This song was supposedly inspired by Suicide, the early 1980's rock duo (Alan Vega & Martin Rev). I can see the influence now that I've heard Bruce play it solo.
This is a song off the Nebraska album. He is singing about a guy who took off with his girlfriend on a killing spree in Nebraska. True story. You really need to listen to the whole album to get it, hope this helps. ~peace
@SuzzyStohelit but you talking about "nebraska" the song, not "state trooper".. nebraska is inspired by a film with martin sheen called "badlands" that´s based on true story, i read.
This song NEVER gets old. Simple. Haunting. Powerful. I love it.

Awesome vocal performance!!!!
crazy dudes man..Vega was nuts!! I'd like to know what I would have thought seeing them in 1980. How I would have reacted.
very true. Check the version of dream baby dream played by Springsteen at the Seeger Session tour. It's somewhere on youtube.
If you listen, he's saying mr. state trooper please don't stop me. Obviously its a song about running away from the law

Nebraska was based on true story, which happened in 1958; look up for Charles Starkweather
@dococolo thank you, I was a bit confused there, now I have a movie to watch, do you know the year? I should be able to find it.
@SgtPep5150 ~you got it.
he's saying 'please don't stop me' - like it's a threat... (ie. I got nothin' to loose if you do stop me - "bet you got a pretty wife"... dark)
Yeah, it's quite obvious actually.The song is built the same way Suicide songs are built.
