Basically any Soviet/Chinese/North Korean tank and helicopter that stayed in its line of sight and range ceased to exist quite soon. I was surprised when I first used thing. “Both antitank and antiair??? Did this thing really exist?”
It's really great in Red Dragon, Canadian mech decks with ADATS are hilarious! First encountered ADATS in Ace Combat 2, so until Red Dragon I loathed it, due to childhood memories of being shot down repeatedly by it...
It showed up earlier in Eugen's game library in _Act of War: Direct Action_ for the US 'Army' faction (the other factions were the Consortium which starts off with cheap, spammable gear, but when it techs up, shows up with _RAILGUNS_ and stealth tanks while TF Talon is basically Ghost Recon with high-mobility, high-firepower equipment) as the second tier of base defense. Pair these up with field bunkers laden with anti-infantry options, and you'll need a lot of artillery to even hope to break through.
It was GE's entry to the DIVAD program, and was rejected for several reasons including 1) uselessness as infantry support, 2) RoF being too insane, and 3) it uses the GAU-8. When I was in high school I had a history teacher for a semester that was a senior technical NCO in the Canadian Army before he decided to go for a "second pension" as a teacher. The details are a bit fuzzy but we spent quite a lot of time chatting about military technology and history, as it was my last class of the day and I had a late bus. I'm not sure of the exact timeframe(though his deployments to Afghanistan and Bosnia pin it as most-likely early 90s/late 80s), but he worked on the ADATS program in Canada in a technical training capacity. His assessment of the system was glowing, even if it apparently warped the aluminum hulls of the M113s they fitted it to thanks to its sheer mass. They used the first laptops in the CAF's training infrastructure for the training as well.
I was posted at the Unit that had the ADATS right as the divestment was finishing up. It's electronics sat in triwal boxes until my MCpl told me to re-tag them so we could finally get rid of them. No, there's no extras carried in the M113's hull, but you better believe an ammo truck was full of them.
I worked on the ADATS in white sands, 1986-88, it worked good enough to shoot the rotor shaft off a UH1 running NOE in the desert at 120 F temps, at 8 clicks. No jet could get away, shot down 10 of them easy peasy. Very very fast missile.
I had never heard of ADATS while growing up. The first time was because of playing a strategy game for the Sega CD called "Third World War" way back in 1994. ADATS was in there. And until you made this video, that was the last time I ever heard of the ADATS system.
I think that the ADATS would be a perfect solution for modern day US Military problems; it would probably be a far less expensive missile today that can perform a wide variety of tasks in adverse conditions. Plus the M1 AGDS has a special place in my heart in the "what if?" Category.

The ADATS used a 30 watt CO2 laser for the guidance laser, PWM for the first 1500 meters of missile flight, during engine burn to control the missile directly, then to create a digital grid aligned with the optical line of site, which was projected in the sky, with a constant size of the grid maintained with zoom projection optics to approx 8000 meters. The missile centered itself during flight after engine burn in the middle of the projected grid in air and ground attack mode, or flew 2 grid locations above center in helicopter mode to fly over trees allowing the missile to engage helicopters partly hidden by cover. The target was not painted by the CO2 laser. A Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) laser was used if requested by the gunner to lase the target for range. Range could also come from the search radar, a command ADATS from another position, or by triangulation between the operator in a external target designater chair and the ADATS unit it self. The missiles laser proximity fuse was 6 meters air mode, or 3 meters helicopter mode, and would be gated to not measure proximity until 100 meters before projected impact range in helicopter mode to ensure vegetation or other visual obstructions would not prematurely set the missile off.

I wonder if the chassis issues were based off of the prototype vehicles on the M3 hull. Photos are pretty rare, but the later trials vehicles had an M3A2-based chassis (ironically really similar to the later AMPV) that had the increased engine power, increased electrical power generation, etc.
A video on what tech trees you would like see included to WT. I am pretty partial to a Latin American TT with Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Peru being the brunt of vehicles.
With rise of drone usage I can see vehicles like ADATS be considered again. Armies need inexpensive front line AA platform against drones and ADATS can fill that role with drone jammer fitted
It would be interesting to see if this program gets restarted and fielded, with the current threat of China on the rise. Even the FIM-92K Stinger is starting to show its age, and its range is rather limited in comparison. I could see Taiwan being interested with its multi-use role.
I was waiting to see if you would talk about Patriot and the new directed energy system that's still being worked on but great information And cool video

We REALLY need to have better air defense, ground based especially, and hopefully one of the few good things that could come out of the war in Ukraine is the DOD getting their ass in gear!
Nasams is already mounted to a HMMWV and to a M113. Just nobody has bought it. The radar is a seperate vehicle.
The US and promising defense programs with a lot of potential that are cancelled. Name a more iconic duo.
I want to live in the alternate reality where the US Army actually picked the best equipment.
Spook, Can you do a video on the M60-2000/120s? Would be cool. Would it have a place in WT as the next progression to the M60A3 or a Premium/EV?
M60AX+SLEP too lol
"How do we upgrade the M60?"
"Just slap a new engine and a M1A1 Abrams turret."
And it was DECENT ENOUGH.
@@nooblangpoo perfection
Edit: would laugh if it unironically had better mobility than the normal M1 base due to having a shorter wheelbase. . . Worse ground pressure though possibly offset by less weight :)
This aged like fine wine
I am a 11B and have spent a lot of time in the 11M role. I briefly considered reclassing to a 14R when it was still an MOS. But that was around the time they decided to remove the M6 from service. I am a big supporter of the M2, I have a deep respect and much love for the platform. Even though it has its issues and its conception was for the lack of a better word "Dubious" The ADATS would have been amazing.
Hey Spooks this is just a suggestion but it would be nice to see another video on a Japanese vehicle?
Bro is just casually using his mouse guided SAMs to swat helicopter atgms out of the sky
Damn man that missile on missile was nuts
its so nice seeing helicopters just disintegrate in the sky even after they try bobbing, weaving, and using flares.
Very cool vehicle. I hadn't heard of this before. Thank you.
The high speed of the ADATS might be able to make it hard to be shot down by Active protection systems.
Can you do a video on the AVRE where you actually use the dozer? If you accept this challenge we will finally have you pegged as a masochist.
I use the dozers somewhat frequently but I haven’t been pegged yet 😭
Phlydaily has a really good video using avre dozer 😁
How about that Sgt York! 😁 I remember good old Jack Anderson trashing that one.
Please do the British Striker next Spook. I dont know how many times I have asked this
My prayers have been answered by the heart of the gods
To quote The Russian Badger: "ADATS means anti dat shit"
Petition for warthunder to set up a team of youtubers to pass new vehicle/mechanic ideas from the community to gaijin
i mean, they have a forum section for that, they ignore it for the most part lol
Funny part is, a lot of content creators have already done that, and they flat out ignored them
@@sharpy3453 new vehicles can take a very long time to model so it may seem like the suggestions are ignored when in reality the vehicle just takes very long to release, not trying to defend gaijin and their shitty business things but the community tends to ignore reality and be overly negative (which im sure doesnt help speed things up)
@@Ferne345 there are suggestions that have been there for like 6 years.
If i was one (it wont happen) i would love the PZ II J or PZ I F. I believe these were used for detonating mines.
Great idea for an event lowtier. I also Have other ideas:
-Fcm36PAK40 - br 3.2 premium
-A7V - br 4.5 event..?
-T-18 (ms-3) - br 1.0 event (po 2m but ground forces, both very ineffective.)
-A32 - br 3.2 event ( t-34 prototype but worse)
-Karl gerat ( limited time event gamemode )
- Grob traktor - krupp - event br 2.0 (funny NbFz but worse)
-MTLS-1G14 - event br. 2.5 (a double barreled light tank that would sit in the US tech tree)
- Flamnpanzer I- battlepass br. 2.9 (flamethrower Shit)
-ebr prototype - premium br 6.7 (an ebr with a Tiny turret housing a 37mm gun. Pt 76 57 and R3 mixed)
The MTLS-1G14 isn't an US design. But it probably would be in the USA Tech tree.
The ebr prototype has a diffirent name, but i forgot it.
Finding information about the T-18 is hard since mostly WOT ms 1 appears
The ebr prototype has an ebr 1954 Hull BTW.
The FCM36PAK40 is a rank 2, probably because an 75mm long barrel sitting at tier 1 firing at (for example) t-26 wouldn't be the Best idea...
MTLS-1G14 would be able to Fire both barrela at ONCE. (pls gajin)
It has 2nd gen thermal sight
Gaijin: I didn't hear that
Do laser beam-riders trigger LWR? I see them advertised as not doing so because of the lower power of the laser compared to SALH guidance, but I also see LWRs that are advertised as capable of detecting beam riders.
having covered the adats, maybe the tunguska could be next?
y e s
Meanwhile ADATS in WarThunder: can't even look upwards, while mig-27s and Kamovs are just dumping shit right over your head, and you have 0 chance of fighting back lol
A video on the Alecto might be fun, or really any low-tier high caliber, low velocity gun
love my dorky meme cannons
Adorkable
I wonder if the chassis issues were based off of the prototype vehicles on the M3 hull. Photos are pretty rare, but the later trials vehicles had an M3A2-based chassis (ironically really similar to the later AMPV) that had the increased engine power, increased electrical power generation, etc.
Part 8 of asking for 76 Jumbo
Also love ur vids
Great video, already watched it 8 times already. 👍
I'm gonna start calling this thing "Linebacker", like it was meant to be.
A video on what tech trees you would like see included to WT. I am pretty partial to a Latin American TT with Brazil, Chile, Argentina and Peru being the brunt of vehicles.
The missile knows where it is at all times
It knows this because it knows where it isnt
With rise of drone usage I can see vehicles like ADATS be considered again. Armies need inexpensive front line AA platform against drones and ADATS can fill that role with drone jammer fitted
It would be interesting to see if this program gets restarted and fielded, with the current threat of China on the rise. Even the FIM-92K Stinger is starting to show its age, and its range is rather limited in comparison. I could see Taiwan being interested with its multi-use role.
As a swede, Im impressed that I got Bofors from your pronunciation.
I like these vids of you explaining the history of a vehicle whilst destroying everyone in gameplay C:
“You know what ADATS stands for, right? Anti-Dat Shit!”
~RussianBadger
I was waiting to see if you would talk about Patriot and the new directed energy system that's still being worked on but great information And cool video
Learning about the ADA feel like when your in a imaginary battle against a kid in school and they go "bUt MiNe CaN dO ThIs To CoUnTeR yOu".
“This vehicle’s launchers can elevate to 85 degrees” THAN ACT LIKE IT, US ADATS!!!
Great video. Keep up the good work
Could you do a video on the SU100Y
I know that you did a video on the is-7 in war thunder recently but it would be cool if you did a video on the is-7 in real life and why it did not enter service or something like that great job on your videos
1980s US finally gets an actual good prototype built:
"Nah scrap it lmao"
Please, make a video diving into the history of the mighty 2S6 Chunguska!
Probably the strongest tank in the game since it just does everything.
Thanks for the lesson😊
Thailand actually acquired 2 units of the ADATS albeit only on stationary platforms that can be readily towed as is. I once saw a picture of it snug tightly on a flatbed of a truck and while its not technically supposed to be used that way, I doubt there is any problem with it firing.
2:34 the missile knows where it is because it doesn't know where the adats isn't
Man, watching all those attack helos fire off flares to avoid a LOS guided missile.... heartbreaking.
Hey Spookston i dont know what you were saying because i was eating chips and only heard crunch noises but hey i loved your game play.
I think this was more of a history lesson then fun.
So adats had 2-gen thermals not 1st gen like in WT?
Was there a bug report on incorrect thermal sight resolution? If I understood some documents correctly, ADATS basically carries around Apache's sensor array
2:35 thank you I never knew that
Could you take a look at the Bradley COMVAT? Seems like a really interesting proposal
ADATS stands for Anti-DAT-Shit, with DAT-Shit being whatever your index finger is pointing at
Knowing how bad M6 Linebacker turned out to be it is incredibly sad that ADATS was canceled.
I think its time for another the state of top tier video
Great vid!
A video with the PTL/WMA/AFT family of vehicles would be entertaining. All of those vehicles can be ridiculous
imagine having all of this tech and being have to use crt monitor that shows how far military tech can leap forward
