I think in A+Start's video on Banjo's models, he mentioned the devs were trying to sort of emulate the old blocky N64 look, but even back on the N64, Banjo was way more rounded. I guess it's just not what I expect from the design. As well as that, the mouth kind of weirds me out with how long it is, and I just don't really think the "low poly, but not actually"-style works, and that goes for most of the game, not just Banjo. Might just be me, though.
I like the designs as they are. But think the game itself is ugly as sin. I definitely had no problem with their designs in the original teaser trailer we got for the game before it became vehicle related though. I don't really see a similarity to banjos N64 look at all in nuts and bolts, I think they were going for something different stylistically but will have to check out his video. The Artist Mark Flynn I’ve barely played Banjo Kazooie except a few times as a kid at the dentist, but Banjo always felt soft and round to me, like they made a cuddly teddy bear to offset his using a bird like a weapon, lol. Making him and Kazooie contrasting shape-wise is a good idea, but I think the most faithful way to do that would be to let Banjo be round and make Kazooie extra sharp. Highlighting what’s already there works way better in my opinion than morphing, especially with an iconic character. Nuts & Bolts Banjo looks like a man who cuts down trees and drinks beer while normal Banjo looks like a guy who takes care of his garden but gets a little dirty. Very different vibes.

I think the Nuts and Bolts design is actually good, but some of the decisions they took regarding color, textures and such kill it for most people. I think if you take that design and give them bigger, more expressive eyes and get rid of the "hyper realistic" textures, you'd get a pretty good design overall.
I'm honestly sold on everything in their N&B designs except their eyes and Banjo's teeth. Kazooie having sultry femme fatale eyes weirded me out, considering how she's one of those characters that people were actually surprised to find out is a female. Granted most of the folks who played banjo probably did so as preteens and children but still! I do like the overall principle of Banjo being sharp and angular while Kazooie is more rounded though.
I didn't know about Rare's existence until 2017. I do remember seeing Rare Replay on shelves when it launched, but I didn't pay that much attention to it until a got hands-on experience with it at the public library in 2017 (They had an Xbox One in the teen section). The only franchises from Rare's library that I was somewhat familiar with before then (that wasn't Donkey Kong) was Conker's Bad Fur Day (I didn't play this one, I only saw footage of it on TH-cam years ago) and the Viva Pinata TV series.
This video made me realize just how much I love Banjo and Kazooie and how much they mean to me. While I hope we can get another game with that classic look and gameplay, I'm glad we always have those n64 classics. Love your videos and narration as always, Mark
Cheers dude! The original BK game means so much to me, I unfortunately just haven't enjoyed anything else that came from the series. Even Tooie didn't feel right to me. The original will always hold such a strong place in my heart, its the perfect 3D platformer and still holds up insanely.
Long story short it's the nuts-and-bolts version of banjo and kazooie like we all knew from the beginning Obviously it's the superior version of their character designs in every way.

Even tho I was born in the late 2000s and I wasn't able to play any banjo games, I used to watch old banjo kazooie playthroughs on TH-cam and I fell in love with the bear&bird duo and the whole franchise! I was so freaking excited about banjo & kazooie being in smash so I could finally play as him! Banjo is one of my favorite characters and my favorite xbox character (apart from cuphead) I hope we get a new banjo game or get a banjo game ported on switch!

There's some features in the nuts & bolts look that is pretty sweet like banjo's face & build and kazooie's feathers for a mohawk, however, i'd do some changes to banjo's pants since they are too loose and baggy and add a pin to the belt buckle as it's just there floating. I didn't find any of the old renders of Banjo ugly or scady or anything, but his hands always really weirded me out. Like why would a bear have weird gorilla hands instead of fuzzy hands or gloves. But the Smash design pulls out a lot of charm I can't describe except for "Nintendo"/"Mario" vibes and he looks amazing to me, even with the bare bear hands and feet.
I really think the XBox designs are really good with the exception of the ugly eyes that look uncanny as hell. My nitpick with Smash Kazooie is I think the longer head feathers really fit Kazooie's outgoing and loud character.
I absolutely hate the N&B design. Heck, I even like Banjo's far away model from Diddy Kong Racing more which is just 4 tris big. And of course the Smash design is absolutely perfect. I really hope there will be more new Banjo-Kazooie content in the future, like remakes, Banjo-Threeie and Banjo and Kazooie appearing in some more Nintendo games, like Mario Kart, Mario Party, Donkey Kong games, Super Mario games, etc. And for the remakes and Threeie they could release those both on XBOX and Switch. For Banjo-Threeie I want them to make it that it continues after Tooie. In the beginning after Banjo comes out if his house he should say that he had a strange dream about cars. (got the idea from the Banjo-Kazooie: The Hidden Lair romhack) I got some other ideas for it too. And maybe they could remake Nuts & Bolts too. If they would I would like it a teeny bit more because the main things I don't like about it are the character designs/art style and that the concept just doesn't fit for Banjo-Kazooie.

Out of jokes, I played the original games in Project 64 when I was a 5 year old and loved them, I even played with my toys in a similar way the first game played, years passed and I got a Xbox 360 and GH3 with it, cool, but then one day my parents gave me Nuts & Bolts and OH FUCK was I hyped, I didn't know they released a third game and I shat my pants on the spot (not really, but you get the point), I boot up the console and insert the game, it wasn't what I expected but I really liked it, its was pretty fun game, I played the shit out of it and almost 100%-ed the game, built batshit insane vehicles that looked awful but were fast (I was a little kid what did you expect?), I even bought the DLC that came out, overall I loved it, it really deviates from the original games but as a standalone game is fucking rad, as a B&K game it just doesn't fit the gloves, people should play it anyways, it has some sort of weird good charm to it ;)
The Pre Rendered design of the bear and bird from Kazooie and Tooie are the best they've looked. The in game Diddy Kong Racing design is definitely the worst. I don't hate the Nuts and Bolts design. I quite like it, but it's not the best. I do like the Smash design but there are a few things I dont like about Banjo. He looks a bit derpy and sometimes seems to have no teeth. Kazooie looks perfect.
Nuts and Bolts Banjo and Kazooie are totally fine except for those freaky eyes. The eyeballs are too small and the pupils are too big, makes them look lifeless.

I know I sound biased, but their Banjo&Kazooie design was the best. Their Smash designs are not QUITE right. They need some polish if they were used for a hypothetical remake. However, I will say the Smash designs are more tolerable than the rather unappealing design from Nuts & Bolts.
Just some constructive criticism, on the section starting around 4:00 the audio mixing is questionable at best, the music is way too loud and distracting
I absolutely hate the Nuts and Bolts design. It looks like a Tim Burton redesign-with Banjo resembling Frankenstein or undead creature more than the nostalgic N64 design. They simply look perfect for Smash Ultimate’s design. They are updated and new looking, yet they maintain their nostalgia.
Not to sound rude...but I’m more of a fan of the older version of your videos thumbnails. To me; they felt more at home with the premise of the show: an average Joe comparing and contrasting a specific character’s different designs over the years and explaining what does and doesn’t work for each of them.
That's fair enough! I don't think you're being rude, you're just offering feedback. From my perspective, what you say makes sense and was basically what the idea was. But that template I found worked really well at times and not very well at others. Sometimes the resolutions of the character renders don't fit and you end up with way too many colours going on. Also couldn't make it look good for the Dante ep as much as I tried... So I figured I would try something new and see how the views end up! It's made the process a bit funner again for me as I'd missed designing thumbnails so I'm keen to try this style out for a while 😊

I didn't find any of the old renders of Banjo ugly or scady or anything, but his hands always really weirded me out. Like why would a bear have weird gorilla hands instead of fuzzy hands or gloves. But the Smash design pulls out a lot of charm I can't describe except for "Nintendo"/"Mario" vibes and he looks amazing to me, even with the bare bear hands and feet.
I really think the XBox designs are really good with the exception of the ugly eyes that look uncanny as hell.
My nitpick with Smash Kazooie is I think the longer head feathers really fit Kazooie's outgoing and loud character.

Only reason why Banjo’s design was blocky in the 1st place was that Rare went for the *”Upscaled Blocky models”* design.

I absolutely hate the N&B design. Heck, I even like Banjo's far away model from Diddy Kong Racing more which is just 4 tris big. And of course the Smash design is absolutely perfect. I really hope there will be more new Banjo-Kazooie content in the future, like remakes, Banjo-Threeie and Banjo and Kazooie appearing in some more Nintendo games, like Mario Kart, Mario Party, Donkey Kong games, Super Mario games, etc. And for the remakes and Threeie they could release those both on XBOX and Switch. For Banjo-Threeie I want them to make it that it continues after Tooie. In the beginning after Banjo comes out if his house he should say that he had a strange dream about cars. (got the idea from the Banjo-Kazooie: The Hidden Lair romhack) I got some other ideas for it too. And maybe they could remake Nuts & Bolts too. If they would I would like it a teeny bit more because the main things I don't like about it are the character designs/art style and that the concept just doesn't fit for Banjo-Kazooie.

Nuts & Bolts Banjo looks like he could be called Nick...
Out of jokes, I played the original games in Project 64 when I was a 5 year old and loved them, I even played with my toys in a similar way the first game played, years passed and I got a Xbox 360 and GH3 with it, cool, but then one day my parents gave me Nuts & Bolts and OH FUCK was I hyped, I didn't know they released a third game and I shat my pants on the spot (not really, but you get the point), I boot up the console and insert the game, it wasn't what I expected but I really liked it, its was pretty fun game, I played the shit out of it and almost 100%-ed the game, built batshit insane vehicles that looked awful but were fast (I was a little kid what did you expect?), I even bought the DLC that came out, overall I loved it, it really deviates from the original games but as a standalone game is fucking rad, as a B&K game it just doesn't fit the gloves, people should play it anyways, it has some sort of weird good charm to it ;)

The Pre Rendered design of the bear and bird from Kazooie and Tooie are the best they've looked.
The in game Diddy Kong Racing design is definitely the worst.
I don't hate the Nuts and Bolts design. I quite like it, but it's not the best.
I do like the Smash design but there are a few things I dont like about Banjo. He looks a bit derpy and sometimes seems to have no teeth. Kazooie looks perfect.

Nuts and Bolts Banjo and Kazooie are totally fine except for those freaky eyes. The eyeballs are too small and the pupils are too big, makes them look lifeless.

I know I sound biased, but their Banjo&Kazooie design was the best. Their Smash designs are not QUITE right. They need some polish if they were used for a hypothetical remake.
However, I will say the Smash designs are more tolerable than the rather unappealing design from Nuts & Bolts.
Just some constructive criticism, on the section starting around 4:00 the audio mixing is questionable at best, the music is way too loud and distracting

They simply look perfect for Smash Ultimate’s design. They are updated and new looking, yet they maintain their nostalgia.

Not to sound rude...but I’m more of a fan of the older version of your videos thumbnails. To me; they felt more at home with the premise of the show: an average Joe comparing and contrasting a specific character’s different designs over the years and explaining what does and doesn’t work for each of them.
That's fair enough! I don't think you're being rude, you're just offering feedback.
From my perspective, what you say makes sense and was basically what the idea was. But that template I found worked really well at times and not very well at others. Sometimes the resolutions of the character renders don't fit and you end up with way too many colours going on. Also couldn't make it look good for the Dante ep as much as I tried... So I figured I would try something new and see how the views end up! It's made the process a bit funner again for me as I'd missed designing thumbnails so I'm keen to try this style out for a while 😊
