  • Singapore is heating up twice as fast as the rest of the world - with maximum daily temperatures predicted to reach 35-37 degrees Celsius by year 2100. As the world gears up to slash global emissions after the alarming report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in October 2018, we explore how, beyond climate change, the urban heat island effect spells trouble for future Singapore.

See there’s a huge paradox here: build high rises, which take up less space and are generally better for land use, less invasive for green areas. Urban sprawl destroys wild areas and is terrible land use. But then high rises can destroy underground aquifers and generate a lot of heat and overpopulation. Real head scratcher right there.

I live in a city with a massive urban sprawl problem and believe me, unmanaged urban sprawl does not always equal to quality or life. It’s not really one or the other, there’s gotta be a balance between the two models.

Revisiting this in 2023 where temperatures reached record levels in Singapore and realised that within the past 4 years nothing substantial was put into place to tackle this. We are just building and building without any recourse. Or the strategies in place have yet to prove effective in any way.
Personally, I think proper urban planning is very important. Where I stay, we used to have strong breeze coming into our unit or estate but since the opposite land had been built up, there's barely any breeze.

Deforestation to make way for giant enterprise to feed the ever growing population? That's another one. And that's just two among the myriads of problem human is facing today. Oh, I forgot, majority of the greedy filthy rich people doesn't even care. So I guess we'll just have to wait until mum earth will one day decide to ditch us all at once. The biggest culprits for the climate change dont come from homes, but from commercial buildings, hotels and shopping malls, If you ever work in those places you will know why. Dont even know how many billions of electricity they wasted on unneeded lights and super cold air con areas that you can keep a polar bear happy in.
Anyway, the lesson learned from this video is that if you live at the hight level, dont install a air con, as your electricity bills will be higher then the rest.
I wonder when your ah gongs can start thinking right and allow solar panels to be installed individual houses to cut down on power station electricity use.

lxy315lxy hot air rises! So I suppose that the higher vents would take in the hot air from below.
Also higher floors may receive more wind only if they’re unblocked (but such cases are getting rarer with the increase in the number of taller hdbs being built). Otherwise, the only wind you get is hot wind since the heat gets trapped by the buildings

I have lived in the middle of the Thar desert in Rajasthan,India for over two years. Summer tempertaures used to reach 48 to 50 degrees in the open. To survive in such extreme temperatures you must follow the native folk, wear large turbans, buildings are made of local sandstone and they conserve every bit of water. Singapore gets pampered by its prosperity. I recall a much laid back Singapore with its attap roofed houses, cool kampongs, before high rise buildings came with heavily paved roads and pollution from overuse of fossil fuel. Singapore cannot go back to that village life. But it can stop reckless urban development now itself. Global warming is a reality for Singapore. The heated up sea is rising and will reclaim its shores soon.

In Germany where I am born, houses are insulated to not waste heat energy. They have double pane thermo-insulating windows, and thick insulation materials inside the walls.
In Singapore we need to keep the heat out, but it is the same. We need to keep the heat out to safe energy and pollution. But the windows are made with thin glass single pane, even for expensive condos, the walls thin. That is where it all starts.
Then the greens. You may say Singapore is so green. Yes, it i. But about 15 - 10 years ago I saw massive pruning everywhere. At least in my area that has contributed a lot to heat up the concrete of houses and roads. The climate has become remarkable hotter, in particular at night.
While in daytime the temperatures may be similar, yet the nights in Malaysia just 100 km to the north are remarkably cooler, nicer. Or at least they feel cooler.

It's so puzzling that in Hong Kong and Singapore people are infinitely obsessed with air conditioning. Due to the amount of humidity and the amount of heat, it is actually feasible and quite effective to use a fan instead. By evaporating the humidity which condenses on someone's body, that actually produces a cooling effect which is already sufficient for someone's needs in a small room

I would argue that humidity is why aircon is much more effective, air conditioners can reduce the humidity in the room alongside the temperature. If you’re using a fan in high humidity and heat, the fan just blows hot and humid air at you which doesn’t do much to evaporate your sweat

Cleeon Virlief You are, we had temperatures of 38 degrees last year.
It is also a lot tougher for us as we do not have air conditioning in our homes and our houses are designed to keep heat in.

i always sleep on the marble floor of my room and it feels hot from the heat below my unit. My body will feel sticky and sometimes it makes me have leg cramps. I can't sleep on my bed because of the heat. i end up sleeping over a shirt which is much better. I also took calcium magnesium zinc to help ease my leg cramps and actually make me fall asleep pretty fast.

Then they would have to deal with increasing population. But if they neglect the population growth than they would have to deal with global warming because of high rise buildings. So its a lose-lose situation right here.

Bro, HDB or Hi-Rise builidng are the ones that save more SPACE for a small country like singapore ! It is the LANDED housing that are wasting so much space ! Just a few hundreds landed housing area are already more than enough to equal to a few THOUSAND HDB homes.

Global warming's answer is pretty much that.
But the best we can do is learn to live purely off of fans and electrically-run transportation only.
