Needed this video. As a broke college student, I refurbish a lot of models from eBay (which is a side hobby itself). The people stuff prime their models with might as well be concrete lol! Thanks man
Glad we could help!
what should we prime with then?
Those are not rubber gloves! You are wearing Nytril gloves and most petroleum based solutions will break them down! Get some Rubbermaid kitchen gloves and you will not have that problem!!!
Had a thought on doing this today, my first model was a Leman Russ Battle Tank and I use it quite a lot in 40k games, the problem is that its paint scheme is a bit dull and I moved onto adding camouflage to my other models (in which this model does not have a camouflage of its own, making it look out of ordinary to the other tank models)
literally saved a figure i messed up soooo bad with an issue priming. best video i coulda found thank you

Unboxing Hobby Tutorials pdf Instructions. First Look Airbrushing Battle Reports. Rob Baer Kenny Boucher warhammer 40k
Great tutorial. I do have to say though that I used this exact chemical and technique but it did not have the same effect. Granted my models have had paint on them for about 20 years, however they’re not particularly thickly coated. I’m finding that a lot of scrubbing and chemicals are still not getting all the paint off. There are still stubborn areas that don’t seem to strip no matter what.
Any advice?
> "this is so easy that I don´t have 10 minutes of footage"
> makes the video 10 minutes long anyway
Gotta feed the algrthym
Yeah, failure to do so could mean the difference between $10 and $1000.
Thanks for the recommendation! Just received my first bottle.
Great video! Im stripping off paint from a plastic action figure and will definitely follow your instructions! thank you!
Never thought I would need this. But i just found an entire blackstone fortress collection with all the minis. It was the 1st time he was painting minis, so that escalation box needs repaint :D
Fantastic!
Metals - Acetone (nail polish remover)
Plastics - Isopropyl Alcohol or Methylated Spirits (super cheap purple stuff)
Resins... um...
All the above are FAR FAR cheaper than this overkill.
Should mention that aceton might kill your plastic minis and bases.
@John Cimino $3 plus infinity time lol. Im a do-it-now kinda hobbist.
@@spikeybitstv no brainer for metal stuff, use gasoline. The plastic minis are the ones people struggle with. Speed is what people are after, and ease of paint removal. Super Clean, or bio strip.
@@richardlacroix9069, Im not sure why everyone wants to use terrible things instead of a $15 bottle that you can literally reuse. Like it's $15 I get it, it's expensive. works in a minute, for me time is money at this point to hobby on the things I want- that's all.
agree. $15 is money well spent to me.
Thank you and your dad
Does nail polish work?
Is there an equivalent we can get if we live in the UK?
Does it remove primer?
Thanks for the product recommendation. From time to time, I have thought about doing the eBay dig for some cheaper minis due to bad paints, but couldn’t find a good source of cleaning. This looked like it did the trick and then some!
What's the name of the product you are using on the metal container?
Does this work well with plastic mini or only metal minis?
Will this work on resin models?
Will this damage Warhammer plastics? I have a lot of Nighthaunt that I accidentally primed with non-acrylic primer and rubbing alcohol isn’t working too well.
Nah itlll be fine
My forgeworld knights are getting a bath and a fresh coat of paint. Hopefully I don't screw it up like last time. Thanks Man
works on plastics too?
Does this work on plastic miniatures with out destroying them?.
Yes but I never tried soaking them, so I cant speak to that.
It does work, but dont leave them out or the chemical will form a thick grimy coat. Of course the giat goes away once you place fresh chemical on it.
@@edgardeloera2874 sorry I'm new to all this what do mean by leave them out? like don't leave them in the chemical? or don't let the chemical dry on them?
@@dakotabebo6927 both. Don't let the mini sit in the chemical for to long and don't let the chemical sit on the mini for to long. Just get rid of the paint and wash of the mini as fast as you can.
@@secretagent7576 thanks
For normal plastics and metal isopropyl alcohol bath for 30 minutes and a toothbrush for the win, not tried it with resin yet though. Do not get the liquid in your eyes of mouth and wear gloves.
I use acetone for metal models. Let them sink in and after a bit they'll almost emerge clean. Alcohol 96% works well for plastic, but needs some vigorous brushing.
Not even 30 minutes it's like 5
Or 5 minutes in an ultrasonic bath. It's just magic tool fore cleaning.
Resin should be fine with ISO. That’s how most of them are washed after printing.
hi there! after we strip the model with this, do we rinse it in water or how do we know when it is ok to re apply a new coat of primer? / paint
Once its dry, it should be good to go!
is this ok to use on something 3d printed?
I theory yes if its resin, but try it on a small spot to be sure. I have not tried it.
Does it work on varnished miniatures?
It does!
Does this Work with plastic minis well?
Yep works with plastic, resin, and pewter minis! Try a small part of any miniature first to make sure its "safe" if you're worried for sure, but I've had no issues.
@@spikeybitstv Thanks! Been using 90% ISO but will gladly get something thats quicker.
@@gahngis8158 Yeah you are 100% paying for time here, but its good stuff. A can will last you like 10 years lol (ask me how i know)
Is this a resin figure? I am looking for something to strip paint from resin. Thank you!
I'd love to see Super Clean a try with the plastic minis, I've heard good things but gloves are an absolute necessity
This works amazingly well. Probably the best stripper available
Ultra sonic cleaners always seemed to be totally unnecessary for minis. This looks like an awesome product, thanks great subject.
I got some of this after watching this video to fix some Ebay scores. I had a Necron Night Scythe that felt like it was painted in a wood shop and got a ton of sawdust in the paint as it was drying, and a Necron Monolith that was primed solid black, but it was probably with some sort of automotive primer, because Simple Green couldn't touch it. The ELO got all of the paint off from the Night Scythe, no problem. The Monolith has been a bit more difficult. I finally got it down to plastic, but the paint as sort of melted and bonded to the plastic permanently. Have you ever had this experience? Is it safe to prime over?
Some primers bond with plastic. I would maybe sand it with super fine grit sandpaper so that a new primer could be applied perhaps.
@@spikeybitstv not a bad idea. It is awful stuff to try and clean up, it becomes a super sticky mess instantly. At least I will have a awesome looking Monolith when I am done.
If you immersed it fully and just shook the shit out of it... would it damage in mini?
“Models where expensive back then”
Recent 1/35 model tank releases
Pz.Kpfw.VIII Maus with Full Interior

Kingtiger s.Pz.Abt.506 Ardennes 1944 (Late)
List price: $96.95
US M4A1 DV
List price: $78.49
Soviet Matilda Mk III/IV Red Army Infantry Tank
List price: $65.00
I sure am glad kits are far more affordable now
That stuff seems ok, I like using denatured alcohol.
Does this thing works with plastic?
yep
How well does rubbing alcohol work?
Will this damage or effect resin models
I'd like to know this as well. Anything Spikey Bits?
Hey nice video. I'm very new and sorry for a stupid question but does it remove primer as well?
There's no stupid questions! But to answer your question, yes it will!
Thank you mate. Content creators like you are like shining lights in dark forest for us :D
Never thought I'd be stripping for minis 😋
Does it work on enamels or just acrylics?
works on enamels, acrylics, and decals :)
Does it work o plastic minis?
yes
Do you have a link for that stuff ,having trouble finding
Looks like it is still on amazon here snip.ly/6lohbi
Does ethane alcohol work?
What kind of paint was this, though? Acrylic, or enamel? I have a Grenadier metal (lead/pewter) mini from back in the day that someone painted something on that neither Simple Green nor mineral spirits will strip off - and it sat in mineral spirits for a year (!!!).
Been dickin' around with strippers and stripping methods.
TLDR: either use ELO as the initial step or final step in stripping to completely clean plastic OR if you're willing to put a couple of hours into a single model that needs to be cleaned THAT day. LATA will get the job done just as well with a bit of a soak. Speed: ELO>LATA Sonic>LATA Soak. Who needs a model stripped right the f--- now though?
This ELO stuff is the fastest. However, it is work intensive and NOWHERE near as quick & thorough as the video makes it out to be. It's great for open and low quantity of models for the stripping process (1-10?) . Open models being something like an assault intercessor, where an intercessor with bolt rifle in both hands going across his chest is what I consider closed. There is practically zero passive stripping, so the harder it is to get a brush somewhere the more time consuming it is. I have always needed a soak in another solution and/or sonic cleansing to clean it completely.
Also, the reusability of the liquid is questionable. What I've used turned the light blue/grey/black of the paint I was stripping. So far it has remained just as effective but not something I want to return to the bottle.
LA Totally Awesome (LATA) in a sonic cleaner is just as effective, more passive, cheaper, works in "bulk", but will need a day or two to get best results. It will take some brushing to get the last bits off, but can be workable without that step.
LATA and nothing but scrubbing will do the job. It can take up to a week to be as clean as it can get without scrubbing. This degree of soaking will also weaken glue, so repairs will be necessary. However, 24-72 hrs *can* get it done depending on detail and paint type.
does this work with resin 3d printed miniatures ?
I just use the same way with Tamiya's X-20A thinner on my Tamiya kits. Then a soap bath afterwards.
How was this stuff on plastics?
Model kits were expensive back then.... lolz
Testors ELO easy lift off paint and decal remover
Break fluid will do the job too
If the base is expendable use Dot 3 brake fluid. Works like a charm costs 5$ a liter.
does it remove the primer? Did you ad water to the bucket thing?
yep. no water needed, but I would wash you mini with soap when you are done to clean it off fully.
Can you put the solution and a mini in a ziplock bag or will it cause the bag to leak
Maybe, I am not sure. I keep it stored in a ziploc cause of spillage and it never ate through it no. But not sure if it would hold the liquid in large amounts sorry :)
Great video.
Do you have a recommendation for glue dissolving for plastic minis? I am trying to change bits around and don’t want to damage the bits im no longer interested in using
I don't have the answer but I do have a suggestion. I don't know what models you work with but I magnetize the arms on my space marines so I can switch them out at will. Check it out its actually not too difficult.
How do you make sure that all of it is gone from the model when you want to repaint it? Just water?
Yep. Just rinse it clean!
MAGIC IS HERESY!
But i'll let it slide this time.
Will it take off any top/clear coat? Such as Testors Dullcote?
You know I’ve never specifically tried that but if it cuts though enamels I would imagine it would?
Does this work with citadel spray paint on plastic miniatures?
I'll try it for you. I'm getting a bottle soon
Would this work for the pre painted D&D miniatures? The pre painting seems to covers a lot of detail.
Not sure honestly :(
Is it for sale anywhere else? Amazon doesn't sell it anymore
What kind of effect does this have on spray paint or spray primer anyone have experience?
strips it to. Main reason I used it lately honestly.
@@spikeybitstv thank you.
You demonstrate this on a metal mini, but does it work on plastic minis?
works on plastic and resin too
What if I wanted to repaint just one specific part of a model? For example, if I want to re do the weapons on my Stormcast Eternals, but was satisfied with the rest of my paint job?
Best way I found of stripping weapons (that stick off the model) is suspend them above a tub of your stripping liquid in such a way only the weapon is under the surface, Try to leave a gap though or it will seep into the hand due to the wicking effect and start lifting the paint you want to keep, the last little bit can be scraped back with a scalpel after the bulk has been washed off, a helping hand is great for this
So..... model kits are cheap now?
Does any old stain remover work?
I think this is the best i have use to far
Amazing
Looks great! how can I get this product in Germany? Looks like it does not ship to Germany :/
What kind of Minis do you get with the high level patreon
how well does that work with a varnished miniature?
Greetings,
I'm thinking about purchasing Elo . Some of my action figures, transformers . Would it work and be safe on them?
Probably not
Hi Rob, is that paint stripper liquid oily/oil based?
First place I’ve ever heard of an 8 Oz gallon.
Thank god I found this I need to strip my nids
What about plastic miniatures?
Works on them too
Is it safe for resin?
@@spikeybitstv thanks👍
It works but does it work to good if plastic is left too long?
I would not leave your minis in there very long. Be careful submerging them
Just a heads up, the affiliate link isn't working :(
looks like its not stocked on Amazon right now :(
I'm having issues with removing the primer...paint come off fine. Would this help?
It gets off even enamel paint so I would think it would do just fine with primers too.
Imagine that, a product made to strip paint off models is pretty good at stripping paint of models :p
No need to play Jr. Chemist with your cleaning supplies.
I use metholated spirit but it melts resin.
Very good tip, but you cannot buy this product in the UK I searched Amazon UK don't sell it.
Sorry to hear that
Why do you not soak them? Is that bad?
James Bigglesworth it might damage the minis over time.
@@brie.cheese_x Ah, I see, thx
Yeah it's just not necessary, the paint comes off so fast I never had to soak them.
@@spikeybitstv Cool, thx
Spikey Bits THanks. Btw, can you confirm by a test or something that this works on plastic? I feel like it may not, since you didn’t use it on plastic in the vid and it was so efficient on metal that I’m a little worried.
£54 in the UK, I'll stick with Detol or Iso for now but would love to buy this if it was £20, speak to your friends at Testers Robair ;]
Use metholated spirit mate, I use to use dettol but the smell just killed me.
Anyone knows if there is a european version of this product, i cant find it in amazon.es (spain) ty
Same issue with UK
Yeah I just looked and it's £54 but just use isopropyl alcohol %99.9 concentration it's about £7 for 1LT
Dang you would think Testors would sell this stuff everywhere?
Just looked up the MSDS sheet on testors website - I suspect it's the Isobutanol (Isobutyl alcohol) that means they can't ship to UK. I could be wrong, but i think it might be one of those things that the general public can't buy in the concentrations found in ELO.
Almost like a rib would fall off the bone 😂😂
water-based turps is as good and cheap
I wish this was a minute long video
I have no where to buy this in my country, here is what i did with mine.

I used Nail remover acetone free. This acid is little weaker then this one in video.. It is used to remove acrylic paint from nails without destroying plastic nails. But i did it with caution anyway.
Soak him first for 15sec in tequila glass. And then start dooing thing with a tooth brush. Effect is a lot weaker then this procces on video.
Also soak the brush in acetone, and after, soak mianture couple more times for about 3-4sec.
Didnt loose any details, removed 99% color.
Soak the model in Super Clean over night. No muss no fuss and it's safe, no gloves needed.
what is super clean?
This sounds like potential tech heresy
100%
@@spikeybitstv Thx for including the link to buy it btw? I'm gonna order some and repaint my Tau, I went for grey and blue which I really regret because they look pretty dull.
@@danielinskip8427 Try some bright colors like reds or maybe orange/green/violet :)
@@spikeybitstv I'm going for orange and blue, Tau are the weeb faction so I'm painting them the colour of every shonen anime protagonist
its like winsor newtons brush cleaner
No way this guy is older then thirty when this video was shot
