Ah yess, the 90s, what a fantastic era for metal.
chaos ad is the answer of sepultura to bands like prong or helmet, more minimal and straight than the previous ones. really good, but for me, arise is even better, a real epitome of the best of thrash and death styles. original, fresh, nasty. songs: "Dead Embryonic Cells", "Desperate Cry", "Altered State", "Arise"
Arise was perfection.
I saw Pantera and prong in 96 ... sepultura was supposed to play but cancelled because max had a knee injury...was pissed that I missed them but still a killer show 🤘🤘
Rap and Sepultura were ghetto music (of course "metal" at that time was kinda like Alien stuff but...), it contained a lot of strength for those who struggled on a daily basis, and both Metal in Brazil and root Rap were obviously frowned upon by the elite and the media. I miss those days man.

Sepultura was one of the bands that understood that in thrash metal the guitars are almost like another percussion instrument bombarding the listener with waves of heavy riffs.

You need to check out Under A Pale Grey Sky, a live album on the last tour that Max did with them. As live albums go, it's VERY good.

love the stank face bro... lol, yeah, this stuff was soooo filthy at the time, and still is, there was not many bands folding in the tribal stuff either drumming wise... so this song, even now... blew us all away (along with Max being borderline death vocals... maybe raspy is a better description?).. they knew how to sludge and make mosh parts as good as say Anthrax and Napalm Death... this song defies date, still so original...
Igor is awesome because he’s a super skilled drummer who still knows how to sit in the pocket and beat the absolute dog shit out of his drums. Dude is a legend.

Anything from Roots would be great too. My personal favorite is Straighthate due to that nasty main riff, but as I said anything is good. Actually it's funny how my brain still associates morning porridge with that album as it was always on my playlist when I was preparing to go to school LOL.
Soulfly is a band you need to check out too, it's Max Cavalera's project.
The guy who produced this album is named Andy Wallace. Not only did he also produce Slayer's Seasons In The Abyss, Jeff Buckley's Grace, FMN's King For A Day..., & many more, but he engineered & mixed Planet Rock, Walk This Way, Rage' s debut and fucking Nevermind.
That dude doesn't get his flowers nearly enough.

Igor Cavalera, the drummer on this album, was one of the best Thrash Drummers back in the day. He was up there with Dave Lombardo, Gene Hoglan, Charlie Benante, and Gar Samuelson. I actually think Sepultura’s current drummer, Eloy Casagrande, is a bit better though. Some of Igor’s best drumming can be heard on the Beneath The Remains, Arise, and Chaos AD albums. Sepultura really couldn’t do any wrong between 1987 - 1995, then they went Nu Metal in 1996 and they pretty much lost half their audience and they’ve sadly never fully recovered. They’ve attempted some back to form albums that just never hit the mark but for all intents and purposes these days, they’re more of a Hardcore band than they are a Thrash Metal band. Not that that’s a bad thing but for those of us who grew up listening to this band, it’s really been an unfulfilling journey keeping up with them. Still love them and catch them every time they come through on tour but they’re such a different band today than they were in the 80s and early 90s.
