Ron, while I personally don't keep shrink wrap on records, I've never had a single case of damage to the record sleeve from shrink wrap. And it's true: intact shrink wrap can increase the value on re-sale. Like you I've bought quite a few 50+ year-old sealed records as well, and never had an issue. Excessively tight shrink wrap can be an issue over time (warpage) if the sleeve is ultra thin or the record isn't stored correctly (upright and leaning slightly).
One of my favourite bands is Wishbone Ash. I particularly enjoy their 70's albums. However most of these releases have not been available on vinyl since that period aside from Argus and Pilgrimage. As such i used Tergikleen and this product has 'rescued' these vinyl albums which sound superb (for the time period).
Ron- I couldn't agree with you more on everything you spoke of. I've been collecting records since I was 6 yrs. old and was gifted some LPs by an older cousin. I'm in my 60s now. Yep-I prefer to buy my records in the shrink whenever possible for the exact same reasons- minty cover usually means a beautiful record inside. I have on occasion purchased 2 copies and married a minty cover with a minty record that was in a beat up cover. I have one of those expensive Degritter ultrasonic cleaners, and Tergikleen is the only thing I use. I then run a rinse cycle with a little bit of 99% ISO alcohol, and the records are spotlessly clean. If the US Library of Congress uses Tergikleen to clean and preserve their records then it's certainly good enough (and safe enough) for me. For outer sleeves I use the vinyl storage solutions double pocket/single tab, and their double tab gatefold covers- they are awesome.
Wow fantastic Love your cleaning process I've done the same thing you know the Frankenstein and some of those expensive records if you can find two records that match up you got a winner and you can usually sell the loser lol. Excellent idea what you do, I think I will go back to my MOV pressings and do that too! I agree and also leave the shrink on the albums if I can and ALWAYS put them in another outer sleeve. Yep, as I have told you before and I also show in my 4 part video series here on how to make your own ultrasonic RCM, I include a Tergitol surfactant in the chemistry I use in the ultrasonic cleaner. And ALL the albums, yes even brand new ones, come out sounding fantastic! And, like we both have mentioned, that it is a very good idea always to have a final distilled water rinse (When it is necessary to do a further more rigorous vacuum/rinse to an album, I always make sure to do an additional Laboratory Regrade purified water #2 rinse with a dash of ethyl alcohol in it) I agree with you that these ones using these super expensive COMMERCIAL ultrasonic RCM's without any chemistry whatsoever, are NOT getting the thorough cleaning that you and I are getting. I don't care HOW 'convenient' they may be, I DON'T think they are doing nearly as good of a job that I do with mine using chemistry, heat, slow rotation speed, and a proper rinse. (and I can do 6 at a time!😊) And, you are quite right, despite what the naysayers say about Tergikleen or other Tergitol products. Like you said, unless you are MELTING THE VINYL with what you are doing, you can use very aggressive agents [like Isopropyl alcohol, for example ( *GASP!* )] as long as you *GIVE THE VINYL A PROPER RINSE AFTERWARD!* Remember people, you are only going to do this *ONE TIME* to a record and never again, you're done. And, unlike LAST, which you have used and thankfully it has been okay for you, you DON'T leave it unrinsed on the record. So, don't worry about it 😁

Old records purchased sealed, you have a better chance of a mint record than today. I bought a sealedVan Halen reissue, from Walmart a few months ago that had two huge scratches. I think quality control was better back in the old days.
You are correct my friend. The new records of today they come with a lot of small scratches on them. I've seen that many times they're not audible but I believe it's the vinyl formulations not as robust as it was back in the say the '60s '70s. You having two huge scratches is not acceptable at all. That's just carelessness and uncaring about the customer too even package such a product.
Hello Ron! I just throw the shrink wrap away but I cut out the hype sticker and place it inside. I do use Tergikleen in my Kirmuss ultrasonic. Then I do 4 rinse cycles in the Humminguru. So far, I've had decent results with this method. I run the Kirmuss between 30 and 45 minutes depending on the condition of the vinyl record.
Very nice I have a question for you. So you use TERGIKLEEN for cleaning your records do you notice a significant Sonic improvement using TERGIKLEEN, versus not using . Say just using water? I've also done it where I've kept the pipe sticker and a fixed it to the outer sleeve but that's more of a rare thing for me. I just have a fixation or something about "in the shrink"other times when it is from let's say quality records and it just has the quality record sticker on the original plastic bag. I just fold it up and put it on the inside of the gate fold.
@@RocknRonni - Yes. I have noticed a sonic improvement on some new and used records. I've cleaned a handful that only had a slight or moderate audio improvement. Possibly due to muck wielded into the grooves that just won't come out or damaged by rot. I can attest that Tergikleen does work. I have the Thunder Seven album by Triumph that I bought used. It was very nasty sounding with clicks, pops and lots of surface noise. I gave it 2 full cleanings and it came out beautiful. Very few pops and clicks and the surface noise was gone! I was impressed. I thought for sure that this album was unrepairable.
If it's a rare record leave it sealed. You don't need to know if it's warped if you don't plan to play it. Same with shrink. Leave it on if it's a rare disc.
Hi Ron, I normally keep the shrink on and I haven’t noticed any problems with albums that I have owned from new. I have over the years bought maybe 3 or 4 albums that the original shrink has become attached to the album cover and would be extremely difficult/inadvisable to remove it. I also bought a collection of 1990’s Beatles pressings about 2 years ago that were all still sealed. All of them were badly warped and in 2 cases unplayable. I managed to get the records flattened so all good now. So why were they warped? I can’t be sure, but it’s almost certainly to do with the shrink being too tight, or maybe they were stored in less than ideal conditions. In some ways it’s better to buy an unsealed record because you know exactly what you’re getting. Take care cheers
Yes there's definitely pros and cons to buying a sealed record. like I discussed in the video the record cannot be guaranteed to be free of defects because it's not inspected and you can't tell if it's warped by the outside, and it can be a problem with some records. I was thinking during your commentary that those UK pressings they have the laminated covers this might be a problem for the shrink sticking to the laminate.

Hello thanks for asking a good question The outer sleeves I just purchased 100 more yesterday from Amazon they're called z o l e f I've already recommended their inner sleeves they are very high quality better thicker backing paper than the mofi or the QRP those tend to always crease up on the corners so I thought I would try their outer sleeves yesterday on Rachel's show they were all talking about how good the Zolef outer sleeves were and I had just purchased them a few hours earlier very curious. And the best part is they're very good value cheaper than mofi and QRP
Yeah, keeping the shrink is probably adding value on the secondary market. But I personally do not care on that. Apart of this expected value thing, the shrink is just bad for me. It makes the record (artwork) ugly and, more importantly, prevents from opening gatefolds. This latter is absolutely essential in my opinion. My routine : I use single or double-sized (for gatefolds), high quality polypropylene outer sleeves. In 95% of the cases, I can safely peel-off the hype sticker from the original shrink and I replace it on the new outer-sleeve, but never on the front, always on the back or inside the gatefold, when possible (when it would not hide any written part or essential artwork part of the back side of the record). Otherwise, I would keep the sticker(s) on the original shrink, I fold it and place it inside the jacket. Doing so will result in gorgeous looking front artworks, not obstructed by any hype stickers, fully protected and openable gatefolds. Using those clever, dual pocket outer sleeves made by VSS is adding some extra convenience when handling the records. The only downside is that this takes time and good quality outer-sleeves are, especially those double-sized for gatefolds, an extra to pay for.
I congratulate you for your expertise and your commitment to quality. when storing my records. It doesn't bother me that I can't see the record maybe as clearly with the original shrink on. It's just I've been collecting records for so long. That when it's in the shrink! it just makes me feel better. It's a lot less work getting the hype stickers off and getting those higher quality double outer sleeves. I also do at times remove the shrink wrap and if it's got hype stickers and such I will place that inside the cover like you do. You have a higher standard than I do. If you play the record a lot shrink wrap starts ripping apart and sliding up the cover I am not worried about whether the value goes down if there’s no shrink Too many people are worried about the value of the record Play it man!!
I agree with everything you've said and for a lot of records I have the same exact opinion you do. but there's the other side of it that I was trying to accentuate I guess. I'm sorry Dave I always forget not everybody is familiar with these records as I am. It says 100% analog masters. When I played the record I could hear digital so it went back to the website and they're saying the record was digitally mixed. you can definitely hear the digital in the record. I bought the record based on Michael 45's recommendation how it sounded so beautiful and so wonderful, cough. if you haven't seen the video it's not that old you might want to go back and have a look at it. I went back and watched a video Dave and yes you had commentary on the video so you watched it I guess😊 After I complained about the record to analog productions Chad cassum I guess watch the video and he left comments on the video as well.
I didn´t have much luck with sealed records, mostly the records were sort of damaged or not even close to flat. Last was Michaels Jackson History, yes that one, expensive and one record was really not flat, that was really bad. Gladly I bought an outer-ring to push the record down to flat state, it was OK then. These outer-rings are really expensive but you are not scared of none-flat vinyl anymore
@@RocknRonni When we are talking older records from the 80s or older I had zero luck with sealed versions. If a known GREAT dealer has a NM I buy it from him now just to leave that risk out because most of the time I didn´t get my money back, it is a 50:50 risk. Newer records mostly are fine and all flat, sadly not silent many times. I did buy ~700 records this year and went to quite something until I found some really trustworthy dealers where NM is NM or even Mint
@@77MovieFan okay yeah I understand I did too by an older record one time where it was warped on the sealed record others have been fine but it's not a common practice for me. most of the time I'm buying records with the shrink on but not sealed this is a lot different you don't get warped records this way. you get the same minty cover and the records aren't warped. but the majority of records I have purchased on eBay did not have shrink or stated to be near mint from reputable dealers with good feedback and I didn't have any issues with the records. but it's a learning process I did get a few I thought I was getting a deal and all I got was junk. But at the same time I did get a lot of great deals on a lot of minty records. I basically replaced all the older records at this point now I'm just buying new stuff that might be a reissue that might be a new release. Zolef I love their inner sleeves. they have the thicker paperbacker they don't fold over like the mofi or the QRP as easily. I just ordered 100 of their outer sleeves today first time buying them I was so impressed with their inner sleeves. they were talking about it on Rachel's stream today how the outer sleeves are fantastic. that was after I had purchased them, so that was pretty cool. On the TERGIKLEEN it says to add 10 to 20 drops to a gallon of distilled water I put 15 drops to 1 gallon of distilled water That's it nothing else. I've cleaned 600 records so far and I'm used about 1/8 of the TERGIKLEEN. Also after 10 records I change the cleaning solution and the rinse water in both spin cleans. The cleaning solution is so cheap it's not worth using dirty water to clean my records.

I'm using about 15 drops to a gallon of distilled water maybe 18 drops sometimes and I have cleaned 600 Records and I've only just used about an eighth of the bottle so it's very economical. And I change my water every 10 records or so no need to be conservative when the cleaning fluid is that cheap.

Everyone of My records are shrink wrapped with their appropriate hype stickers. No problem at all.

If you play the record a lot shrink wrap starts ripping apart and sliding up the cover I am not worried about whether the value goes down if there’s no shrink Too many people are worried about the value of the record Play it man!!
I agree with everything you've said and for a lot of records I have the same exact opinion you do.
but there's the other side of it that I was trying to accentuate I guess. Because the other side is like this stuff is horrible I always rip it off it's nasty you can't keep it on the record it's going to destroy everything I'm like whoa whoa whoa I'm just saying let's be a little bit more realistic about this. I'm sorry Dave I always forget not everybody is familiar with these records as I am.
It says 100% analog masters. When I played the record I could hear digital so it went back to the website and they're saying the record was digitally mixed.
you can definitely hear the digital in the record. I bought the record based on Michael 45's recommendation how it sounded so beautiful and so wonderful, cough.
if you haven't seen the video it's not that old you might want to go back and have a look at it. I went back and watched a video Dave and yes you had commentary on the video so you watched it I guess😊
After I complained about the record to analog productions Chad cassum I guess watch the video and he left comments on the video as well.
I didn´t have much luck with sealed records, mostly the records were sort of damaged or not even close to flat.
Last was Michaels Jackson History, yes that one, expensive and one record was really not flat, that was really bad. Gladly I bought an outer-ring to push the record
down to flat state, it was OK then. These outer-rings are really expensive but you are not scared of none-flat vinyl anymore
So what would you say your percentages are when you buy sealed records are they normally warped or just sometimes
@@RocknRonni When we are talking older records from the 80s or older I had zero luck with sealed versions. If a known GREAT dealer has a NM I buy it from him now just to leave that risk out because most of the time I didn´t get my money back, it is a 50:50 risk. Newer records mostly are fine and all flat, sadly not silent many times.
I did buy ~700 records this year and went to quite something until I found some really trustworthy dealers where NM is NM or even Mint
@@77MovieFan okay yeah I understand I did too by an older record one time where it was warped on the sealed record others have been fine but it's not a common practice for me.
most of the time I'm buying records with the shrink on but not sealed this is a lot different you don't get warped records this way.
you get the same minty cover and the records aren't warped. but the majority of records I have purchased on eBay did not have shrink or stated to be near mint from reputable dealers with good feedback and I didn't have any issues with the records.
but it's a learning process I did get a few I thought I was getting a deal and all I got was junk. But at the same time I did get a lot of great deals on a lot of minty records. I basically replaced all the older records at this point now I'm just buying new stuff that might be a reissue that might be a new release. HI Ron, If they are sealed, unopened how do you know if they have a factory defect, scratch or something, never mind warped.

they have the thicker paperbacker they don't fold over like the mofi or the QRP as easily.
I just ordered 100 of their outer sleeves today first time buying them I was so impressed with their inner sleeves. they were talking about it on Rachel's stream today how the outer sleeves are fantastic.
that was after I had purchased them, so that was pretty cool.
You can get them on Amazon and they're not expensive like other products are.

What is your recipe?? How much turgikleen? Do you mix it with anything??
On the TERGIKLEEN it says to add 10 to 20 drops to a gallon of distilled water I put 15 drops to 1 gallon of distilled water That's it nothing else.
I've cleaned 600 records so far and I'm used about 1/8 of the TERGIKLEEN.
Also after 10 records I change the cleaning solution and the rinse water in both spin cleans. The cleaning solution is so cheap it's not worth using dirty water to clean my records.

I scored an A1/A1 OG 1965 mono Dylan ‘Bringing it all back home’ in shrink with hype sticker..amazing that it survived 58 years in that condition!

How many drops of Tergikleen do you use in water
I'm using about 15 drops to a gallon of distilled water maybe 18 drops sometimes and I have cleaned 600 Records and I've only just used about an eighth of the bottle so it's very economical. And I change my water every 10 records or so no need to be conservative when the cleaning fluid is that cheap.

People who say that shrink wrap hurts records simply don’t know what they’re talking about. 60 years of evidence has proven them wrong. End of story. They must be brand new to record collecting. Perhaps they even call records vinyls.
