  • Flies are damned annoying! But there are things we can offer our horses which a act as a natural fly repellent. For our horses' benefit we have these options available on our yard throughout the spring, summer and autumn months
In this video, I talk about the two natural fly repellents which we swear by. There are several on the market or out there which you could try, but these are good for the horses, simple to us with very little input from us and cheap.
In my Thursday Thinks on Natural Fly Repellents I talked about these two options which our horses consumer as and when they want, but I also talked about how other animals can be used to bring down the insect population on our land. Make sure you're subscribed and you've clicked the bell icon so that you get a notification as soon as those videos are posted. You will be able to find them in the 'Animals and Land Management' playlist.
Comment below and let us know which of these two option you will be using for the benefit of your horse. Remember to keep us updated on what you horse thinks of what you offer and whether you think it helps them, we love to hear about other people's experiences.

@@naturallywilor The garlic seems to work decently well....I can't get my horses to eat/lick the turmeric! 🤔

I'm so happy to hear that the garlic is working!♥ I wouldn't overly worry about the turmeric, sometimes it's not what they need at that time. I find that my herd often choose one or the other. There will be times when I can't keep the garlic water filled and other times when I can't put enough turmeric out for them. I never know which they need so I provide both and they switch and jump and change as they need/want. This is what I love about horses, they know what they need and when, it's just our job to keep them supplied. Keep me posted on how you do 😊 and let me know if you need help with anything.

@@naturallywilor Thanks for the clarification; that all makes sense! 👍
Interestingly, we put the goats in the horse pasture yesterday to get rid of the weeds (well, all the plants the horses don't eat), and the goats LOVED the turmeric! 😀👍

That's fabulous! 🥰😍🤩 I've always wondered about getting goats or sheep to get rid of the weeds, are they relatively easy to care for? I've heard they can be real escape artists!

Very well done. Well behaved gent's you have. How long does it take for the Garlic water to take effect & start repelling ?? Also I have only 1 large water trough for my 2 guys, is it ok to make that a Garlic water Poly tank ?? Thanks - Doug from Upstate N.Y.

Hello, I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
How long the garlic takes to start repelling depends on the horse's body, I find that my youngsters benefit faster and don't need as much as my older horses. But yours may be different. I generally find that my herd are enjoying the effect within an hour or two and sometimes hang around the garlic water for a while until it takes effect, then they go on their way.
I would always recommend a separate water source and to not just have garlic water available. Garlic is a great herb for repelling flies, but if more is taken then the body needs for that purpose then you could see it's other properties taking effect. Predominantly the fact that it is anti bacterial and could upset the good bacteria in your horse's digestive system. If you give your horses the option of clear water and garlic water separately they will balance it themselves.
I know I use a small water trough in the video but before I had it spare I used to have a large feed bucket on the yard with a quarter of a bulb of garlic soaked in it. With an old motorbike tyre around it the bucket didn't get tipped over and the herd benefitted from the garlic water. It was only as my herd increased that I found I needed something bigger to keep up with my herd's demands.
I hope this helps, any more questions just let me know. Also, keep me updated, I would love to know how your boys do 🙂

@@naturallywilor Than U so much for answering my ? & concern on 'single garlic tank' . I have buckets & other means & will offer them the garlic alternative. Should I say '' thanks mate'' - or ''well done'' as the accents always throw me. Have a great weekend & thanks again for responding. Doug

I've never tried putting garlic and water in a spray bottle. Personally I don't find that spraying things onto the coat does a good job long term. Between the elements, the horse rolling and generally itching itself the sprayed on product doesn't last more than an hour or two.
If you give it a go though, let me know. I'd love to know how you get on. If you find it works I'll give it a go too 😊

Thank you for the video!! Does garlic also repel mosquitos??

    • @naturallywilor
      @naturallywilor  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm not certain about mosquitos as I haven't really had to deal with them. I would have thought the principle would be the same but why not have a little research,😊 I'm sure the info is out there.
