  • Scenes of old downtown Cincinnati during the holiday hustle & bustle of 1936. Finishes off with a trip to the Eden Park Conservatory -- another local tradition.

    As a teenager growing up in Covington, Ky, in the 70’s, the streets of Cincinnati was alive with people working, shopping, and having lunch at Fountain Square. Go there today and it’s no where like it was back then. The malls destroyed that and it’s sad for the city.

    Doug, Old Cincinnati Kid here, Bond Hill, Roselawn...fantastic footage. We forget what a bustling, urbane place Cincy was, a real player among the nation's cities. Most people don't know that at one time the nation's prognosticators postulated that Cincinnati would emerge as America's greatest city, over N.Y. and Chicago! Well, we were just too in love with the river and couldn't jump into rail as the the "Next Big Engine", so it never came to pass...but she's still a helluva town, isn't she? Thanks for the post!

      @@chickengenius4202 No argument there, but it didn't get the JUMP on Chi'town...And even though there was a period of heavy rail traffic, it died out. I feel this is because of one of our City's main flaws: It never knew what it wanted to BE. It hedged it's bets and said, "Well, ok rail...but let's not give up on the ol' river. It's served us pretty well in the past."
      Yes. So did the Steam engine.
      Cincinnati has always been plagued by bad mayors and City councils who keep the Queen City stagnant to this day!
      IF we would've had NO city council and a STRONG Mayor, we would now have light rail from the suburbs to Downtown...a whole new City. It breaks my heart. Still. when I drove a cab (Skyline Taxi) for years, people from New York in my cab, taking them back to their hotels from a night out on Mt. Adams, said, "Wow, I didn't realize Cincinnati had so much going on."
      That made me very proud...having lived in N.Y as well. But Cincinnati is where I was born...raised in Crosley Field...just a great city...that WOULD have had a Subway if not for the Depression and malfeasance.

      No, it was a typically busy shopping day during the season.

    Hi Doug is this your footage? Could I use this for a project I am working on ?

    • @gordonwd
      @gordonwd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably -- what is the nature of the project? I can send you the video in more of an uncompressed format, which would probably be better if you're doing your own video editing vs. using TH-cam's format.
