Ben Carson on Texas School Choice, DEI Policies, 2024 Presidential Race

  • Former presidential candidate Ben Carson, who served as the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development in the Trump administration, joined The Texan’s senior editor McKenzie DiLullo to discuss his support of the Texas Legislature’s efforts to curb the ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion’ policies in higher education.
Carson expressed his views about the state of public education across the nation in general, and the fight over school choice in Texas specifically.
“Given the fact that Texans tend to be logical people, I suspect the chances of it passing are pretty strong, quite frankly,” said Carson. “It’s so important that we have competition because that’s the way we obliterate mediocrity in schools.”
Carson also weighed in about the 2024 presidential race and whether he will run again or has any plans to endorse a candidate.

Dr. Carson is an intellectual giant who should have been our president. I admire him very greatly for his ability to see the truth and to express it simply and wisely.

Amen, I agree. Dr. Carson’s best attribute is not his intellectual brilliance. Intellectual heft is not lacking in D.C. He has a rare integrity and an outstanding character borne out of his deep and genuine Christian faith. He is a dedicated and loyal friend/supporter of Trump. As he said at CPAC, he is working FT to get him re-elected this year.

My question is how will school choice affect our lower socioeconomic small town schools be affected? We are miles away from bigger cities, and therefore do not have the choices. As a retired teacher, I have always worried about the economical disadvantaged people that can not afford to drive these distances to schools because of work and money. Will it take funds away from public schools? I could ask a plethora of questions on public schools today! Also, I showed your movie every 21:14 year at school at school to show what hard work and dedication can do❤

The problem is, poverty neighborhoods have lousy school districts. Our wealthy school districts in fine neighborhoods have better teachers because parents won’t tolerate lousy ones. We all know the lousy ones end up in the poorer districts. The kids suffer. The system does not want to change and Dr. Carson is right - competition is necessary for public (government) schools. Dr. Carson KNOWS how poor children are not given that fair shot in the present system. Our Texas can do better.

So your worried people in the middle of nowhere won't have as many choices for schools? That's how it has always been....

There is a lot of truth in your statement. Public Education is broken because in part of societal issues (family dysfunction, impact of tech on students, poor policies and mandates which work against teachers and erode authority).
Education needs to be treated as a privilege and not a right. High standards in behavior should be expected and misbehavior will not be tolerated or you will be educated in another type of environment. We are way too tolerant of misbehavior and disrespect which spreads like wildfire when not addressed.
If we do not wish to address these issues then Charter Schools could offer a solution. They could be seen as the desired school to be in if you earn the right through sound academics, excellent behavior and hard work. I could see Public and Charter working together in that manner. Perhaps even offering skills and trades for those who are more hands on learners.
The biggest issue with public education is that as a society many families care less about education which has created apathy. Along with very poor policies implemented by state and federal government we have a system that is crumbling and we need to think outside of the box.@@MTknitter22

@@MTknitter22 Trump is useless when it comes to situation where people really need help. When the elites ordered lockdowns he like a perfect slave did nothing to stop. But why should it surprise us. He is a man with no moral. He tried to kick out an old lady from her house just to build a parking space. He divorced, runs a gambling business, has connected to habat lubovitz sect. He even paved the way for financing of mrna experiment and at some poin during his speaches advertised it. Trump is a Judash not a people's friend

This interview was a great exercise in how to serve softballs. Way to go! The soft-spoken Dr. Carson, think of him what you will, is no more than a wolf in sheep's clothing. His worldview is clouded by a myopic fog of reality denial, based on carefully chosen words that sound good on the surface but don't penetrate much beyond their veneer. Every issue he touched on demonstrated this. Life is a lot more complicated than that. 😮
