Played through it on pc day of release. Didn't have the launch issues you did. I've only ever played it on PlayStation/CRT so the differences really stand out to me. The biggest one for me is the input, doesn't feel right. You're right about inputs held before text boxes. The first time you swing on a branch the tutorial message pops up, if you're holding a direction and advance the text it will cause tombi to jump off the branch when it disappears.
@@SumoGauntlet Glad your Steam copy treated you better than mine did. Also absolutely, that bit on the branch on the way up to Charles was what caught me off the first time.
I’m very happy this game was re-launched. I had it on ps1 after playing it on the demo but lost it over time. At some point I talked about it with a friend and felt that urge of playing it again. I thought of checking it online and the price was over the roof. So I’m glad this happened and only cost me $20 instead of $200 or more
Great vid, may have swayed my choice to pay up if I'd seen it before hand! I bought the pc version early.. I had 2 requiremments - widescreen with a proper aspect ratio (ultrawide would have been ideal for me but I would have settled) and for the load times to have been addressed, especially thinking of the haunted mansion. So I got a refund and went back to playing the ps1 original which I got as a kid, on a free emulator.
That instant accelleration of the grey/white form of Tombi looks absurd. I often decided not to use it in the original because I preferred precission over speed. I would not be able to handle this version at all

Howzit Bluekunai, I watched your other Tombi video, not in full mind you. I know you're a fellow Kiwi, and for some reason this game and that infamous Winter Release Demo really struck a chord with my age group, I'm 36 next month. Met a few other Kiwi Tombi fans since. I was fortunate I hired the original Pal Tombi from the Video source in Whakatane, and clocked it back in 99? All I remember is that I didn't complete all the missions back then, like the mushroom missions etc. But what a ride this game was at the time. Anime was already scarce at the time, I remember playing that demo FMV over and over again, in my mind I thought there was a Tombi Anime or Movie haha. One trip we made when travelling between Tauranga and Auckland, I want to say it was Cambridge or Hamilton!? I can't remember, but Farmers had a copy of Tombi 2 for sale on their shelves, I immediately purchased it. When I got back to Whakatane, I played the crap out of that game, and I believe I got nearly every single achievement, except the upside down buckets at the beginning of the game. Since then I've mastered both games on Emu. You can get the game looking really clean with some of the plugins, as per personal prefrence. My guilty pleasure is the East West Intro 'No Sweat' that use to get me hyped AF as a kid to jam some Tombi. What a time to be a gamer, and how much fun was had within these creative worlds, I loved the cast of characters colour and art styles, it was so fresh and new. The PS1 era was truely the golden age of gaming for us.

Finally got my Switch copy in from Limited Run. Sadly the cartridge was at a 1.0 version which contains all the issues you highlighted in your video. After a patch I started playing and flicking between the remastered and original soundtracks. The biggest issue for me is a weird low crackling sound heard when playing with original soundtrack. Also the Game Over screen is still quiet with the Remastered audio. The patches seemed to resolve some issues but it's disappointing to have a some sticking around. Checking the steam forums people are still having the game failing to launch as of today. With the last patch being in September and LRG being the company they are I don't have high hopes for more incoming fixes. Looking forward to see how Tomba 2 turns out given it's quirks when it comes to emulation. Should be... Interesting.
@@deathgripssan6159 Yeah, they had promised that the final print would include the patches but that turned out to be a lie, especially with how close the patches were to the pre-order window closing. I've been playing this on switch and I have a really weird gripe with it on there. So the game controlls like it's on the PlayStation so the equivalent of the PlayStations X on the switch controller is B, which confused me a little at first cause I was pressing B to confirm and A to cancel in game but I could get used to it. But the main menu and save menu controlled like a switch game so depending on what menu I was in the controls changed and I was back to confirming with A and cancelling with B and it fried my little brain slightly 🤣🤣
@@Helispookter Someone else here had a similar sentiment. I can handle Switch games changing A/B around for games that traditionally had a PlayStation-adjacent control scheme as long as it's consistent, but being interchangeable like that throws me through a loop. I vaguely remember Crash N Sane Trilogy on Switch was the same.
I like the original Tomba soundtrack and what is the point in buying the newer version of the game and playing the newer version of the game if the game will not let you solve the mystery of the mysterious stone tablets? That doesn't make any sense.
@@IamBradofEarth I'd say so. I haven't heard the Switch version suffering from any issues unique to that port and if you're unfamiliar with the original then a lot of the issues I brought up probably won't be as noticable for you.
The game actually runs at a higher resolution you just can't really tell cause the game uses a lot of pre-rendered backgrounds and sprites which can't be upscaled at least not without applying heavy filtering or AI, compare all the 3D objects to the original those are upscaled. 6:50 What happens here I imagine is that there's a bug, the carbon engine doesn't replace the original cutscenes from the game, if you dig around the game files you'll find the ROMs of the original games that you can play in any PS1 emulator, so you can even watch the EU version of the intro with the song "No sweat" played. 10:40 That happens cause what the games does is just mute the ingame music and just plays the remastered OST over the game, it doesn't actually replace the music files. 11:40 There is if you change the game language to anything but English. Overall for 20$ im a tad disappointed with the effort given.
I thought that was a new song for the intro, I still have the original tombi game and the og intro I have and the special editions one were two different songs
you having the tomba version may occur because of you language settings. you can test it with selecting a european language and the title screen changes to tombi for me. even in my playthrough they always referered to me as tombi. i guess they made only the american version for the english language setting. overall i'm glad my steam copy didn't have the launching issue and by playing with the original soundtrack i was able to evade most of the issues. only the last 130 achievement didn't pop up, but it was easily fixed by replaying the final pig with the remastered soundtrack. overall i'm glad i could finally play the whole game after owning just the demo and i'm now awaiting tombi 2. i'm just not sure if the graphics hold up. the second game didn't age as well graphic vise as the first one due to its different style and limited run not even upscaling the resolution kinda makes me skeptic about it
@@USS1SWAT The way localisation works makes sense in that context since importing the scripts from the EU language versions of the game naturally would go by Tombi. I guess it wouldn't make sense for them to have a separate English script when this is using a ROM of the NTSC release as a basis.

Cool! I was looking forward to a video of first impressions of the Special Edition from you. They should have gotten you as a beta tester/quality assurance.
Well, never expected to see another Tombi! video from you after two big retrospectives...
...crazy times we live in, huh?
Eh, I preordered LRG's special physical edition of 1, I'll probably do the same with 2 (even though I DESPISE LRG)... bought the originals for an equivalent of $150, so... might as well go all in.
Thanks for reminding me of my bad life decisions.
My name is Tomba the Mighty
Wow. Finally found someone on TH-cam who actually experienced how Tomba! Special Edition's Steam Port refused to work. (At time of posting, it still doesn't for most people.)
@@DrSmug-yj9ot It's really not something that should be glossed over. Whether your game has a bunch of issues or not, a game you paid for actually being able to start should be the bare minimum.
I started playing this and was trying to work out why the controls felt slightly off. You're definitely right about the acceleration and momentum.
@@floatinghamstick The devil's in the details with ports like these. Sometimes the smallest thing can effect how everything feels.
Really a shame of how there wasn't much fanfare for this but im pretty glad it got re-released, maybe they'll do the second one. It would be great to see the folks that worked at whoppie to make something else, they really cooked on this one.
I await your future releases sir!
Just emulate the original. Got it.
Unless you’re not broke as a joke and have access to PSN.
well I do feel the one with soundtrack starting in the loading screen instead after. makes a big difference. I cant believe trophies are glitched. I ordered my physical game, but it seems I have to wait a year for it, awesome
Oh and the kill music did play for me once which was weird. It was on Phoenix mountain but that was the only time. Definitely a bug.
I would not be able to handle this version at all
Awesome video as always, I can already tell you, the soundtrack playing during loading screens and the wrong tracks being played at some locations has been fixed (On pc that is, the patches need to be greenlit on the consoles)
The pants achievement will be fixed in a future patch.
Also, if you change the in game language to any EU one the game changes to Tombi.
It's still amazing this re-release even happend, and we will get more info on the Tomba 2 re-release next year!
@@Folk1n It's been nice to see the folks in the Discord so actively reporting any anomalies, so hopefully the hitches with this release will get ironed out in time. All the same it's great to see our boy back again.
English is a European language, TWIT
Europe is not E.U.
Just finished the game on PC 100% yesterday. Although there were some minor audio issues and lag on the north half of the haunted mansion, everything other than that was smooth sailing.
Haunted mansion part 1 remastered just slaps, however although I'm not complaining, the purified mansion still played haunted mansion part 1 theme
You too, huh? I think the Dwarf Forest did the same for me
Howzit Bluekunai, I watched your other Tombi video, not in full mind you.
@@Shinreetlegna I love how universal an experience it is that so many people played the demo of Tombi 1 to death because copies of the full game were basically non-existent. I have vague memories of seeing a copy of the first game in a Kmart, but I would've been 5 at the time so I might be imagining it. I ended up getting Tombi 2 as a gift around launch because my dad saw how much I loved playing the demo of the first game.
@@BlueKunai That's awesome, do you have a Facebook page or something? I'd like to share some Tombi artwork I done in the early 2010's etc.
@@Shinreetlegna I don't really do social media anymore, but if you hit up Tomba Club on Twitter or Discord the folks there will be happy to have you. The Discord even has a dedicated art channel
It'll be nice to have a bit of physical paraphernalia when my Whoopie Edition arrives, but it seems clear at this point the original PS1 release will remain the definitive way to play.
Blows my mind Limited Run continues to operate given just about everything they produce comes out sloppy. Just a shame Tomba had to get caught in the mix. At least we got some concept art out of it lol
Everything sold out before I even hear about the pre orders, thanks for letting me know limited run 🤣
I'm just thankful it looks bugged to hell, maybe I'll still find a physical edition for sale down the road
This is the kind review I was expecting :D
Other than FMVs playing twice or the new soundtrack playing on loading screens, it runs good on the steam deck OLED. Hopefully they'll irone out the rest of the details before the physical edition comes out - which can take a really long time
@@ekuseru I've seen some speculate that the PC release may have been made more with the Deck in mind since they're all the same hardware. Differing systems are certainly the biggest hurdle with developing for PC, especially for the poor souls like myself that can't even get the game running 😅
4:33 this glitch is present in the ps1 version
@@SoulConvoy I figured as much, good to have confirmation.
Some bugs that need addressed on the console copy but I had fun with it. It's wild how different 2 is from 1 though.
I have played the PS1 version to death. I can confirm the glitch that shifts you up the pillar from the bottom on stormy mountain was in the original too. So any others that are found are likely not new.
@@SuileaGorma I've played through this game a couple dozen times at this point. There's a pretty good chance I've run into it before and completely forgot about it.
that damn seed of strength in the very edge of the a sharp curve right before you need to speed up to make a jump....
@@Kate_Hanami Truly evil design putting the hardest one right near the end of the track. Save states and rewinds in the eventual re-release are going to be a godsend for that thing.
@@BlueKunai They're ALREADY a godsend here. Made fighting the Storm Pig sooo much easier
Nice video, mate.
I was hoping the PAL/UK version of the intro would at least be a museum piece 😢 I bought and played the Switch version and loved replaying one of my favourite games of all time, but it sure is short when you know what you're doing and where you're going 😅
One thing I found odd was that vitality capped at 8 for a while, then the additional vitality suddenly appeared at some point! Weird glitch.
@@BlueThunder1988 No Sweat 98 is definitely a bit of a guilty pleasure. Tombi is one of my go-to examples of games I wish I could erase from my memory so I could discover everything for the first time again.
Also the vitality cap is increased from 8 to 16 when you get the Golden Bowl from Yan after finding all his hiding places. Not a glitch, just a poorly explained item.
@@BlueKunai ahhh, thanks! I did wonder why it wasn't immediate! Especially as I had to redo some stuff as I wasn't saving as much as I should have been and had a system error going from the lower area of Trick Village to the Jungle! And it happened again, though thankfully I was saving often by that point.
I only played the demo in my teens growing up, always wanted to play it through, then bought it on the PS3, and got further, but ultimately got stuck somewhere. Was debating on picking up this new release, but I'll probably wait until the bugs are ironed out.
Just started playing this through emulation last week since i never finished it as a kid. Was completely unaware there was a rerelease around the corner 😂
They still haven’t updated this game yet with the bugs and trophy issues 🤔 thanks LRG
@@ryujigoda3445 Best faith interpretation is they're trying to compile the fixes they're working on in one big patch. At least I certainly hope that's what's happening considering there's only been one patch to fix some of the music issues, and even that is only on Steam for the time being.
@@BlueKunai we can only hope
@@TheRealDustinNunn Maybe the real mystery of the stone tablets was the friends we made along the way.
If I’ve never played the original and have no way to play the original is this switch version worth picking up?
Holysh ita new video! Dude do medievil!
Ps5 version unfortunately has one trophy bug. Shred threads, won't unlock even after you collect and wear each pair of pants.
I noticed that, hope it gets fixed for the completionist's that play the game.
I want to remake this game, this game was just fucking amazing!!
Very nice review
Man, think I'll hold off on this one. Looks rough.
@@GameFactsSpecial Just another reason I almost never buy games near launch nowadays. Even re-releases of perfectly functional games can be riddled with issues initially.
i wished they added the lost levels :( also was hoping for a little graphical tweak.

Absolutely disrespectful release. It's sad that you can get a better product by sailing the seas...If these companies are just going to do emulation, they either need to charge it a reasonable price, which would be $5-$8 or they need to offer MORE than what the competitor is, and they're doing neither.

I don't think Europe said that actually
Given that Tomba (allegedly) means GRAVE in Italian, it makes sense.
It's so stupid that the release doesn't even support Japanese on a Japanese game. I was going to buy this as a gift for some friends from Japan who love this game but they can't read english.
@@BloodiedHorror Yeah. I saw in passing that Limited Run had a post in relation to this game entirely in Japanese. Not sure what it was about but hopefully some good news for JP fans.
@@BlueKunai Didn't know about that announcement so I went to check it out.
It's basically an apology saying the US and European versions of Tomba came out after the JP one and included fixes. They based the release off that and were going to make a Japanese version but never announced that yet. This reads more like an apology after the fact...
They also boast that it will be the first time these fixed would ever be available in Japanese, and they will have more info in September with a planned release in fall.
I suspect they got a lot of Japanese complaints and are finally deciding to release a translated version. I see no reason to not announce this earlier but at least they are doing it.
