  • The key to 5 gallon containers is not over planting them and making sure you keep them fed and watered. Container soil with 50% organic matter really helps with moisture. Here are mature vegetable plants of Kale, Peas, Chard, Lettuces and a growing determinate tomato. It will give you a good idea of what can grow in 5 gallon containers.

    Thank you for this video, I bought 5 gallon pail's and plan on planting peas- I have one patio tomato growing in a 5 gallon pail on my deck for my toddler. I did not know about the lime, so I will definitely pick some of that up to add to them. I also did not have room for kale in my garden, so this is perfect :-) thanks ever so much again.

    I lòve your videos! You explain everything very well and your audio and video is always on the money. I am extending my Earth Garden this year and have created a container garden on my deck which gets about 10 hours of good sun. I have learned much from these videos with regards to determinate tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets. My indertiminate jet star tomatoes are in my Earth Garden and I plant these yearly and truly feel they are the most delicious tomato ever to touch my lips but after 15 years of only these, I thought it might be fun to experimented with determinates. So far, so good!
    Please keep the great videos coming!

    Gary, you have good gardening videos. They are informative and visually interesting. Showing the plants and their setting is much better than just talking heads, plus you have a good voice for narrating. Thanks for not lecturing us hobby gardeners about the "organic gardening religion" ,which can be intimidating. I have found most gardeners have a little OCD in their makeup, but you keep your videos light and fun. How about a video on good flowers to grow in the garden alongside the vegetables?!

    Great video, Gary. i noticed that you used some rope to tie the tomato stem to a stake. i wanted to share with you that i use "tomato clips" they are made of plastic and snap on and off fairly easily. they are called - "Tomato Plant Support Clips" - i bought mine off Ebay. they are adjustable and leave plenty of room between the stem and the stake. i bought 500 of them for $16. thank you for the great information on the 5 gallon containers.

    Another great video..I do exclusively container growing including Swiss Chard as yourself.. Most folks who see my garden are first drawn to the Chard, because they are really beautiful colourful plants, but they have no idea what it is..... I grow Bright Lights and Ruby Red varieties.. I picked up plastic 1/2 whiskey barrels at Lowes and use these... I also use these barrels to grow the smaller leaf variety Georgia collard greens and have had great success.. You are definitely spot on regarding keeping up with fertilization..

    Any special consideration for overwintering? I'm concerned about the soil freezing and cracking buckets. Due to freezing and sun, what's your estimate of the life of a bucket? I stared 10 this year as a trial. Do you have to add compost yearly or amend other than weekly feedings? That's again for sharing Gary, this is good stuff.

    A raised bed question. I live in Red Wing, MN. My backyard is built into the side of a bluff, limestone and clay soil mainly. I do have some terraced level areas and want to add some raised beds. should I remove some of the soil I have, 2-4" at best, and replace with good soil before adding the raised beds? We have free compost at our waste campus so i could get that for free. Not the best quality so should I add something to that. Or am I overthinking and just put up the raised bed at a higher height. thanks and love all your videos.

Do you put 2-3 seeds in each little hole as insurance in case one seed doesnlt germinate? After those get a little big, do you then transfer them to styrofoam cups and then when thosefinally get large enough, do you move them to their final home - the 5 gallon pot? Thank you once again.

    Zucchini plants take up so much precious space in garden.. like 9 square feet. That's most of my 4' x 4' bed! I wonder how a zucchini plant would fair in a 5 gallon bucket? That way I can use little soil and little materials to hold the beast and just let it sprawl out of the bucket suspended above the lawn/wood chips.

    Hi Gary! Hope all is well. I just planted 6 indeterminate tomato plants in 15 Gallon containers, and 1 in a 5 gallon container (Oregon Spruce). I totally forgot to put 1-2 tbsp of lime in the containers. I think I put it in for the first one or two that I planted. And I only put Epsom salt in the first one or two also. Because when I was planting the containers of Epsom and Lime were sitting somewhere else other than the granular fertilizer and the worm castings!!
    After I planted the seedlings, which were all close to 1 foot or maybe a bit taller, I sprayed them with aspirin and epsom salt on the leaves and stem(within the fist week of planting them).
    But what should I do regarding the lime. Should I scratch 1-2 tablespoons into the surface next time I water?
    Same with my pepper plants. I planted two pepper plants in a 5 gallon container (now I've heard from the ACE garden center guy that I should use a 5 gallon or larger for each pepper, but you said 5 gallon is OK for two!!), and I didn't put in lime or epsom salt.
    I'm loving your new series this year. Thanks for all your work. This year my garden will be so much better than last year because of everything I learned from you last year. My garden did quite well over the winter her in Oakland. Thank you :) And I bought some seeds from you that I'm germinating now. Hoping the Tiny Tim bare fruit!!
    Thanks in advance.
    Debby from Oakland :)

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can sprinkle some on the surface and just let watering wash it down. I have grown 2 pepper in a 5 gallon with success. Really a matter of watering. If you can stay up on it 5 gallon is fine. So glad you are finding success and thanks for buying the Tiny Tims!

      Thank you for getting back to me. I can stay on top of my watering. However, I don't have drip irrigation , and I'm heading back to Boston for 10 days end of August. Do you use a drip irrigation system? Any suggestions? Could you do a video on how to set one up? I think I need one!
      So, I actually bought 7 seed packets.
      3 types of Summer squash that I'll plant now since it was too late when I got them last fall;
      1 Breakfast radish;
      1 Southern Collards, which did really really well in my planter boxes, not so well in 5 gallon container, but I may have started that one a bit late in the fall;
      1 white stem bok choy, which I tried to grow but the slugs kept eating on the seedlings in the 4 inch pots while waiting to be planted (I'll do it differently this year); Suggestions welcome...
      and 1 perpetual chard, which I'm still harvesting( which is doing much better a couple weeks after I put worn castings around them- I recently added worm castings around all my plants, and what a HUGE Diff with all my plants in just a few days. I plan on planting more perpetual chard.
      It's just getting warm here in Oakland, and stays warm until October, so I have a good 5 months get some of your seeds going again. I germinate in paper towels, then just transplant into some potting soil once they get a shoot about an inch long. Worked pretty well last year. I'm open to suggestions.
      What do you think about the preformed sprouting bricks?
      I'm also creating a perpetual food forest with perennial vegetables.
      I have two purple tree collards and one D'Aubergen Kale. I plan on getting a few more of each.
      I also have malabar spinach, Orach, New Zealand spinach, amaranth. All of which I plan on adding more perennial greens to. We'll see how they grow. It's all very young!
      Thanks again for everything :)
      Debby
