I think you got it exactly right, I've been reading sports articles and looking at it myself. It's a shame, I think also if they are really valuable to keep, I would think they would do anything to keep them.

Past: Build your team with the best 18 year olds you can recruit who have never played college football
Current: Build your team with the best 20 year olds (or older) who have already played at a high level in lower conferences of college football and are ready to make an immediate impact on an SEC team

I have always been of the opinion that High School recruits should make up 75-80 percent of your roster and back fill in the transfer portal. However, seeing this year that 5 or 6 of our freshman from last cycle have transfered out to other places it makes you wonder. Now, we've been blessed by the portal as well as had pieces taken away so I'm not saying we need to abolish the portal. The NCAA needed to set boundaries when NIL was first introduced, them not doing so has made the idea of free agency every 6 months a possibility.
I mean shoot, take for example the Oregon QB that was enrolled for a month and then transfered back out to Cal (who he originally committed to). There are no laws or guidelines, one could argue that no a day's maybe High School recruiting isn't as important as it used to be. There's no guarantee you'll get kids for a year let alone 3-4.

I think it def matters but I think it really depends on the kid... You will have kids that understand that depending on your development PRIOR to coming to college, will determine whether you see the field or not as a freshman. If you come in physically ready AND you pick things up quickly you will play. Some of the lineman MAY understand this better than skill guys (on both sides of the ball).. the biggest thing to me is that you have to have a plan and culture in place to support and make this new ideology work. So far so good...

You are always going to upgrade your talent whenever possible, as much as possible. Cream rises to the top and the best will play.
