All Killer Mike is saying is, don't create excuses for yourself. You can be just as great in public schools as you can be in private schools, it starts with self. That's it.
@@johnnyweeks3669 Nah, I learnt things in private school, at 8 years old that some people I met in life weren't exposed to until later in high school, college or even after that, if you go to private school and have legit parents, the possibilities are endless. On behalf of public school teachers, thank you for standing up for us. Envy is correct about us being under resourced and overworked, but most of us go above and beyond because of that. We don't allow it to hinder us. We tap into our creativity and create the best damn lesson plans that a child could experience. Much Peace and Strength to my fellow educators!
I rather hear two men arguing about the education for our youth instead of who got the biggest ass on IG. Great interview breakfast club. Mike is a legend in the city and he get mad respect. None of us can do it alone.
Envy is 100% WRONG! Most people do NOT want to be millionaires. MOst people want to do exactly what Killer Mike said...comfortable, below the debt line, able to pay their bills on time, and leave something for their children once they pass. That's it. $90,000 a year would keep me happy. Not everyone enjoys hustling, most people like to know what money is coming in and what to expect. Trust me, most people don't have the entrepreneurial mindset....a low percentage of people. Self pride, taking accountability for one's self actions, and making the most of your situations is how you succeed. Period. You don't need to go to Private school to do that.
@Beatrice Pierre $90,000 a year is around minimum wage in places like San Francisco. I question if Killer Mike has truly re-adapted his money with the knowledge his Grandparents bestowed upon him. Living in tune with nature as you reap it's benefits, which can easily be multiplied with today's technology. The ability to harness nature for oneself is the apex point of liberty for culture. One that would allow freedom to live without constraint of false currency.
@E. P. Right, sidechick and strippers won't be in the Will. A man is responsible to his wife. This is why Homosexual people are fighting so hard for marriage.
Envy totally missed the point Killer Mike was making. One rule of the Four Agreements: it ain’t personal Envy. Killer talking to regular folks, not rich folks. Take pride and ownership in self not your private school education.
Maly Roberts I have 6 siblings my dad worked his ass off as a public BD school teacher in Maywood, IL to send us all to private grade school and high school. Real parents sacrifice to get their kids the best education possible (see:Asians) NOT SAY, “well I pay taxes so I’m going to send my kid(s) to a shit public school.” Killer Mike sounded like a complete idiot for that.
I am not a fan of Envy or the breakfast club, but Envy had a point. Most of the teachers are white women and the curriculum is set around little white girls. Mike completely deflected on that one.
@@derrickvineyard7032 All the public schools he mentioned were good public schools. Take time to listen. He didn't say send your kid to a "shit public school." He said that there are schools out there that are good and public and send your children to that instead of making your kids endure all kind of crap with no return on investment.
As a white guy (hopefully an ally) I'm trying to watch and learn from more minority voices activelyand seek them out. Been a fan of RTJ since inception. I absolutely hope the internet is the harbinger of good people and ideas together. At least get more conversations started. Build your communities everybody!
Most people WON'T be millionaires anyway. I know it's the in thing to talk about getting there but America in particular isn't set up like that. Forbes out out a study that 65% of the HAVES were BORN in it. You'd think people would know that but no. People really think that most of the country is just lazy vs the design that is in place. We have the exceptions and the rule, yet people all think they'll be the exceptions. I guess you have to tell yourself something but when they get done, most people will not be rich. I dunno how much more proof we need to believe it.
When Mike went off on Envy I had to steady myself. That was the most powerful display of black education. Envy bought into the over there is better philosophy. No hunny over here is better when we work to make it so. You buying properties build a school for the future and educate your grandchildren.
I completely understand what Killer Mike is saying. You can’t move to improve. I went to a private school, black charter school, predominant white schools, and minority serving schools, and then a HBCU and no matter where I went I excelled. It started at home! And to mention I did the best and felt the best when I wasn’t in a hostile environment. I’m glad that I went to school with people like me until I was 12 bc I had a sense of self. Killer Mike hit it right on the mark!!
Whew Chile, as a black male educator with two degrees...This interview has me triggered...I’ve taught in public, private, charter. Killer mike spoke no lies, public schools are and have the ability to be the BEST institutions for our children but we give up on them. I’ve taught kids who lack pride and confidence because they knew society viewed their school as less than. So they cultivate a less than mentality, they come to school and act out because they’re afraid to be challenged by people who they think don’t care about them. Then we have turn over because the teachers can’t handle them, then they have to hire anybody who is willing to stay more than a few months...It’s the mentality and lack of support NOT the schools themselves..
I 100% feel u brother but to Envys point, I myself went to the school he was referring to (Andrew Jackson HS in Jamaica Queens) and those metal detectors made us feel like criminals as soon as we touched the door. Telling 13 year olds to take your belts and shoes off everyday is wild. But in all I lean on Killer Mikes train of thought.
@@nandawalker9660 I'd argue we need more committed parents. I'm a teacher, raging black, living on the other side of the country down in Southern California. But my school district (San Bernardino City Unified) is in the poorest city of its size IN THE UNITED STATES. And it's not hard to tell which kids have a shot. They're the ones with parents showing up not to fight with the school, the teachers, the administrators, but embarrassed because their kids are being disrespectful. Kinda how it used to be growing up. If the parents aren't enforcing things at home in terms of prioritizing education, seeking out help if they aren't able to (a common problem)...kids aren't stupid. The balance of power is in their favor in today's education system. So if parents aren't doing their job, what's a teacher going to say to them. I'm as committed as anyone, but my mentor was a big burly black man with a doctorate named Joe Parks. And he taught us 12 years ago that no matter the teacher, in a class of 30, there are three students that excel regardless of what you do, and there are three students that fail no matter what you do. You are defined by the 24 students in between. And it's true. People wanna get mad, but it's true. I can't be more committed to your future than you are. Or your parent(s) are. The joy of what I do is seeing the kids who just needed someone to believe in them, grow. But they wanted more, they just didn't know how to get it.

For anyone who didn't grow up in Atlanta or has never been to the A, it is completely different not growing up and not seeing YOUR people doing well. For that reason I agree with Envy. My wife is from Atlanta and went to Mays and out of her crew 1 is an MD, 1 PhD, on a Nurse, and 1 a pharmacist. Her 3 best friends not from ATL have PhDs and her brother is a lobbyist. Seeing black people own businesses and drive Benz and Bentleys on a common occurrence goes a long way. I never saw that growing up in Chicago.

We literally have to raise these kids in the classroom, I have been teaching SENIORS who read at a 5th grade level and have had them go up 7-8 grade levels in literacy. If you feel public school teachers are bad then you should take the INITIATIVE to get that teacher fired, vote in a new school board or take the initiative to make sure your child comprehends the subject matter to the fullest extent. Taking students from public schools does NOTHING but worsen the school due to lack of funding. My parents being a big part of your kids education, i went to a private school k-2 but when i moved, i was forced to go to a public school, my parents were scared that i wouldn't learn as much at a public school, so they went over school and homework with me to make sure i was on point and i would do well in class. King King first you don’t know me or what I stand for my guy. I’m all for my people and understand how my ancestors was oppressed in a country they practically built. I’m aware of all of this, but if you watched the whole interview you’ll see that he’s talking about how the black community went from being good to bad. He’s talking about how businesses were closed, not because a white person shut it down, but because after the owner passed they person whom they left it to sold it instead of keeping it running. It’s no secret that the system isn’t made for most people like myself to be successful but it’s not impossible either. If we take some responsibility instead of always blaming the white people for everything maybe we can have more places like Harlem during the Harlem Renaissance, where black owned businesses were everywhere. Killer Mike saying just cause they want you to live like this doesn’t mean you have to. No one is saying look past 400 years of slavery, Jim Crow, or how we’re still treated today in America. He is simply saying it’s up to us to open more black owned businesses and put our money in black banks and support more black owned businesses. How many black owned businesses do you shop at? How much money do you have in a savings account at a black owned bank? How often do you tear down your own people? How did you do in school? How did you help the young brother next to you that was struggling in class when he needed it? Just stuff that a lot of people don’t look at. When we stop being so closed minded and expand our way of thinking maybe you’ll get the points that were being made my guy.

What DJ envy dont understand is, if every black person with money moved back the school system would be better. School systems are determined by neighborhood income.
No, not really. A poor private school is better than a rich public school. People don't understand why public schools suck, they think it's just money. But the fact is that anytime something is "public", you have less control over it, than when it's private. This is why public bathrooms are often dirtier than private bathrooms.
Exactly. Public School systems are funded by property taxes. The higher the property tax, the better the school system. Imagine If everyone bought property within our undeveloped communities and flipped it. ✨

@@jeviosoorishas181 Right, people believe if public schools got more funding and better resources than the kids would be better educated. That's not entirely true. @SlyiLaMusic Right. It's not the parents job or the communities job to make sure a public school functions on an acceptable level. The government cuts funding, food becomes shit, teachers begin to have to buy supplies for their students with their OWN money, teachers quit, gets replaced with teachers that are unmotivated, curriculums get cut because of understaffing. It's no coincidence. Yeah public schools will give you a good socioeconomic cultural enrichment, but it's FACTS that private schools will always be better equipped to bring their students into the real world with a running start. That's just reality.

@Tripleblade 82 I get where Mike is coming from. Public schools reflect the wealth of the communities they serve. So if you want Black communities that exist because of segregation and slavery to come out of a poverty trap you need the moneyed class of that community to reinvest in their communities and not get out of it. It's very akin to protectionism and the idea behind it. On a level playing field, free trade is THE best way to go. But it is NOT a level playing field and when after years of protectionism the countries that have all the wealth start talking about opening up trade with the ones that have none, the latter can't just open their markets to be drained. They need to build up their own base and make it so they are competent on the world stage. Analogy works eh?

Ryan James yeaahh u made me understand what I was try articulate to myself better...
I agree, $90,000 a year to many would feel like millions. Look at these rappers.
Ryan James They are limiting themselves. You just settle.
My parents said this ALL the time. Just wanted to not have to worry about money, not have debt and have something to leave their kids.
' I married an anchor and I'm responsible to her' A beautiful Thing!

Real parents sacrifice to get their kids the best education possible (see:Asians) NOT SAY, “well I pay taxes so I’m going to send my kid(s) to a shit public school.”
Killer Mike sounded like a complete idiot for that.
I am not a fan of Envy or the breakfast club, but Envy had a point. Most of the teachers are white women and the curriculum is set around little white girls. Mike completely deflected on that one.
@@derrickvineyard7032 All the public schools he mentioned were good public schools. Take time to listen. He didn't say send your kid to a "shit public school." Whew Chile, as a black male educator with two degrees...This interview has me triggered...I’ve taught in public, private, charter.

We needs more passionate and understanding teachers
You're right. Rules without relationship equal rebellion.

@@johnjohn0, well my apologies, and i do agree to some extent but some areas are so tore, that never recovered but you do prove a good point about family.
*Public vs Private but it's really those two vs Parents*
I think the biggest point that Killer Mike made that went over Envy head was, you can learn a lot in school, but much more comes from your family who pushes you to want to be the best and do better. My parents being a big part of your kids education, i went to a private school k-2 but when i moved, i was forced to go to a public school, my parents were scared that i wouldn't learn as much at a public school, so they went over school and homework with me to make sure i was on point and i would do well in class. Also, my mom came up to school at random times to talk to my teacher to make sure i was doing what i need to and also brought me home extra work! It sucked at the time but my mom & dad are the reason i did receive two degrees. So I'm thankful!

I personally was already on a mission to using it less & less.
Regardless, its historical connotation WAS & IS to make us feel inferior. Less than dirt. Less than garbage.
Hence, why I am eradicating that word from my vocab.

This interview is dope. Killer Mike pouring out facts and he not blaming white people for everything that goes on in the black community. We have to take more responsibility for what goes on in our communities and when we do that we’ll be able to build and make it great again.

Plz check out Bro James Wilson book THE COLLEGE TRAP. TH-camr J Wilson. His book will save people a bunch of time and money
Protect Killer Mike at all costs. This was filling!
We in Atl own guns. lots of them. Mike has plenty of them himself.

What DJ envy dont understand is, if every black person with money moved back the school system would be better. School systems are determined by neighborhood income.
FOH....you not gone live in the projects, get money to move out but stay there so the school system will be better.
dallashoodboss nobody said live in the projects all poor blacks don’t live in projects. Most projects have been torn down as well. Before segregation working class blacks and rich blacks lived in the same neighborhood
@@jeviosoorishas181 Right, people believe if public schools got more funding and better resources than the kids would be better educated. That's not entirely true. A lot of children that come from low income neighborhoods have problems at home that translate into how they behave at school. On top of the fact most things govt funded usually aren't the most well ran because the non incentive to make changes.
He burned envy on that school topic. But both made good points
Envy made a good point !? new year I guess
I'm with Envy on that topic
@SlyiLaMusic Right. It's not the parents job or the communities job to make sure a public school functions on an acceptable level. The government cuts funding, food becomes shit, teachers begin to have to buy supplies for their students with their OWN money, teachers quit, gets replaced with teachers that are unmotivated, curriculums get cut because of understaffing. It's no coincidence. Yeah public schools will give you a good socioeconomic cultural enrichment, but it's FACTS that private schools will always be better equipped to bring their students into the real world with a running start. That's just reality.
We can’t pretend like many of our public schools are not educating children and aren’t dangerous.
No he did not.
We need more Killer Mike interviews Breakfast club!! One every month! Make it happen

🙋♀️
Envy totally threw public school teachers under the bus and he missed the point about black children being put in hostile environment.
No he didn't. And what does Charlamagnes mom have to do with anything? Does she teach at every school in the nation? We don't even know if she was a good teacher herself!
