EDIT: SHOUTOUT to @fionasimagination for helping me remember how to adjust the overhead arm to go over your desk!! i couldn't remember how lol I am silly anyways, Thank you all so much for 50,000 subscribers! I hope this video encourages you to pursue a project you've been holding back from because you don't feel ready. Whether that be TH-cam, writing a comic, opening a shop or anything else, you got this!! make sure to like and subscribe so that we can continue to make art together 💖
Dude I've been watching Kelsey for YEARS!! I've wanted to do TH-cam for going on 10 years (chasing my 5th grade pipe dream) and I never felt like it would be truly possible until I found her videos. 2024 is the year I'll be putting what I learned from her into action and I'm so glad I follow someone who's basically living proof that it is still possible to grow on youtube as an Artist in the 2020's
YES it is doable!! I thought the same way but here I am a year later with 50,000+ subs, making almost a full time living off of sponsorships, ad revenue, and other streams of income. Kelsey told me she’s workin on an update TH-cam artist Workbook for next year so make sure to keep an eye out for that!!
I’ve been very hesitant about starting my channel, but this video has gotten me riled up to begin. Your tips are so helpful because I was one of those who just bought stuff and didn’t know what i wanted to do, but the fact that you have everything I already have, less than and still film amazing videos. You just changed my life thank you.
Totally agree with using what you have at your disposal first. Chances are the first few videos you make probably aren't going to be great whether you have expensive equipment or not. Anything learned usually requires some practice and getting a few videos out of the way before you can really start to see some improvement. Best to just upgrade as you grow as a content creator.
exactly!! I have been posting videos for about a year, and only now am I considering getting an actual camera and mic ! it's such a safer bet and saves you money if things don't work out
Dude, if you pull out the arm from the clamp and stick it into thr round whole on the top of the clip you can get an overhead view when clamping it to the desk too🙂↕️
I guess what I love about your videos is yes the art part but I really enjoy listening to your voice your like the present day Bob Ross. And your art is just a beautiful and expressive. It's just beautiful eye candy. The way you draw faces and use color is just so beautiful. I always get so excited when I see a new video of yours. I just love putting on your videos while I draw. Keep up your beautiful art Shay, your an amazing artist and I hope you never lose the passion for art. Hope you have a great rest of your day.❤
Thank you so much!! That is very high praise, I am very honored. I’m so happy you have been enjoying my videos this year, and I can’t wait to join you in more future draw with me sessions!💖
love the way you emphasize that we don't need to do a huge investment or have the fanciest and most expensive tools to start doing the things that we want, since i started watching your videos i keep repeating that to myself and i've been able to actually try new things and improve in my art. your videos truly deserve to be watched by millons because they add so much value to the art community
Thank you so so much!! And yes!! Do as much as you can with what you have! It’s surprising how much success and how much you can learn with the bare minimum 💖
such a good video ❤️ just started out myself because i consume a lot of art videos while drawing, and thought why not try to make some myself, maybe someone else would enjoy to watch that too. don’t get me started on the speaking part, i‘m doing it without for now. but after hearing you speak about this i could really relate to everything. my lack of verbal communication could really benefit of trying to speak in videos too 😅
I had to immediately test out the tip with the white surface and light, by using a giant white canvas I have laying around here, and it really works! Thanky so much~ I love your videos, they are always so chill and you put so much love into them. x333
I recently started making short videos for tiktok and I really wanted to go for youtube instead, but had so many questions and things to consider, I had no idea where to begin. This really helps!! Thank you, hopefully I get to start here soon as well :))
And.....subscribed! I only just found your channel through this video. I really enjoyed the pace and overall peaceful feel of your video. I'm glad to have found your channel, thank you for making it ☺️
I really just wanted to pop in and say that as a relatively recent subscriber (I think I’ve been around here for a month or two now!) I find all your videos really, really inspiring Shay!!💕 I love what you do and what you make, and your style of filming and conversational approach to your videos really does feel like I’m on call with a friend! It’s actually really helped make the otherwise very daunting idea of making videos for myself much more approachable, and that’s something I’m aiming to do this year thanks to people like you and Kelsey! Thank you so much for being a resource and inspiration to other artists, it’s really awesome!💕
I love this video. I wanted to focus on my youtube channel this year, but I was afraid and overwhelmed to start. So your video is really helpful and a good reminder to just start with small steps and don't worry too much❤
Hey Shay! quick question (which may seem a bit silly). How do you keep your art stylised while still semi realistic? For example, drawing real people like Hannibal or Will!
I think this comes from really understanding anatomy fundamentals, structure, and proportion and being able to warp those things to suit a certain style! I know this is kind of vague but I would say really focus on understand the structure of what your drawing and then "break the rules" to get the semi-realistic style.
This was an awesome video! It was cool to see what your process is for video creation and I'm so glad you brought up creating from the heart, because I think today it's so common to sink into that "content creator" mindset where views and likes take precedence over the passion of the work. I have a TikTok and sometimes I get caught up in it myself. This was a helpful reminder, and really cool! You're awesome 😎
You are such an inspiration to me as an artist! By watching you, I’ve had the motivation and knowledge to grow my Instagram! (I’m at 6K now!) You gave me a lot of courage to take my art seriously! Now I’m trying to start my TH-cam and this video is helping so much! 💚💚💚💚
Congrats on the 50k subs, Shay! This video was awesome as always and has really inspired me to finally make videos and post them on TH-cam 💙 (we’ll see if I actually end up doing it but I’m very inspired lol)
This is a super useful video! I came for a specific part (I wanted to know if I should record while painting/drawing or if I should voice over my recordings haha) But then I stayed for the entire thing and took a bunch of notes!
I know this is an older video but I finally decided to start a TH-cam channel and seeing your setup and helped me feel so much better because my “studio” is a desk in the corner of my old bedroom at my parents house lol
Thank you so much for making this video. It helped me so much to come out of a creative block and just start working in my channel, I can't thank you enough for that!
This was super helpful, thank you so much! It has nothing to do with the topic but I was very surprised to se that fairy doll on a horse on your desktop as I have the same one! My dad got it for me in a work trip and it's the first time I've seen another one it made me very happy :D I also have mine on my work station looking over me, it's very dear to me
Absolutely loved seeing your video. I’m an art TH-camr too and sometimes while filming I get lost into the art process which doesn’t really get me the best camera shots. How do you deal with trying to juggle making art authentically and filming well?
that's a great question! honestly it's still tough to balance, especially since this is an income source to me and I gotta get a video out every week to keep myself fed lol. Always put your art first and make it the most important step, but set timers and reminders to move your camera or keep a shot list in front of you while you work so that you don't forget. Developing a healthier art set up by standing up and stretching every 30 min can naturally break up your art sessions and encourage you to change camera places.
this is my problem now about a lighting for overhead camera cuz it look glare because of reflection of a graphite so I thanks so much sharing about the lighting tips and also what iphone you use cuz i used to study and experiment on iphone 6s that I only had
Hello Shay, I love your clips very much, and I love drawing like you. It has been my hobby since childhood, and I would very much like to create a TH-cam channel related to drawing like you, but I am afraid and I do not feel that it is a good idea because I am good at drawing, but not completely. I am not good at drawing like you, but what do you think of my idea? Should I do it? that
I agree with @diaryofaclementine ! the best time to start is now, and like they said, it will be really cool to look back and see how much you improve!
i started my channel this year too hoping to reach monetization goals within the year. but posting regularly has been a huge struggle as video editing takes me more than 2 weeks and i'm doing everything on my average phone with pretty limited storage (32gb). so channel hasn't got much traction yet which can be quite discouraging.
I have a ton of GB on my phone, but I regularly clean and delete footage after moving it onto my computer. Getting a phone to usb cable is super useful!
Love the video!!! Question...I edited my video...but I have an intro and outro (like the "theme song" for my channel with my name and then the outro part says thanks, subscribe, etc, and has the spaces for youtube to put the recommended videos) My question is...do I edit that into the meat of my youtube video, or is there somewhere for me to upload it and it'll add itself to my video?
How do you all feel about digital art videos? I noticed many digital artists show themselves drawing on the tablet instead of an actual screen recording. Do people feel more of a connection with seeing the artists draw?
I think so! It seems more real/cozier in my opinion. It's a little more cumbersome to film but I like how it looks! It's almost like you're drawing beside them, instead of just a screen recording. But it is sometimes much easier just to show a screen recording so I do both depending on my time hehe
I usually try to keep them 30 min or less! for storage and organization sake. if there is a really boring/uninteresting section of the piece I am working through, I usually don't end up filming it. and sometimes it is annoying to have a camera in the way. But yeah typically it's 10-30 min recordings of what I am painting or drawing.
EDIT: SHOUTOUT to @fionasimagination for helping me remember how to adjust the overhead arm to go over your desk!! i couldn't remember how lol I am silly anyways, Thank you all so much for 50,000 subscribers! The being embarrassed part was so true. For so long I was scared to post but I’m just like whatever now
same!! My realization that no one really cares that much was such a weight off my shoulders

I love your art work!! awesome. I'm so impressed by the webcam you're using!
Watering plants might make me develop a habit of using my desk more productively 😇
Ohhhh!!! I’m so excited to see this video! I asked for a setup tutorial on the first video I watched from you!❤❤❤
You’re just one video away from mastering plant illustration - don’t miss out!

So helpful thank you!
so nice ❤😍👍
How do you like to store your footage for videos and stuff? I have some speedpaints in the making but they are taking such a toll on my storage 😭😭
true. mobile storage keeps getting full all the time. i delete everything of past videos for the new videos. have a 32gb one rn.

is the webcam called obsbot recording your video with desk mode? looks very cool
I did not use it to film this video. I recorded with the webcam for my artober tour video!! but just in the standard mode on my tripod.
i see an indiana print on your wall- if you’re also in IN, shoutout!
Such great information! I think I missed it, do you not use iMovie to edit, if so which do you recommend to edit your videos - free preferably.
