- In HBO's The Gilded Age, season 1 episode 6, we are just starting to get to know the story of Carrie Astor, daughter of THE Mrs. Astor. So far in the show we haven't seen much of Carrie, who is 21 years old in The Gilded Age's 1882 timeframe.

Now, we can look into history and get a glimpse of what is ahead in Carrie Astor's storyline.
So are in the HBO series, The Gilded Age, we have not seen much of Carrie until episode 6.
In episode 6 of HBO's The Gilded Age, we get to see how Carrie Astor (played by Amy Forsyth) is just as much under her mother's thumb as Gladys.
Here we are starting to get more of a sense of Carrie and her life in shall we say, a gilded cage, when we come upon her crying at another of Mamie Fish's party in the scene where Larry and Gladys Russell approach Carrie as she wipes away tears from her face.
In conversation with Gladys, Carrie reveals that her tears are over a man but the man's name is not spoken.
It will take a couple of years before Carrie Astor would marry a man who would be from a new money family. A man her mother is entirely against because he is the son of a Southerner and Civil War profiteer whose reputation was as tainted as all the robber barons of that era.

Added history... Carrie's husband, M. Orme Wilson's, sister Mary, was married to Ogden Goelet - who is mentioned several times in the series - as visitors at Mamie Fish's house in Newport and later at a club. The Goelets were second only to the Astors at great land holders in New York. Ogden and May's daughter, also named May, married the Duke of Roxburgh. Another sister, Belle, married the brother of the Earl of Pembroke and the youngest. Grace, married Cornelius Vanderbilt, III.... The Wilsons were known at the Marrying Wilsons due to their very advantageous marriages.

I love hearing about Mrs. Astor and her daughter Carrie. Mrs. Astor's maiden name was Schermerhorn. My 2nd GGM was Anna Jerusha Schermerhorn (1850-1917). She married someone "beneath her station," and her parents Henry & Eliza Schermerhorn disowned her for life. So hearing how real these people behaved in their snobbery is fascinating to me. I'm so glad Carrie turned away from that and gave to charities instead. So, I too, am a descendant of the Dutch family Schermerhorn the same as Mrs. Astor and her daughter, Carrie. :)
So strange watching the poverty and struggle of the covered wagon pioneers in 1883 then watching the decadence of the Guilded Age during the same time period. A shock to the reality recognising system.
Right! I had to keep reminding myself that a few states away some people were living in extreme decadence 😄
Those in 1883 were chasing the dream like the ancestors of 1882 NYC elite had done just a couple of generations before. John Jacob Astor started out as a fur trader just as R.T. WIlson was from a poor family and started out as a tanner. No wonder people come to America for a better life! Thanks for joining the conversation!

I was introduced to "The Gilded Age" when I began my interest in the lovely gowns created by Charles Frederick Worth. They left quite a legacy and so many, many daughters were trapped. The social rules were like mental straightjackets. It seems strange to us now but everything these gilded age families did were splashed over the pages of newspapers.
Today we have the Kardashians and the like and the internet! Still a strange world! Thanks for joining the conversation!

Most people when they visit New York City stop at St. Patrick’s Cathedral not knowing that the worlds largest cathedral of Saint John the Divine at 125th St. and Amsterdam Avenue exists. It is quite a radical cathedral drawing in all types of artists. It’s an incomplete cathedral they have not finished the left wing. There is an iconic statue of arc angel Michael beheading the devil. There is the blessings of the animals the first Thursday in October celebrating the feast of Saint Francis of Assissi dogs and cats assemble in the cathedral it’s an unbelievable event and if you ever find yourself in New York City during that period of time you must go and see it. I wonder if Carrie Astor has something to do with that celebration!
Awesome! Love the extra information and who knows. it is likely that Carrie's love for animals did contribute to that event. I would love to see it and if my friend still lived in Brooklyn, I would visit her just to see that! Thanks for sharing!
By the way, they are still in the process of building the Cathedral, Like a real Medieval Cathedral, it's taken over a hundred years to build.

The photograph of German troops in Paris that you use in reference to World War I is historically inaccurate. During World War I the Germans never occupied Paris, hence a photograph of German troops passing the Arc de Triomph is from WWII.

I think so. Why would they change it? So far the history is spot on but it is mixed with fictional characters which is what I like. I haven't figured out who the Van Ryjans are yet. I think they're fictional. I do like how they glamorized Bertha because Alva Vanderbilt was NOT attractive and was portly.

The illustrations for the wedding are definitely not of the 1880s but from at least a decade later. It’s a minor detail, but the styles are remarkably different.

@@fabulouswomeninhistory I love the videos and all apologies for being overly picky. Please excuse that I’m a little OCD and thank you for the wonderful work you do. There used to be books (like some of the old paper doll books) that had lots of Victorian/Edwardian images that were all specifically in the public domain and I used to use them in my own illustrations-I’m not sure if they’re stiii currently in print but if I come across them I will let you know.

I was surprised that Carrie Astor had her funeral in a church that was not St John the Divine as she spent so much charitable works for it. Carrie is buried in the Bronx?

All the wealthy and powerful families built their great mausoleum at Wood-Lawn in the Bronx which was the countryside at that time so they are all buried there except the Vanderbilt who are on Staten Island because that is the birthplace of the Commodore, that's where they have their great Mausoleum. Fun fact whereas all the great mansions where turn down the mausoleum are still there and they are very impressive, people take tours of Wood-Lawn Cemetary just to see them, they're tours here on TH-cam to watch, it worth the time to watch one.
Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx is world renowned. Check its web site . Alva Vanderbilt is there in her mausoleum and many other famous people. They are even having a tour of the fabulous women buried there on March 24.

She was quite a character! She was a real person, and was known for her eccentric parties and sharp tongue. Her given name is Marion Fish.
I don't know the story but they believe that there is a character similar to Marian Brook since there are too many in real life or there are many situations and that fact catches my attention. I am from latinamerica

Last part of my research she was publicized in winter she entertained at her mansion at fifth avenue hosting teas most lavishly her father William back husband Marshall her children orme wilson jr Richard t Wilson in 1884 Carrie became noted society hostess on her own right despite her family at her marriage her father purchased them new home at 414 fifth avenue not far from her parents at 350 fifth as wedding present which was furnished Wilson father. For many years Carrie and her sister in law grace Vanderbilt . Shared box 3 at metropolitan opera house as hostesses on opening night thank you for for giving us chance to read learn improve our English language as well stay safe blessed good luck to you your dearest ones iam so sorry to be little long but reading and writing both are great ways to improve our English language as none native speakers

At 3:42 you said she starved herself until bulimia which is the incorrect term! Bulimia s when one overeats & then purges to throw it all up. Anorexia is the correct term as she was Not eating & starving herself to get her way so she could marry the man she loved
