    I tend to struggle with this question of "am I a real artist?" mainly because I work in abstracts and not specific models or portraits or still lives. I don't see as many people who do those things, and it makes me question if my art is valid, especially since a lot of people believe that abstract art is "lazy" or say "my three year old could make that". I have yet to make a finished piece because of it but I'm trying to stay positive about it

      I think abstract artwork is just as important and valid an art from as more traditional/representative works. To me, abstract work is sometimes even more impressive and thought provoking because the meaning is not explicitly stated through regular illustration. Keep on creating!! People will recognize your work and value it as another beautiful form of creating. the girls that get it, get it >:)

    Imposter syndrome is so real 😅 I was struggling with that recently with TH-cam creation. As someone who got back into art because of social media, I need to remind myself more often that it’s okay to make art that isn’t necessarily for posting, but for fun and/or learning. Really enjoy hearing these topics and hearing your perspective! 😁

      imposter syndrome really hits hard when your account is growing!! but its always good to remember, like you said to make art for yourself and continue to find joy and benefits from making art to make it sustainable and nurturing to our creative spirit. I am happy you enjoyed my words on this, thank you for watching!

    So interesting how many of us feel the same way! I've always been shy to even introduce myself as an artist, only saying I'm someone who likes to do art, just because I feel like I don't have the “requirements” to call myself one (which is stupid 'cause what would those even be?). My biggest struggle with the art community online is that you have to pick one thing to focus on to grow an audience, but I like so many different art styles and mediums. I don't want to limit myself to one thing. It drove me into a huge art block that lasted for months. I didn't do anything for a while, then one day I just picked up a canvas that had been collecting dust on my shelf and started painting with no thought. I felt that same desire to do art as when I first started, and I remembered the joy of it. Earning money through creative work is a struggle, we gotta remember to connect with our art and do what we love🫶🏻

    • @sketchesofshay
      @sketchesofshay  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I feel this so much!! About not wanting to limit myself to one thing… there are so many different projects I want to do!!💖 but like you did, sometimes we just need to get started and just create things for ourselves !

    Art for school left me with such horrible art block, and i was unable to make anything i was happy with for a month. After a while my motivation came back, but i lacked any ideas. In the end me and my friend found an oc-tober prompt list (in the middle of November) and are just doing the prompts in our own time with zero pressure and its been so fun and indulgent :) loved the video, awesome art as always and a really relatable topic! ❤

    I will start out by saying that I have not finished the video!! And probably I won't get around to it until later.
    But I wanted to say that I have also struggled with "impostor syndrome" as well as depression-fuelled art-block.
    I understand that this is not even a little bit the journey most people go on with regards to this sort of thing, but my big "breakthrough" that helped me feel better about the paintings I make was that I don't actually need to be an artist, and my work doesn't need to be art.
    I realized, long-explanation-short, that my ideal life doesn't involve me "making art full-time". I want to study plants and ecosystems.
    This realization has allowed me to actually start working towards selling prints of my work (i know... that's contradictory 😖), but just as a "stepping-stone" versus committing to it for eternity. Or, that's how making money off of my work felt to me for years.
    And I am incorporating my curiosity about the nature around me into my work these days. It's... going pretty well, I'd say.
    I don't say all this to tell you that being an "artist" is bunk or anything. Really, I feel that people should be able to determine for themselves Who They Are. But... I also feel that ultimately it's not the biggest deal out there. If you're an artist, then cool. If not... so what?
    Anyways, I do like the amount of video that I've seen. I also think these kinds of topics and conversations are quite important to be having, especially when it comes to social media. Have a good day! And I apologize if it's weird that I'm commenting so long after this video has been uploaded.

    Imposter syndrome is really rough at times. I'm currently in art school and my first year I suffered from imposter syndrome the whole year. Thankfully I do finally feel like I can be considered an artist. There will always be ups and downs but I believe we just need to get past our own eyes. In my art at least I kept on pushing and pushing my art to the point where I didn’t feel like it was mine. It wasn't until I was completely in an art block that I finally realized I am not enjoying what I am doing. Sorry I ended up going into a tangent.

    trying to make time for your art can be so difficult, specifically for me I've got school and exams and otherwise just life stuff, so actually getting to draw something for myself to enjoy is a blessing, I never participated in inktober or any kinda art challenge even though I've been drawing for over 4 years, and I dont think that make me any less of an artist either way. It's important to create what you enjoy and like you said in the video, your art will finds its audience overtime

    Definitely continue on your own path and your own art for as long as financially and mentally possible ❤
    Working in the industry is painful; emotionally and mentally. You're basically the product owner's hand. It might look and sound prestigious but it is still a ball and chain situation. Yes, there's financial stability from a corporate 9-to-5 artist job but if your finances are aye okay with what you're doing right now, I'd advise to stay away from the employer-employee model, aka an industry job. If you want to work with fellow creatives, you can always band together with some industry veterans on a collab group project if the parties involved are aligned on a creative vision 😊 But definitely don't look at industry art jobs as if it is the golden standard to strive for bc it is really brutal out here; morally speaking too.
    You are light-years more skilled, imaginative, and passionate in your craft than I am, and yet I've work in the industry since graduating 10 ish years ago, but actually really hate it bc of the reasons I shared above😢 I'm only in the rat race for the finance side of life, but as an artist, I am terrible; I'm good at my job role's realm, but I have no passion in what I do at work (burntout but gotta make the dough and hit those deadlines set by higher-ups), so I really envy the spark and freedom you have right now and you really inspired me to think about opening up a sketchbook again ❤

    • @sketchesofshay
      @sketchesofshay  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention and sharing your insight! I have slowly realized from watching a lot of industry veterans talk about working in those environments is that you should try to go solo as much as you can so that you can own your art and do the things that you are passionate about. I think I still just have this pressure (maybe from family, peers, or even myself) to pursue a more "traditional/official" art job, and feeling like it would truly make me a professional, but I know that's not the case and it's my own insecurity speaking lol If you don't mind me asking, what do you specifically do? and do you have any social media handles where I could DM you to ask more questions? I would love to hear more about your experience as a beginner in my career.

  • @lemonbugsy
    @lemonbugsy 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I actually really appreciated this video. I am honestly in a similar boat of feeling at a loss of where to go from here, especially as a junior in college, a year from graduating, and realizing I have not learned the skills I need. I want to go into illustration but the college I am at does not offer anything like it. I was accepted in a printmaking program which I adore, but that just isn't my dream so I have decided to transfer to an art school and it is the biggest and riskiest decision of my life. It is refreshing to hear that other artists have the same feeling of not having a fully or well-developed portfolio of sorts, just feeling they are lacking something. It isn't a fun feeling, but it is nice to not be alone in this. Know that you are doing a lot just by voicing this and all that you are feeling. Being an artist has been the most beautiful yet most exhausting part of my existence and I feel a lot of times we sort of just are in a constant state of pure motivation and utter imposter syndrome. What even defines a real artist? I don't think we will ever know because art truly is in the eye of the beholder. I tend to take the process of creating the art itself for granted, and although I am transferring colleges, my current one has taught me to not be too precious of my art and allow for mistakes. The process doesn't just lead to a complete artwork-- rather, it is a piece of artwork itself. Even if you do not have a fully developed portfolio, all the art you are making right can be considered a part of the process of creating said portfolio. As said in Toy Story 2, "You can't rush art."

At times it’s really hard to feel like my art is original, I struggle with coming up with my own characters and even stories for them.
