I have a 1947 Delta 14" bandsaw that I rebuilt. It was in bad shape but works great now. The bearings had spun in the cast iron
wheels so I bored them out and made steel sleeves for them. A lot of work but I like old machines.
Glad you did this install for the Carter guides. I have been looking at upgrading to the same.
I live in Portland and wished I could have went to the Symposium this year but we had a vacation scheduled.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I bought an old Delta 14 with this attachment and I have had a heck of a time trying to make any adjustments. I didn't want to force anything fearing I might break it. Seeing how you installed and adjusted it I can now remove it and clean/adjust with confidence.

Thanks for your video . I have the same mediocre bandsaw and finally decided to do a Carter upgrade. Watching you saved me a lot of time and frustration. Had to get the bottom screws out with a torch and impact driver also. Should have done this years ago .

Thank you so much for this video. I am planning to get this set for my ancient Delta 14" bandsaw that I bought used. All the old guide components are original, knobs hard to turn, guides don't do their job, etc. You've confirmed that this purchase will be worth my while. Actually pretty excited about this upgrade.

I had that same model and was not really happy with it. I opted to sell it and replace it with a Rikon 18" BS instead of upgrading the guides for the Delta whcih did not have a fence. Glad we had an opportunity to chat at the symposium, Gord. Good to meet you in person.

Gord, I did the same thing with my new 17" Grizzly a few years back. Even though it was new it wouldn't resaw straight no matter what I did. I purchase expensive Laguna blades and that lasted only briefly. I was disgusted. I met the Carter crew at a woodworkers show and purchased the guides with a money-back guarantee. Wow, what a difference! No more fooling around, no adjusting, no more making excuses for still sharp blades, nada. My blades seem to last much longer and the cut quality is superb. Excellent video and instruction. A tip: be sure to use Break-Free gun oil or a similar synthetic oil for modern semi-auto rifles. Those bearings will glide beautifully and no worries after cutting green wood. :)

Sir, I'm glad the upgrade resulted in you being happy with the improved ability of your saw. At 14:30 you begin a resawing cut. I've been taught that what you did is the REVERSE of what yields best results. It's going to give a better cut if the resulting THINNER portion of the board is not between the fence and the blade. The resulting THINNER portion of the board should be OUTSIDE of the blade. Best regards, Jack

Great Video. The point of setting blade gullet on centerline of tire was worth the watch. I have been thinking of doing this upgrade to my saw. I rebuild these saws and sell them but have never installed a Carter guide system. This video was a real eye opener in my decision to upgrade a saw I picked up last year as a basket case. Both guide castings were broken from a nasty overturn as were the table trunions. The Carter system is just as cheap as picking up original equipment used guides and improves the saw performance. I may even do over a Powermatic "Gumby".

I wish you were going to be there, Gerald. It would very nice to meet you in person. I don't know if I will make it to another one; it's close enough for me to drive and I don't like flying so others may be too far away. Also, I can't always justify the costs involved.

I have used Carter band saw guides for a very long time. If I have a band saw no matter the brand it WILL have Carter blade guides on it. They are that good.

I have the same kit for my 14 inch Jet band saw, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!! If you want an easier way to tension your blades, and relax the tension when your saw is not in use(prevents the blade developing a memory), get Carter's blade tensioning system, and their Cobra Coil. I have done all of these upgrades to my band saw, and it runs better than it ever has. My band saw is a pretty old one, it still (for now) has it's original gray paint, which is a bit darker than your Delta. I want to say this is from the 1960's, but I haven't been able to find anything that would suggest a build date.
Thank you for the tip. I have checked out the cobra coil and it looks like it’s very affordable. The blade tensioning system on my Delta looks very much like the one in the picture from Carter’s system. Is there much difference that I’m not seeing? Once again, I really appreciate the tip. I will be thinking about getting at least the cobra coil and will have to think about the blade tensioning system as it does not look much different. Thanks for watching my video!

@@GordonRock1 I'm not sure how the lever on a Delta works, but the Carter system has 3 positions to their lever. All the way up is for normal operation, the middle is to release enough tension so the blade doesn't develop a memory from sitting on the wheels for a long time, and the lowest position allows you to remove the blade without ever having to turn the tensioning screw again, or having to walk the blade off the wheel. Just like Ron Popeil used to say "Just set it and forget it"
EDIT.........I forgot to add that I have changed the tires to urethane and replaced both the upper and lower wheel bearings. The only thing I have left to do is add a riser block, clean everything up, and a give it a fresh new paint job.

Gord this is a great video. I recently purchased a late night 90’s delta 14” bandsaw with 1hp motor. Someday I’ll do the guide upgrade, but I am interested first in adding the riser block. I’m having a hard time finding some of the components, mainly the longer round guide bar and blade longer blade guards. Only ones on ebay are for hex bars. Anyway, would be nice to know if you did the riser retrofit and where you got it? Thanks.

Gord, great video.. Thinking about adding the guides on my Delta Bandsaw, Looks the same as yours minus the riser. Was wondering if I use a 1/4 blade would I be able to cut curves as long as there not to tight a radius?
Yes, you can. According to a chart I have you should be able to cut a radius of 5/8" with a 1/4" bandsaw blade. If you do a google search for "Bandsaw Radius Chart" you should be able to find one to print out if you want to. Hope that helps.

Should get my upgrade kit tomorrow. I bought a 28-206 and a 6" riser block in 2003. Tires gave out this year and replaced them. Has not cut straight since then. No matter what I do. I am hoping that using this upgrade kit will do the job and mine operates as good as yours looks. Appreciate your video. It eliminates a lot of the uncertainty and anxiety about taking on the task. I need my Bandsaw working. My Craftsman 10 inch is juts not big enough. :
I should make clear, I centered the back of the blade gullet on the new tire. And it still did not cut straight.

@@GordonRock1 received the upgrade kit today and installed it. Referred to your video to solve one difficulty I was having, I was attempting to mount the lower guide rail upside down. Lack of brain power prevented me from figuring that out myself. lol The difference in saw performance is like that between night and day. Excellent upgrade. Excellent video tutorial.

Gord, Thanks for the great video. One thing you video doesn't quite show is if the new Carter setup increases the useable clearance between the bottom of the table and the guides. With the old blocks it is the hardware holding the blocks that limits space on the adjustable track more than the guides themselves. Half an inch more space would make a dust collecting setup simpler.

@@GordonRock1 Gord, My intention wasn't to be critical at all. I am asking if the new guides create more space beneath the table. (for adding dust collection) I am sure the distance between the bottom of the table and the guides themselves is the same. It is the hardware holding the guides that looks way less bulky in the new ones. I thought your video was perfect the way it is and shows how to do the conversion really well.
Sorry, John, obviously I didn't read it properly but I didn't think you were being critical. To answer your question; finally!! There is more space. I don't know if there is enough space to fabricate an additional dust collection port. The port on mine isn't perfect by any means but it works well enough that I don't see the need to add more. Is yours the same bandsaw? My apologies for not answering properly when you first asked. I hope this is helpful.

The fence is called Ex-Pand-A-Fence. It's sold by Woodworker's Haven who are in Baden, Ontario, Canada. Their Toll Free number (at least in Canada) is 888-994-2836. I called today to confirm that it is still available and it is priced at $159.00 for the double fence which is what I have. I've had mine since 2007 and now that I've upgrade the bandsaw with the new roller guides I am VERY happy with it. I hope they are able to help you get yours working as well as mine. When I talked to Mike today he told me that they also sell a set of roller guides. I don't know how the quality compares with the Carter Guide set I bought but I'm sure he can advise you on that. @gord thanks for the video! Are your wheels coplanar? I have just got a used Delta 14” bandsaw (with riser) and it doesn’t allow the blade’s gullet to track center. The wheel rubs against the top housing when adjusting tracking that far.

Great video it's good to see us old timers making good use of the Green Screen. Back in the early 80's, I was the lead tech at Rockwell/Delta in Boston. I have had 2 of these 14" bandsaws personally since then and the one I have now has the 6" ext. block as yours does. Now the only mod I did on mine was to add a 3/4 HP motor and all was good. I honestly don't use it a heck of a lot, but I was intrigued as to your claim for making it better and I was skeptical, having repaired a boat load of these. I get it. I don't have a tall fence for re-saw as you do, interesting. The drag coefficient from block to bearing when cutting precise at that depth must change. I'm thinking I may try and use some polyurethane plastics to replace my blocks. have you done anything with that at all ? Thanks, John
Thanks for watching the video, John. No, I haven’t tried using any plastics to replace the blocks. I tried those Cool Blocks but was never happy with them. I was delighted to find the upgrade kit from Carter Products and I am still very happy that I did the upgrade. I don’t use mine very often either but it is a pleasure to use now whereas it was very frustrating to use before the upgrade. I had always been told that using a fence was a waste of time. Using it with the fence now works very well. I am able to ripsaw a very thin slice very accurately. Thanks for watching, John. I appreciate the support!
If the bearings are set at one height, I find that raising the guides can change that because the mechanism to raise and lower the guides is very crude. Any suggestions? Also, where did you get that beautiful fence for resawing?
Fred, I can’t think of any suggestions to make about raising and lowering the guides. I also find them a bit crude but I’ve gotten used to that. The fence I use is called the "Ex-Pand-A Fence". I did a Google search for it and I don’t think it is available any longer. I have had mine for more than 20 years. I’m sorry I’m not any help to you on this! I hope the video helps in some other way. My up-grade did not go as smoothly as yours. I have a Porter Cable model. The kit I got from C&S was supposed to work on my saw. The top interchanged perfectly but the bottom didn’t line up at all. However it does a nice job, so the top is C&S and the bottom is porter cable. Thanks for sharing. I hope you have great success with it. DS
Did you address this issue with the guys at Carter? I found them very easy to talk to and very willing to help. Met them at the woodworking show in NJ twice now, and still amazed at how quickly Alex works on his bandsaws.

I have the same bandsaw. Nice video. How do you deal with dust collection on that bandsaw?
I have it connected to my dust collector but it doesn’t do a very good job. Occasionally I open the doors and use a hose to extract the dust that builds up. Not much more I can do.

I am an owner of multiple Delta 14" band saws (including two 2-speed metal/wood cutting saws). I am a huge fan of old Delta band saws, much as I am a huge fan of old DeWalt radial arm saws. The new version, Delta 14" band saw shown in the above video, doesn't compare in quality. I also learned that the Delta band saws have been made by a succession of owners over the years. I wonder who is making them now.

I was told a few years ago that Delta was bought by a Chinese company and that it has become very difficult to find parts for them. I don’t know if that’s true but so far haven’t needed to buy parts. I hope I don’t need to in the future. There do seem to be plenty of after market suppliers out there so maybe it won’t be a problem. Thanks for watching!

Gord, I have the same Delta bandsaw as you and upgraded as well. My issue is with the circle cutting jig I made from the various TH-cam videos. I made mine with a dovetail slot where I am able to vary the radius of the circle vs a fixed radius. I have tried aligning the pivot point in line with blade , in front of the blade, and behind the blade but the blade keeps coming off completely. I am trying to cut a 15 circle and have been unsuccessful with a 1/2“ blade and 1/4”blades. Have you had issues like this with the Carter bushing when cutting circles?
I am afraid I have never tried cutting circles with it since upgrading my bandsaw. Sorry, I can’t help you much with that!

What fence are you using on your Delta 14" band saw?
I'm sorry, Harry, but I don't recall what brand it is. I bought it at a woodworking show many years ago! I am unable to find any paperwork that came with it.
Gord, awesome video. To be clear. If I get the Delta 14" bandsaw and make this upgrade it will be a great bandsaw for the going price of $699 (minus the fence which I will purchase one) in your opinion? In other words, you like the other aspects of the saw.

My bandsaw is an old Rockwell model 14. I believe they were subsequently bought out by Delta....your machine looks very, very similar to mine: just much newer. ;-)
Actual step one--for viewers who may not know better--is to unplug the machine! ;-)
There are many old Rockwell bandsaws out there that are working just perfectly. It’s not the age of the tool but the condition that it is in that matters. I hope you enjoy your bandsaw as much as I enjoy mine. 😃😃😃 Thanks for watching!

I bought the riser when I bought the bandsaw. That was years ago and the tool store I got it from is out of business. I don’t know if they are still available or not but I would start with a google search or call a tool supplier if there is one near you. Sorry I’m not more help! I hope you can find one.

Go to carterproducts.com to find the kit you need. They have them for many different bandsaws. Mine might not be the same as yours.
I am debating buying a carter guide for my delta. I am a hobbyist, so the expense is significant for me. Can you tell me benefits and if you think it’s worth it. I don’t have an extender block and am working off the original cool blocks from delta.
I’m a hobbyist as well. Before the upgrade I could never get a straight cut. As I showed in the video, I can now get a straight cut using the fence. The difference is like night and day. Only you can decide if it is worth it to you. For me it has definitely been worth it. Before the upgrade I avoided using the bandsaw unless I really needed it. Gord Rock definitely helps. For me, I feel that I am constantly putting pressure on the blade as I am doing radius cuts- the blade twists and turns. I am assuming the carter guide will resolve this?

I installed the Carter kit on my Delta 14 inch bandsaw. It looks like I'v lost about one inch cutting capacity.
I don’t recall losing any cutting capacity but that was quite a while ago. Are you talking about capacity in height or the depth? Anyway, thanks for watching!
@@GordonRock1 , because of the way the blade guard is attached to the guide post I lose about an inch in how far the upper guide will slide up, thus reducing the thickness of wood that I can now cut. Or I guess you would say the height of the wood that will fit into the blade now.
Ha, but then you have those people who claim that Laguna saws are superior primarily because they use a cool-block system rather than bearings. I suppose one issue with bearings is that they can compress rather than scrape off sawdust.

It would only bother me if I had to run a long board through it while it was wobbling. Glad to hear it was only a minor adjustment. Cheers
