everything else except IOH and Folie
I'm one of those "old fans" but I'm not sure what you are talking about "old stuff" and "something new and then it's also wrong." My biggest complaint is that ever since reuniting, they seem to be over reliant on other people's music or sounds instead of sounding like themselves. I like "Centuries", but it is nearly ruined by the "Tom's Diner" sample slapped on top of it. Save Rock and Roll had a guest artist on nearly every track... And this album, you can hear the influences, but it sounds like they are relying on those influences to hook you in. These homages should be the icing on the cake, not a primary ingredient. "Heaven, Iowa" would be fantastic without the Phil Collins homage, but adding it pushes the song over the top. "Hold Me Like A Grudge" on the other hand is relying on that "Another One Bites the Dust" sounding bass riff. Without that, the verses just fall flat... When they should be able to stand on their own before that bass line is dropped in to enhance them. Folie sounds like Fall Out Boy featuring contributions by other artists. Everything since then sounds like Fall Out Boy using other artists as a crutch.
Because we've seen and heard them do better. It's like getting a C in school is fine for most students, but if you see the kid who used to get straight A's get a B, you ask them if something is wrong.
I've been a fan of FOB since 2008 and i love all of the eras, but there's a special space for the early years in my heart hahaha i really loved that, there are tracks where we can see the influence of soul/r&b in pat's voice (it reminds me of the INFINITY ON HIGH), and there some tracks like WATTBA that i notice a Earth Wind & Fire influence (reminds me of SEPTEMBER) and also Beach Boys on SGRN! love that they are rescueing they're old stuff without letting the present sound go! listening on repeat! liked a lot the reaction 😊 cheers from Brazil! 1+ subscribe
Agreed on "what Mania should have been", but Folie 2.0? You must be smoking crack if you think Stardust is even 1/3rd as good as Folie. Stardust is there best album since Folie, but still not close to being as good.
i dont get ppl who were expecting it to match the golden era (ioh/folie) like they dont have to make something better than or at the same level as those albums for it to be good. i feel like a lotta old fob fans are extremely hypercritical of them to the point where even if they put out a good album, there is still so many nitpicks. like we dont need another folie-level album, genuinely. is it not already great how this one blew several of their others out of the water? its okay to miss how they used to be but i feel like we are being way too hard on every single thing they do. most of the other artists i love dont have fanbases that expect them to create their next magnum opus, like i mean. it takes away from the value of the magnum opus itself.
great vid. this album to most oldhead fans (me included) i think will feel like a strong step in the right direction. the writing is not at its former apex (the folie infinity era) but the sound feels like it has character again, which i did not feel almost at all on mania and barely felt on ab/ap. there are signs here that they are more willing to go back to a more natural fall out boy sound. the reception of the album being positive gives me hope that they will push it forward even more on the next project. as someone who thinks infinity and folie are both tens, this feels somewhat like a return to form. if they can strengthen the writing (not go back to exactly how they used to write, but go for those extended metaphors like you said and more engaging topics) and push the sound forward more, i think they'll be in a great spot. what a time to be alive, heaven iowa, and so much for stardust are definitely some of the best songs they've made in a LONG time. i agree with a lot of your points, it feels ALMOST there but not quite, i am excited for the future of the band as well. great vid tho fr, your energy is amazing!!
Been a fall out boy fan since 2005 (since I was 10 yo) this album might be top three for me in their discography. It’s the first post hiatus fob album that I think u can argue is better than a pre hiatus fob record. (I think it’s better than folie) I was also listening to a lot of 70’s n 80’s music (this album also incorporates songs from the 50’s 🤯) last summer so that might be another reason I enjoy it so much. Hope you give it a few more listens I think it might grow on you! I also think Heaven, Iowa is the best track on the record. The build up really hits when you reach the end of the song.
I feel the same, it's a lot better than Mania but I was still hoping for more🤷🏻♀️ Nothing came close to pre-hiatus FOB for me. Also, love your The Smiths shirt!
Wow, that's the exact opposite reaction of what I had to "Heaven, Iowa". That chorus is sooooo good and then the second time it adds that Phil Collins inspired drum lead in, just put it over the top. But you gave the song a pass, 🤷. Still same overall rating of the album as a whole of about a 5/10.
Changing my rating. No idea what happened, but this album crept into my dreams last night. It's now an 8/10 for me which puts it just under IOH. There are still cringe parts that I don't think I will ever enjoy, but man it is so nice to have a thoroughly good album from these guys again.
Hi Falon - So , Fall Out Boy & you are continuing to fall out. Hopefully they'll redeem themselves in concert this summer. I just listened to the new Depeche Mode which is surprisingly good & am seeing them on Tuesday. Hope they play loads of tracks from Black Celebration. See Ya 👋
i literally don’t know what you want from them if you didn’t like mania and you didn’t like this but you liked folie

I absolutely love this album. It just gives me the feels.
Mania was not a fumble in my opinion, it's really strange that you say that like it's fact.
Old fall out boy fans are so cynical
Because we've seen and heard them do better. It's like getting a C in school is fine for most students, but if you see the kid who used to get straight A's get a B, you ask them if something is wrong.
I really liked this album, great sampler of most of my favorite eras of FOB

I’m view this album as a Folie deux 2.0 or even what mania shouldve been

its a nice return to form for me, some catchy melodies solid riffs some nice chorus’

Right!! All the comparisons just kinda prevent you from enjoying the music as it is. If you want something like folie listen to folie.

Kintsugi kid is definitely #1 for me.
