  • Rasheed Wallace argues that AAU basketball is one of the main issues with the new generation of players and that it is actually BAD for development instead of good like many people think. He says it limits players from developing a full skill set.

Then people wondering why players are getting injured a lot. Way too fast paced game. Same thing happening to the youth. 8-10 year olds are playing almost three times the amount of games and hours than legends like MJ, Kobe, Lebron did in their teenage years.

I think the issue moreso than the pace is the lack of effort on defense during the regular season. Defense is an optional thing some teams play now and then. It should be half the fucking game.

I feel like the real disconnect is the lack of understanding between fundamental level basketball and expert level basketball. NBA players can play expert level basketball because they've progressed through all the fundamental stages and the NBA includes entertainment so all the fundamental stuff can be secondary once you hit the pros, understandable, the NBA is a business. But the game of basketball isn't a business and these kids are trying to skip the development stage and act like they're pros when they hit 8th, 9th 10th grade. Unless they goto a high school that grooms kids from youth through travel ball and club teams then they're not getting that fundamental development they need to be complete players, the overall game suffers because of it.
The problem with AAU is it's trying to emulate the pros not just in play style but the infrastructure too, it's a business, tourney organizers are making a killing off bad basketball, youth sports shouldn't be about the money, money has to be made but that shouldn't be the #1 objective.
