    Developed to provide US tank units with adequate protection against Soviet attack helicopters and jets following the failure of the DIVAD program's M247 Sergeant York, the Air Defense Anti-Tank System or ADATS was a revolutionary multi-purpose design. It could effectively engage just about any vehicle out there, and it worked quite well. But if it was so effective, why didn't the Army adopt it?

    The missile knows where it is at all times. It knows this because it knows where it isn't. By subtracting where it is from where it isn't, or where it isn't from where it is (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference, or deviation. The guidance subsystem uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive the missile from a position where it is to a position where it isn't, and arriving at a position where it wasn't, it now is. Consequently, the position where it is, is now the position that it wasn't, and it follows that the position that it was, is now the position that it isn't.

      Pretty much all Canada has for air defence, discounting the air force doing its job and allied long range systems, is two guys in each mech infantry company having 'emergency operational requirement' manpads. Mostly blowpipe/javelin pulled out of storage and given to defence contractors to be fitted a new tube, and sold back at full price. Starstreak and early stingers are floating around aswell. And they just hang out in the air guard hatches with with the air def system sitting next to them. KIts better than what we had when I was is, 'point the c6 up'.

    I play War Thunder a lot but I found out about the existence of ADATS from a game called Wargame: Red Dragon, an RTS strategy game. Man was it OP and the range on the missile was insane. Hide it in a forest near an open field, put a supply truck next to it, and watch it go to town. Basically any Soviet/Chinese/North Korean tank and helicopter that stayed in its line of sight and range ceased to exist quite soon. I was surprised when I first used thing. “Both antitank and antiair??? Did this thing really exist?”

      It showed up earlier in Eugen's game library in _Act of War: Direct Action_ for the US 'Army' faction (the other factions were the Consortium which starts off with cheap, spammable gear, but when it techs up, shows up with _RAILGUNS_ and stealth tanks while TF Talon is basically Ghost Recon with high-mobility, high-firepower equipment) as the second tier of base defense. Pair these up with field bunkers laden with anti-infantry options, and you'll need a lot of artillery to even hope to break through.

    • @TheTrueAdept
      @TheTrueAdept ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It was GE's entry to the DIVAD program, and was rejected for several reasons including 1) uselessness as infantry support, 2) RoF being too insane, and 3) it uses the GAU-8.
      Remember, the reason that the Ford contestant was picked was because the US Army troops in Vietnam _LOVED_ the M42 Dusters that they had in the infantry support role. 40mm autocannon HE rounds rip apart infantry formations rather easily. It also used the US's 40mm stockpiles that was around since WW2.
      The problem with Sgt. York was that it needed a _lot_ of work on the FCS and barrels that weren't there because some pennypincher was being an idiot and putting worn barrels into storage...

    • @cnlbenmc

      +@@jakeogroton+ It would probably require the production of new custom turrets as the version in the drawings has a noticeably different profile; being wider to accommodate the twin 6 cell launchers and it has hatches in different locations. Now it might be possible to come up with something that can use existing Abrams turrets for simplified logistics but it wouldn't be quite the same.

    The ADATS used a 30 watt CO2 laser for the guidance laser, PWM for the first 1500 meters of missile flight, during engine burn to control the missile directly, then to create a digital grid aligned with the optical line of site, which was projected in the sky, with a constant size of the grid maintained with zoom projection optics to approx 8000 meters. The missile centered itself during flight after engine burn in the middle of the projected grid in air and ground attack mode, or flew 2 grid locations above center in helicopter mode to fly over trees allowing the missile to engage helicopters partly hidden by cover. The target was not painted by the CO2 laser. A Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) laser was used if requested by the gunner to lase the target for range. Range could also come from the search radar, a command ADATS from another position, or by triangulation between the operator in a external target designater chair and the ADATS unit it self. The missiles laser proximity fuse was 6 meters air mode, or 3 meters helicopter mode, and would be gated to not measure proximity until 100 meters before projected impact range in helicopter mode to ensure vegetation or other visual obstructions would not prematurely set the missile off.

    When I was in high school I had a history teacher for a semester that was a senior technical NCO in the Canadian Army before he decided to go for a "second pension" as a teacher. The details are a bit fuzzy but we spent quite a lot of time chatting about military technology and history, as it was my last class of the day and I had a late bus.
    I'm not sure of the exact timeframe(though his deployments to Afghanistan and Bosnia pin it as most-likely early 90s/late 80s), but he worked on the ADATS program in Canada in a technical training capacity. His assessment of the system was glowing, even if it apparently warped the aluminum hulls of the M113s they fitted it to thanks to its sheer mass. They used the first laptops in the CAF's training infrastructure for the training as well.

    For a world building exercise I was doing a few months ago, I was trying to cram an entire NASAM system (radar and missiles) into a single American vehicle. Think of it like an American TOR system.
    Doing my research, I ended up finding out that the Pentagon conceptualized cramming an anti air vertically launched missiles system into an LVTP-7. Can't find much out there on it, it looks like it might just be sidewinders or smaller. But I can't be the only one thinking about a mobile NASAM system that can roam close to the front to hammer enemy aircraft that get too close before withdrawing.

      There have been a TON of great concepts for mobile and static air defense, sadly the Air Force usually craps all over them so they can be "the one" for the majority of air defense. We REALLY need to have better air defense, ground based especially, and hopefully one of the few good things that could come out of the war in Ukraine is the DOD getting their ass in gear!

    it used an optical Tracker not a radar Tracker but endgame you get a radar lock warning
    The optics could look 90° straight up, in game it's only 85

    • @heathalouf1855
      @heathalouf1855 ปีที่แล้ว

      As the target flew over, the optics could look straight up, but the missile tubes could only go to 85 degrees, then the turret would rotate 180 degrees, and then start dropping the missile tubes as the target range increased. That was the theory, but about half the time the electronics would get confused, and either lock up, or the turret would keep going around in circles with the launch tubes pointing up.

    DIVAD was always dead on arrival. The army issues a requirement (engaging missile armed helicopters at long stand off ranges) that could only have been met by a missile system, then insisted the requirement had to be filled by guns. Then they stuck it on a chassis that absolutely could NOT keep up with Abrams and Bradley equipped armored formations when the other big requirement was that it must be able to keep up with modern armored formations. So even if they fixed the gun feed and radar, it was always going to be a flop.
    And don't forget, DIVAD was to replace the Roland program where the United States took a perfectly good, workable system, cocked it up so it didn't work right, then planted it on a chassis (M109) that also could not keep up with armored formations.
    American Roland of course was the replacement for MIM-72 Chaparral, which was a cheap and hugely mediocre stopgap to replace MIM-46 Mauler which,... you guessed it - was a failure.
    Starting to see a pattern yet?
    The hilarious bit of that last one is they looked at Roland AGAIN in the program which eventually ended up picking ADATS.
    ADATS kept with the U.S. Army penchant for effing up perfectly good LLAD systems. Don't fund the fixes to make it work right, then cancel it. Had the Cold War not ended when it did, I think ADATS would have actually made it into service (probably on a smaller than planned buy) and probably would have been picked up by other NATO and friendly countries. As it was, the failure of the U.S. order and the end of the Cold War (and thus the market for the system) doomed the program and it ended up being a money loser for the parties involved with only 38 production units sold.
