As a retired SP locomotive engineer, I still consider steam locomotives as REAL."railroading". Yes, I have run this beauty.
My father worked in engine service with SP from 1920 to 1965, and my career was from 1950 to 1996. My father wrote poetry, and I will share a bit of his poem, The Iron Horse.
From out of the distance comes a wail
As of as of a soul in deep travail
And a rushing monster with a fiery eye
Lets out a scream to the moonless sky.

years ago, a good friend survived a terrible car wreck. Long story short, after his physical recovery and financial recovery he drove over for a visit. He had his Ford painted like Daylight, had graphics made (this was in the 80's) a seriously loud air horn installed and he went about driving his dream, the Daylight. Very awesome to see this video and understand what he explained about the sounds the real thing made. George I hope you are doing well.

Awesome video! I rode in one of the double decker glass cars behind that locomotive some years back before I started on TH-cam. We rode it from Rock Island, Illinois across the Government bridge into Davenport and then on west somewhere. We turned on a wye and returned later that day. It was a huge rail fest with other steam locomotives but I can't remember the year. This brings back those memories

My mom and I rode the Shasta Daylight from Portland to San Francisco and return about 5 times back in the early '50s. As a young lad on the train, I had full access to all the cars, as long as I was under strict control. It was such a beautiful trip. My favorite memories of the trip was passing through Shasta Lake and Mt. Shasta area and into Dunsmuir. Also, the ferry boat from Oakland to San Francisco was fun. The trips on the Daylight are some of my most favorite memories as a child. I still visit the 4449 during the Christmas holidays on its short run on the east side of the Willamette River into Portland.

But THIS train is a Beauty to Behold, mesmerizing like a living, breathing powerful piece of American History. THIS train can block my road forever & I wouldn't complain, LOL! The men who manned that engine, at that time, had a great thrill on the trip they made. Got to see that Engine back in 1976 when it made a trip through St. Louis, Mo. down at the Gateway Arch. Done up in different colors at that time. Would have to pull my color slides out and take a look at them again. Enjoyed the video. Job well done! Oh and I love those Vista Dome coaches. I remember having travelled thousands of miles in trains in India pulled by steam engines in 50s and 60s. After traveling in a train pulled by steam engine and when you get down the person who comes to receive you could not recognise you because your face is fully covered with coal ash. We were a railway family. My father served Royal British Railways for 35 years.

In my younger days (a long time ago) I used to ride this train quite often. My grandfather was the General Secretary of the REA Union in San Francisco. That is how we were able to ride trains all the time, free! I sure hated seeing steam being replaced with gas turbine then diesel electric.

Outstanding video! I grew up along the tracks in Bingen and Dallesport and the trains were a big part of my childhood. My grandfather had big farms there. I wish you could've gotten a shot of the train crossing the bridge near Wishram when the train cuts over to go up the Deschutes River. Pretty rare to see a train crossing that bridge let alone a srreamliner. Another good video op would have been the train going through Maupin way down in the canyon. Thanks!

You are very welcome! But I have a question here: unlike most of the 1930s - 1940s vintage German Steam engines (e.g. series 01, 41, 44, 52, to name a few), engine 4449 seems running so clean as if it had passed the Californian low - emission regulations!! The German engines are as grimy as 80 years ago! I suppose 4449 is oil - fired, isn't it? Any answer would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, merry Christmas! and I forget: thanks for this high - quality video, one of the best in resolution & sound I've watched so far!
