  • Fascinating changes in just eight weeks of spring. See my advice for maintaining the garden weed and pest free, quite simply.
No dig, no fertilisers or slug pellets. I weed often yet very little. And cut the grass edges, the hedges
This is the video of 8 weeks earlier, planting on 20th March.

My best carrots every year are planted between my onions. I sow the seeds in early June and by the time I pull out the onions, the carrots have plenty of space to grow. It is a very bountiful part of my garden. I plant 300 onions, then I get fresh carrots from Sept to march. I am in Pacific northwest zone 7.

I'm always so happy when there's a new video! Let me tell you, Charles, your no dig approach has me producing enough food for myself for a year, with very little "work"! So thankful I found your channel 5 years ago before I started gardening in my new yard! This method is so great and since there is no damage to the underlying ground, it's easy to rearrange where my gardens are and to build new ones, year after year. I have never been so successful in my gardening endeavours before. Thank you so much!

Our beets usually are disappointing. Carrots are hit and miss. I try to keep them watered well, but wonder if it’s a boron issue. Too cheap to get soil test so will try to rig up irrigation and do a test. I believe the nutrients are covered but if they run on dry side I suppose they can’t take it up. Our springs seem to be too hot.
With in ground rows it helps to dig a 3-4” trench around edge to prevent lawn from creeping in.

I have a soft spot for dandelions because I have so few early flowers in my garden right now, so this year I kind of left some and dead-headed & thinned them like I would a garden flower. I learned man do they make excellent slug habitat! Something about the way that basal rosette hugs the ground, completely blocking out light and making it super wet underneath; I swear I found a slug under every single one I removed this year! And the slugs love to crawl up the stems at night to eat the flowers. It seems hard (especially in places where this is a native wildflower) to balance habitat vs pest harborage 😢.

@7:28 Caught you digging! Just kidding hahaha Have you ever tried seeding your carrots with onion seeds as a form or pest control actually pest prevention? If not try a small test plot and you will be amazed. I have tried 60/40 carrot to onion ratio that worked better for productivity then a 50/50 So on trial right now is a 70/30 ratio I used a mix of red onions white onion and spring onions Got a substantial crop of Carrots in an area that is nortorios for carrot fly as well as tons of pickling sized onions. We are not allowed to use any pesticides on the Farm as there are Bee Hives and its 100% Organic

Roma withheld winds. Two things I'd like to share with you Charles.
1.) I was watching tomato site. On indeterminant varieties, depending on conditions like spacing he does not remove suckers and cuts back the top that won't get ripe tomatoes before end of season.

We got a brutal hailstorm several days after our official last frost date. We haven't had frost in weeks, otherwise, but nights are just now hitting 50°F nightly. The hail storm mowed down any perennials in its path. The only veggies planted in early spring had cages and row covers, so they had no damage. But my beautiful irises, aliums, and huge poppy buds... decapitated! The hollyhocks were obliterated but they will come back. Half of my apple and all the peach buds were blasted away.
Most folks wait to plant from Mother's day onward, but I am glad I decided to at least wait to plant my summer veggies. Huge disappointment, but what can one do... it's mother nature. 🤷‍♀️

Edging shears are great and we used them at all our clients gardens after mowing for a smart finish.
However we established something like a ditch in the soil of the beds and birders next to the grass, so grass grew out kind of sideways, and you didn’t cut into soil with the edging shears. Then all we had to do was zoom round with a hoe after to lose the clippings in the soil.

Ive got lots of spare sungold tomatoes. When my peas finish cropping im gonna plant them outside along a wall which gives lots of heat back when the sun goes down. Its quite shelterd and apperently more resistant to blight being outside. Although i dont think ive actually ever suffered from tomatoe blight. Im growing lots of salad leaves. My basil has been disappointing and the aphids have eating it mostly. My allotment is looking good. Im holding back planting anymore seed till ive planted all my squash curcubits out. Which i have done now. Ive sown more sunflowers and really want some january king 3 plants so need to plant some of them. I wonder if any of my all year round cauliflowers will produce and my brussels are already 2 foot high :)

Love to see the small garden progress, alas the slug problem here prevents me from growing certain veg outside but my NO DIG poly tunnel is now producing wonderful harvests of broad beans, peas, lettuce onions, and strawberries so thank you for all your inspiration.

Hi Charles, go to your nearby sheep farmer and ask for some fleece after they shear the sheep... take it and fluff it out a bit and circle pieces around your small starts to keep slugs away... slugs do not want to go over hairy things.... and the sheep wool is biodegradable plus you are helping your sheep farmer put excess sheeps wool to good use!

I had to look up the definition of garden fleece (was imagining sheep fleece covering you plants 😊). We unimaginatively call it row cover here in the USA. Thank you for all you do. Just received your book!

Here in the grim wastelands of the North I've got actual pea pods on the plants (started in the PT in Feb), I planted a whole packet of 3yr old PSB seeds as a test in your 60 modules and every one germinated so I planted them out, 40 odd were taken by the rabbits in the first night. Oddly they left the lettuce and beetroot. Salsify are sprouting haphazardly, Cutworms have taken many plants so far, but I grew plenty to replace them, carrots doing well, as are Caulis and Kohl. First time for Cucamelons and they're very slow after germination for some reason.

Hoops and bird netting held down tight with garden staples work pretty well to keep the critters out of the strawberries 🍓

Re compost , i bought a few bags of peat free New Horizon , and it's horrendous . I mulched my beds and borders with it , and they are all weed infested now , whereas before i spent a few minutes weeding , it's now pretty much full time .

I was rewatching the Small Garden playlist this week and appreciate the latest update. I love to see how everything is growing and also how you deal with any problems that arise. I learn just as much from what hasn’t been working as from the successful plantings. Your videos and books have helped me understand the rhythm of the growing season better. Today I harvested a spring variety of Korean radish and had green bean seedlings ready to plant! They were a little more spicy than the ones I harvested in the fall, probably because of the crazy blast of hot weather last week. A few had started to send up a flower stem. But still made delicious kimchi.

A battery powered weed eater would make quick work of the edges. Unless you don't like things that make noise. Or you could use garden sheep shears.

I live in Rochester NY, across the pond and through the woods from you. I have a squirrel problem, there are way to many of them and the very second i leave lettuce out and uncovered, its gone within hours. They will eat it all. so far my solution is to either always cover all lettuce in mesh, or to kill the squirrels. I will probably do both, someone has to help balance the ecosystem. I wonder what animal pest issue you get over there on the island.

I am grateful not to have squirrels! We have badgers however which love to eat sweetcorn and strawberries! Too big to fit a fence, in a worthwhile way

Couch grass control doesn't work like that. I had to install 6" deep metal borders to keep it out of my beds. Couch grass is really easy to identify, if you dig up a clump and you see young healthy side shoots in the roots, that's it. Normal grass isn't like that, it's just a little clump of roots. If you create a barrier against it you can stop it. It doesn't have to cost money, if you dig a 6" ditch around your beds, the suckers from the grass cannot grow.

    • @CharlesDowding1nodig
      @CharlesDowding1nodig  ปีที่แล้ว

Yes sure, and it's easier plus cheaper to have weed free paths and any keep mown/cut short any edges with couch, vigour thus reduced, v feasible to keep removing the few new entrants

Good job Mr.Dowding. You have been such a blessing to me. Because of your videos i have now converted 90% of my garden to No-dig raised beds. I too put alot of time, thought ,an effort into my composting. U are a great teacher an talented grower. Also, I had an idea.I purchased your 2023 calendar it was a Christmas gift for my girlfriend. I live in Virginia,USA. Maybe you could have an adapted USA version of the calender ( it would include our holidays,an days of significance). Also i have a question. Are all the British calenders set up with Monday being the first day on the far left side? In America Sundays take up that spot. Take care keep up the work.
